A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

A kutatás célja, hogy kortárs nemzetközi térelméleti kutatások elemzésével megújítsa a hazai tértudományi diskurzust, és hogy közép-kelet-európai nézőpontból hozzájáruljon a nemzetközi vitához. Ezeket a célokat két megfigyelés motiválta. Egyrészt, a nemzetközi tudományos életet jó ideje a különféle elméletek együttlétezése jelelemezi, de ez alig jelent meg a hazai tudományos életben. Másrészt, a posztszocializmus iránti nemzetközi tudományos érdeklődés a ’90-es évek után megcsappant és a közelmúlt térelméleti újításai nem kellőképpen tükrözik a posztszocialista, krízis utáni társadalmi-gazdasági fejlődés sajátosságait.
Kutatásainkban áttekintjük a legfontosabb nemzetközi irányzatokat (pozitivizmus, neomarxizmus, posztstrukturalizmus stb.) és feltárjuk azok gyakorlati relevanciáit a hazai és a kelet-közép-európai közegben. Workshopokon, konferenciákon, a publikációkon keresztül megismertetjük a hazai tudományos közösséget a különböző eszmeáramlatok nyelvezetével, módszereivel, alkalmazásuk előnyeivel és hátrányaival. A projekt átfogó célja a szemléletalakítás, a nemzetközileg elfogadott tudáskészletek hazai elfogadtatása és hazai kontextusokra való adaptálása. A kortárs térelméleti irányzatok magyarországi kontextusban való adaptációjának lehetőségeiről nemzetközi tudományos fórumokon is számot adunk, így kívánjuk elősegíteni a hazai tértudományos tevékenység jobb nemzetközi beágyazottságát és elfogadottságát.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?
Ebben a részben írja le röviden, hogy mi a kutatás segítségével megválaszolni kívánt probléma, mi a kutatás kiinduló hipotézise, milyen kérdéseket válaszolnak meg a kísérletek.

Kutatásunk alapkérdései a következőek:

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

A kortárs térelméletek közép-kelet-európai relevanciáinak feltárásával új lendületet kívánunk adni a posztszocializmusról szóló nemzetközi vitának (Stenning, Hörschelmann 2008; Timár 2004a; Timár, Enyedi 2004).

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

A magyar társadalmi-területi jelenségek kutatására alapozva, közép-kelet-európai kontextusból kívánunk hozzájárulni a térről folyó nemzetközi vitához, amelyet ma döntő mértékben „nyugati”, angol-amerikai kutatók folytatnak.
A különböző térelméleti eszmeáramlatok megismerése jelentősen segíti a globalizálódással együtt járó, komplex gazdasági, társadalmi és politikai folyamatok megértését (pl. nemzetállami határok relativizálódása, globális áramlatok differenciálódása, centrum-periféria viszonyok), e folyamatok által keltett kihívásokról való társadalmi-tudományos eszmecserét és vitát, illetve a kihívásokra a megalapozott válaszadást.
Summary
Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

The project has the double aim of reinvigorating Hungarian academic discourse in the fields concerned with aspects of space and spatial development through insights from contemporary thinking about space and spatiality, and of contributing to international theoretical-conceptual debates “from within” the Central and Eastern European (CEE) empirical context. These aims are motivated by two key observations. First, international scholarship has been increasingly characterized by the co-existence of various theoretical perspectives, the Hungarian academic community has barely taken notice of these. Second, initial scholarly concerns with post-socialism in the 1990s have faded away, and newly emerging theories of space and spatiality have been insufficiently informed by the specificities of post-socialist and post-crisis socio-economic development.
The project will review the most significant international streams of thinking about space and will examine their practical relevance in the CEE context. We will introduce some of the most influential theoretical perspectives to the Hungarian academic community at workshops, conferences and through publications. We will examine the possibilities of applying contemporary theoretical perspectives on space to developments in Hungary and will make suggestions as to how these can be modified to make (better) sense of certain phenomena in a post-socialist setting. We will report on our findings at international academic fora, and will thus contribute both to stimulating discussions on sociospatial change in CEE countries, as well as to the better international embeddedness and recognition of Hungarian spatial scientific scholarship.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

The key questions of our research are the following:
• Which are the most influential international currents of thought concerning the theorization of space and spatiality and which theoretical perspectives shape regional development practice (both internationally and in Hungary)?
• How do these theoretical perspectives appear in university curricula and in policy and planning practice in Hungary?
• To what extent are the perspectives in question applicable to the post-socialist (Hungarian) context, and in what way can they be rethought so that we can gain a better understanding of sociospatial phenomena in this context?
Our research and the monograph summarising our findings will not develop a single master narrative, but will offer: 1) a systematic review of a set of interlinked theoretical approaches, 2) in-depth, empirically informed reflections on applying ‘Western’ theoretical-conceptual frameworks to the analysis of particular socio-spatial phenomena in Hungary, as well as 3) suggestions for conceptual renewal in order to allow for a better understanding of these phenomena.

