magyar összefoglaló
A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?
Ebben a részben írja le röviden, hogy mi a kutatás segítségével megválaszolni kívánt probléma, mi a kutatás kiinduló hipotézise, milyen kérdéseket válaszolnak meg a kísérletek.

A fedési kettőst tartalmazó szoros, hierarchikus hármas rendszerek a szerencsés (fedési) geometria, illetve az erős gravitációs perturbációk miatt minden más égitestcsoportnál jobban alkalmasak arra, hogy megfigyelésük, illetve az észlelések komplex, hozzáértő feldolgozása révén nagypontosságú csillag paramétereket határozhassunk meg rájuk, valamint pályáik és pályasíkjaik, vagyis mozgásuk teljes térbeli elrendeződését is tanulmányozhassuk. E fizikai, dinamikai és geometriai paraméterek nagypontosságú meghatározásával pedig a következő kérdésekre keressük a választ:

- Összeegyeztethető-e a gyengén hierarchikus, szoros hármas csillagrendszerek léte, gyakorisága, fizikai, illetve orbitális paraméter eloszlása a jelenleg elfogadott szoros kettőscsillag keletkezési elméletekkel?

- Mit mondhatunk ugyanerről a kérdésről a kettőscsillagok körüli bolygók kapcsán?

Várható-e extrém (mind a magányos, mind a kettős csillagok elfogadott fejlődési útjától eltérő) fejlődési állapotok kialakulása? Összefüggésbe hozhatók-e ezek a rendszerek bizonyos késői fejlődési állapotot képviselő különleges objektum csoportokkal. (Pl. SN robbanáson átesett többes rendszerek.)

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

Hasonlóan új távlatok nyílhatnak a csillagfejlődés másik végpontja vonatkozásában is, hisz eredményeink lehetővé tehetik esetleges extrém csillagfejlődési végállapotok előrejelzését is a vizsgált rendszerekkel kapcsolatban, amely előrejelzések akár kozmológiai jelentőségű távlatokat is nyerhetnek.

A kutatás szerves részeként kifejlesztett, új generációs, nagypontosságú fébygörbe modellezést és komplex analízist lehetővé tevő programcsomagot mind a tudományos közvélemény, mind a nagyközönség számára hozzáférhetővé kívánjuk tenni (OpenAccess), s ezáltal, reményeink szerint, egy nagyobb kutatói közösség számára, hosszabb távon is további hasznot fog hozni.

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

The long term ultraprecise photometric observations of the CoRoT and Kepler space observatories, besides having successfully completed their main program of finding extrasolar planets, have also enabled the study of entirely new, amazing classes of celestial bodies, like circumbinary planets (even whole planetary systems), close hierarchical triple systems with strong gravitational interactions, and, as a subclass of the latter, mutually eclipsing triple systems. Our goal is the determination, with extremely high precision, of their physical and dynamical properties, indispensable for the understanding of their past, present, and future evolution. To this end we aim to develop a fast and effective, GPU-based modeling program based on the combined use of light variation, radial velocity, timing, and astrometric data. With the inclusion of the latest stellar interior and atmospheric models, gravitational perturbations, dynamically driven pulsations and other higher order effects, we expect the code to reproduce photometric fluxes accurate to 10 micro-magnitudes. Besides the actual code development the analytical and numerical innovation of the underlying dynamical-physical model is also an important part of our research plan. The software package will be used for a complex analysis of the already known targets as well as those being discovered in the meantime. Apart from the satellite observations, we will also make use of additional ground-based spectroscopic and multicolour photometric observations carried out by our group, and others. With the obtained precise stellar and orbital parameters we will make a comprehensive analysis of their dinamical and stellar evolution.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

Thanks to their fortunate geometric aspect and the strong gravitational perturbations occuring in them, hierarchical triple stellar systems containing a close eclipsing pair are currently the best celestial candidates to furnish ultraprecise absolute physical parameters for their members, as well as their spatial configurations including orbits, orbital plane orientations, in other words, a full 3D picture of their motion, by a complex and adept analysis of their detailed observational data. With these information in our hands we are able to answer the following questions:

- Are the occurence rates of weakly hierarchical close triple stellar systems, the distributions of their orbital parameters, consistent with the currently adopted theories of the formation of close binary systems?

