A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

Adaptív vetületválasztó algoritmusokat szolgáltatunk, melyek a rekonstrukció közben tudják megállapítani a következő hasznos vetítési irányt. Egyes konkrét gyakorlati alkalmazásokra a kidolgozott módszerek paramétereinek hangolását is elvégezzük.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?

Geometriai feltételek olyan gyengítését javasoljuk, melyek a diszkrét képrekonstrukció flexibilis modelljébe is beépíthetők. Újfajta regularizációs termeket vezetünk be, hogy meggyorsítsuk a rekonstrukciót és javítsuk a kép minőségét. Kidolgozunk olyan újszerű vetületválasztó stratégiákat is, melyek képesek kiválasztani a nagyobb információtartalommal rendelkező vetületeket.

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

A kidolgozandó új modellek, módszerek segítségével olyan újszerű rekonstrukciós eljárások valósíthatók meg, melyek kevesebb vetületből, kisebb költséggel, gyorsabban képesek a képet rekonstruálni. A levezetendő matematikai modellek további inverz problémák megoldásában is segítséget nyújthatnak.

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

A tomográfia célja objektumok belső szerkezetéről információt szerezni annak vetületeiből. Olyan matematikai modellek vezetünk le, továbbá olyan számítógépes algoritmusokat tervezünk és implementálunk, melyek a képről rendelkezésre álló információt kitudják használni a rekonstrukció során.
Summary
Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

We investigate connectedness, convexity, and further discrete geometrical properties how they can be relaxed in order to give more realistic descriptions of binary images arising from real tomographic applications. We introduce novel space, time, and space+time regularizing priors and study their effect on the reconstruction. We introduce similarity measures for certain classes of structures motivated by practical applications. We design methods that can measure the information content of the projections, and thus can describe how reliable the reconstruction could be from the given set of projections. We provide adaptive projection selection methods, that can estimate the next important projection angle on-the-fly. We design, implement, and analyse effective discrete tomographic reconstruction algorithms that can use the above priors, reliability measures, and projection selection strategies. Where possible, we prefer GPU programming to increase the speed of the methods. We study the developed techniques in multi-valued scenarios (i.e., where the number of possible values in the reconstructed function/image is small but larger than 2). We devise specific settings for the reconstruction problem for particular applications.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

The aim is to reduce the number of projections used for reconstructing images containing just a few known intensity values. By this we can supply faster and more accurate reconstruction methods. We propose relaxation of geometrical conditions that can be used in flexible models of discrete image reconstruction. We introduce novel regularization terms to speed up the reconstruction process and improve image quality. We develop novel projection selection strategies that can choose the projection directions having more information content than the others.

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

The abovementioned methods can create the possibilty of reducing the number of required projections for the image reconstruction, while in the same time not degrading image quality. This means faster, more precise and cheaper imaging. The results are especially useful in industrial non-destructive testing. The newly introduces flexible geometrical properties will be also useful in several fields of discrete geometry, and pattern recognition and analysis. The devised mathematical models can be adapted to further inverse problems.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

Reconstruction tomography is an imaging technique where the aim is to recover images from their projections. In certain applications just extremely few (2-20) projections are available which on its own is not sufficient to reconstruct images of acceptable quality. We devise mathematical models, design and develop computer algorithms that can incorporate prior information of the image into the reconstruction. We also develop strategies that can choose the best directions the projections should be taken from. By this, under certain circumstances, we can provide good-quality reconstructions also from few projections.

Results in English
The aim of the research was to develop image reconstruction methods capable of incorporating prior information of the image to be reconstructed in order to achieve better image quality, from much fewer projections. We extensively investigated the following image descriptors: convexity, texture, object skeleton, orientation, informative projections. Based on our theoretical observastios, we succeeded to develop efficient reconstruction algorithms. The results are mainly applicable in industrial non destructive testing. We published our results in 9 journal articles, 23 conference proceedings and 7 abstracts.