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

Similarly to other Central-Eastern European countries, new insights of the philosophy of science and recent currents of social theory have had little impact in Hungary. Due to ideological path-dependence, positivist, materialist, realist and structuralist perspectives have continued to dominate the social sciences, including disciplines concerned with aspects of space and spatial development. Arguably, this has also implied that different policies, planning and the (re-)organization of public services have not sufficiently relied on nuanced understandings of (the spatiality of) socio-economic processes. Although since the mid-1990s, an increasing number of Hungarian universities have offered courses and degrees at BA, MA and PhD levels in different field of spatial development, curricula have largely remained out of touch with developments in international scholarship concerning the theorization of space.
However, given the complexity of the patterns of interdependence and of the networks interaction that shape spatial development at every scale, it is crucial to broaden the scope of thinking about space among scholars, policy-makers, as well as the broader public. Recent trends – intensifying inequalities in the aftermath of the global financial crisis, shifts in European Union policies and centralizing state administration – underline this necessity. By introducing new approaches and methods that have been principally absent from Hungarian scholarly discourse to date, we expect to release substantial creative energies and produce new insights. The monograph resulting from this project can be used in university curricula and will, in addition to other publications and events, substantially contribute to fostering theoretical pluralism and a culture of interdisciplinary exchange in Hungary. Moreover, through our findings concerning the relevance of current theories of space for the understanding of CEE space-economies, we will reinvigorate international debates on post-socialism and will address the uneven relations inherent to geographies of knowledge production (e.g. Stenning and Hörschelmann, 2008; Timár, 2004, Timár and Enyedi, 2004).

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

Different actors in society possibly think (about) space in different ways, on the basis of diverging philosophical assumptions. It is only recently, however, that this has become widely acknowledged in scholarly disciplines (such as geography or regional studies) that deal with (aspects of) space. Today, these disciplines are characterized by the parallel existence of different worldviews, none of which wishing to exclusively define how to think (about) space and what existence in space means. Our research will investigate the relevance of those internationally established theories of space that have been missing from the Hungarian scholarly tradition in the Hungarian and, more broadly, in the Central and Eastern European context. Our aim is to broaden the horizon of academic community and the public, and to contribute to the wider acceptance of the idea that space can be conceived of in many different ways. Subsequently, based on our research on current socio-spatial phenomena in Hungary, we will also contribute to international theoretical debates about space – debates that, to date, have been largely conducted by ‘Western’/Anglo-American scholars.
The knowledge of various theoretical perspectives on space helps to come to grips with the complex economic, social and political processes brought about by globalization (e.g. the relativization of nation-state borders, the differentiation of global flows, centre-periphery relations). Furthermore, it facilitates academic and public debate about the challenges implied by these processes, as well as the development of well-founded responses to these challenges.

Final report

After conducting a review of the international and domestic literature, we structured the concepts of space of current relevance in the CEE area into four distinct conceptual sets displaying a chronological order on the basis of their emergence and adaptation by spatial sciences in the international academic arena. We distinguished between • empirically grounded positivist spatial sciences applying predominantly quantitative/statistical scientific methods (from the 1950–1960s to the present), • ideologically committed Marxist and feminist geographical currents (from the end of the 1960s to the present), • various Postmodern spatial concepts (from the 1980s to the present), • and new materialist relational concepts of space (from the 2000s to the present). We unearthed the general theoretical bases and paradigmatic frameworks of these approaches and conducted more in-depth analyses or demonstrated the practical applicability of various subjects. Our research results were discussed in the framework of several workshops, conferences, disseminated in publications, integrated into an MTA doctoral dissertation and two Ph.D dissertations and summarized in the 19 (+1) chapters (31.5 printed sheets) of the volume of studies entitled „Current spatial theories in a Central Eastern European context”.