- What are the answers to the above questions concerning the planets around such systems?

- What constraints can be derived from these data on the current tidal dissipation theories and, indirectly, on the internal stellar structure?

- Based on the analysis of these systems, what can be said about their future evolution? Can we expect extreme evolutionary scenarios (i.e. something differing completely from the usual tracks assumed for single and binary stars)? Could they be related to some peculiar late-stage objects (like multiple systems having gone through - and survived - a supernova explosion)?

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

Our research is expected to increase the number of well-studied triple systems by 3 to 4 times. (By well-studied we mean systems having precise dynamical and orbital parameters and the full spatial configuration of the orbits determined.) In most cases probably we will be able to determine additional stellar properties as well. This will provide for the first time a statistically significant sample of stars, which will allow us to compare them with the predictions of close binary system formation theories and, in a wider sense, of stellar and
planetary systems too. It will likewise open new perspectives in the study of the final stages of stellar evolution, forasmuch our results
could in principle predict some possibly extreme configurations that the studied systems could evolve into. These aspects might even gain a cosmological importance in the long run.

The next generation modeling and complex analysis software developed along the project will be made freely available both to the scientific community and the wider public (OpenAccess), hoping that it will be useful for a long term and for a wide research community

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

The CoRoT and Kepler space telescopes have provided extremely precise light variation measurements of about a million stars. Having lead to the discovery of hundreds of extrasolar planets, even whole planetary systems, these data have also unveiled many secrets of the stars, enabled sophisticated studies of stellar interiors, atmospheres, and of interactions between stars. Thousands of unknown eclipsing binaries have also been discovered. They are the only types of celestial objects that allow a precise determination of the properties (sizes, masses, ages, etc.) of stars. They also provide help in understanding the processes leading to type Ia supernovae, of utmost importance for cosmology. The observations have also revealed that many eclipsing binaries have a farther third component which, by its gravitational pull, affects the motion of the inner pair, or even eclipses them in some cases. These rare close triple systems allow us to discern even more about the birth and death of stars and their physical relations than the eclipsing binaries do. Our goal is the better understanding of the brightness variations and behaviour of these systems. For this purpose we develop new complex analysis tools (including the development of a light curve modeling program that will allow an analytic description of the orbital motion and an exact modeling of small, partially relativistic effects that were detected by space photometry), which enables the determination of physical and orbital parameters with unprecedented accuracy, making it possible subsequently to discern the details of their past, present and future, thereby assessing the validity of the current evolutionary models.

Zárójelentés

kutatási eredmények (magyarul)
- Elsőként vezettünk le analitikus formulát a fedési kettőscsillagokat tartalmazó kompakt hierarchikus hármascsillagok esetében a harmadik komponens perturbációi keltette fedési minimumidőpont-változásokra (ETV).
- We have derived for the first time an analytic formula for the eclipse timing variation (ETV) caused by perturbations of a third component in hierarchic triple stellar systems containing eclipsing binaries. By solving the inverse problem we identified 62 strongly interacting and 160 somewhat wider hierarchic triple systems in the field observed by Kepler. We have also determined various orbital and physical parameters of these systems, leading to an approximately six-fold increase in the number of triple stellar systems with known mutual inclination. - We have developed a spectro-photodynamic software package capable to simultaneously analyze light-, radial velocity- and ETV-variation curves of arbitrary double, triple and quadruple eclipsing stellar systems. Furthermore, in doing so, the method also accounts for the simultaneous gravitational and tidal perturbations. The software was used for the complex analysis of several triple and - for the first time in this scientific field - quadruple systems discovered during the K2 mission of the Kepler space telescope. - We have also developed a software package for modeling exoplanet systems. It was successfully applied for the analysis of several transiting exoplanets and brown dwarfs. - We have detected for the first time apsidal motions caused by tidal distortion for an exoplanet, thus obtaining for the first time the k_2 Love number - characterising the internal structure - for an extrasolar planetary object.
