A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

A projekt kísérleteit a RIKEN programtervező tanácsa jóváhagyta, tehát a kutatás végrehajthatósága biztosított.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?

A neutrongazdag ionok dipólválasza a maganyag állapotegyenletében szereplő szimmetrienergia sűrűségfüggésére adhat megszorítást.

A kettőscsillagok röntgenkitörése Galaxisunk leggyakoribb robbanásos jelensége. Mégis, megfigyelhető tulajdonságaikat csak nagyjából tudjuk értelmezni. A tapasztalt, anomális (többcsúcsú, extrém hosszú) fénygörbék mögött rejlő atommagfizikai okokat kis/negatív protonbefogási Q értékkel rendelkező atommagokra, az rp folyamat várakozási pontjaira vezetik vissza. Ezek közül kívánjuk vizsgálni a 34Ar és 64Ge izotópokat.

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

Utóbbinak remélhetőleg a projektben való részvétele PhD felvételét is fogja segíteni.

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

Méréseinket nemzetközi együttműködésben, a radioaktív ionnyalábokkal végzett kísérletek vezető intézetében, a Japánban található RIKEN kutatóintézetben végezzük.
Summary
Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

One of the most important branch of nuclear astrophysics is the study of explosive events in the Universe. The nuclear reactions behind these cataclysmic events involve short-lived nuclei. Therefore, they can only be investigated by radioactive ion beams. However, the first generation of accelerators could enter regions relatively close to the valley of stability so far, and the capability of the detection systems set a limit on the reachable isotopes.

At RIKEN, Japan a new generation, radioactive ion beam accelerator complex (RIBF) was built some years ago, and similar facilities are under construction in Europe and the USA. The equipments can provide beam intensities even thousand times more than the present ones, and open up such region in the nuclear chart that were unavailable up to now. Parallel to these advancements, developments of detector arrays, that can unprecedentedly increase the efficiency and precision of measurements, have been carried out worldwide with a our significant contribution.

The main aim of the project is to combine these unique, state-of-art ion beams and detection devices in order to investigate physical systems and effects of nuclear astrophysics relevance which have been unavailable earlier. We intend to study the three nucleon force, multineutron systems, the pygmy resonance and the exotic waiting points in the astrophysical rp process.

The research is to be performed at RIBF in an international collaboration (SAMURAI) with colleagues from Japan, USA, France and Germany. The experiments included in the project has already been accepted by the RIKEN Program Advisory Committee, therefore the feasibility of the project is ensured.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

Most of the properties of the thousands of nuclei and reactions forming the network of the astrophysical r and rp processes are experimentally unknown. The exotic nuclear effects and systems might significantly alter the path of these processes.

The melting of shell closures in the region of nuclei with extreme neutron/proton ration can explain the differences in the expected and measured r process abundances. We study this far beyond the neutron drip line. We might answer the long-standing question on the role of three nucleon forces in structuring the nucleons into atomic nuclei as well as whether strange systems like tetraneutron can exist in Nature.

The presence of the exotic pygmy dipole resonance in neutron rich nuclei can greatly influence the probability of the neutron capture playing a central role in the r process. The electric dipole response of neutron rich nuclei can constrain the density dependence of the symmetry energy of the nuclear equation of state (EOS). This symmetry component of EOS might be responsible for the existence of the presently discovered neutron star with a mass of twice the Sun, and it essentially determines the energy output in type II supernovae. We seek answers for these questions by investigating 68Ni and 48,50,52Ca isotopes.

X-ray bursts of binaries are the most frequent stellar explosions in our Galaxy. Yet, the observable properties are not fully understood. The nuclear physics reasons behind the anomalous (multipeaked, long duration) characteristics can be traced back to nuclei with small/negative proton capture Q values, the waiting points (WP) of the rp process. 34Ar and 64Ge are two important WP nuclei to be studied.

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

With the help of our experiments we intend to investigate some important phenomena and reactions of nuclear physics and nuclear astrophysics. Utilizing the unmatched intensity of the RIKEN radioactive ion beams and the available high-tech equipments, we can move forward to the understanding of astrophysical r and rp processes.
We can open a new research direction between RIKEN and MTA Atomki primarily for the rp process poorly known and experimentally little investigated so far. We plan to invite other parties to join our experimental efforts in order to mainly help with hydrodynamical modeling.

The project provides an opportunity to enlarge our group and involve young students. During the project we will have a possibility to submit more beam time requests on the rp process to the RIKEN PAC in a collaboration with the SAMURAI members, which can establish a long-term cooperation that is based not only on gamma spectroscopy, that we carried out at together with RIKEN so far, but also the study of unbound nuclear states.

Since the project includes fundamental physics it does not have a direct societal application. However, with the training of young researchers it helps to maintain the unavoidable nuclear physics knowledge of the next generation in Hungary. Therefore, three postdoctoral fellows joined the project who can get deeper insight into the basic questions of nuclear physics. Furthermore, three university students enter our group, two of them hopefully receives their BSc and later MSc degrees based on the present experiments while one of them can write his Master thesis based on his work in the project. We expect that the latter person also enters the PhD school of University of Debrecen during the course of the project with a supervision by the principal investigator.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

When we look at the night sky at a silent place and stare at the glimmering stars in the vast Universe, many of us ponder how we came to existence and what we are made of. Some of us like Carl Sagan believe to have the answer: ``we are made of starstuff''. It is truly amazing to imagine that our building blocks originate from the bonfire of stars or once participated in cataclysmic events such as supernovae. However, the question of how exactly we are shaped from the ashes of stars and what the structure of those building blocks look like is even more intriguing to a physicist. This is what drives the present research.

As a result of our investigations we might get closer to to understand the abundance of elements observed in the Universe and to describe astrophysical objects, especially neutrons stars and X-ray bursts. We intend to perform the experiments in an international collaboration at RIKEN, the leading facility for physics with radioactive ion beams situated in Japan. The project would not only beneficial for nuclear physics but also could offer a possibility of young scientists (postdoctoral and university students) to take part in state-of-art experiments with knowledgeable researchers of the field.

Results in English
The unique intensity of the radioactive ion beams of RIKEN and the world-class facilities available on site allowed us to perform ten complex and expensive experiments which are related to the astrophysical r and rp processes responsible for the creation of heavy elements in the Universe. By studying the neutron-rich 76Ni nucleus, we showed that the shell closure at proton number 28, standard among the stable nuclei, remained intact around neutron number 50. We extended the investigation of the shell closure at neutron number 16 recently discovered among unstable nuclei to the region of nuclei with unbound ground state. We studied a long-standing question of nuclear physics, the existence of tetraneutron by investigating 28O nucleus and the 8He(p,pα)4n reaction as well as the exotic pygmy resonance in 50,52Ca nuclei that might significantly change the neutron capture playing a key role in the r-process. We investigated the 8Be(p,g), 64Ge(p,g) és 65As(p,g) reactions crucial in the creation of nuclei, not available for neutron capture, located at the proton-rich side of the valley of stability. During the project we developed a vacuum chamber and preamplifiers for the position sensitive silicon detectors applied at the experiments, as well as involved eight Hungarian students in the research. Two of them already started their Ph.D. and one of them applies for a Ph.D. position in nuclear physics. The Program Advisory Committee of RIKEN accepted our newly submitted proposal.
