A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

A társadalmi – etnikai, vallási, nyelvi stb. – diverzitás dinamikája (keveredése, rétegződése), és ezek társadalmi kohézióra gyakorolt hatásai olyan témák, melyek vizsgálatára a nyugat- es kelet-európai államok szamara egyaránt égető szükség mutatkozik. E projekt Magyarországon talán elsőként tesz kísérletet arra, hogy közvetlenül kapcsolódjon egy vadonatúj, napjainkban formálódó diszciplína, a „diverzitás-kutatás” multidiszciplináris tudományterületéhez.
A kutatás célja a diverzitás ideáltípusainak elkülönítése, a diverzifikálódás jellegzetes irányainak és rétegződésének modellezése, valamint a jelenség társadalmi kohézióra gyakorolt potenciális hatásainak vizsgálata. A projekt egyszerre feszeget tudomány-rendszertani kereteket, tartalmaz módszertani újításokat, es próbál földrajzi térszemléletet nyújtani olyan új és ígéretes kutatási témáknak, mint pl. a „szuper-diverzitás” koncepció.
Az alapkutatás tágabb célja egy elméleti keret megalkotása, melyen belül bizonyos társadalmi folyamatok az eddigieknél jobban nyomon követhetők és pontosabban előre jelezhetők lehetnek; melynek segítségével a későbbiekben célzott terepmunkák szervezhetők, melynek eredményeire mélyebb, kvalitatív-szemléletű esettanulmányok építhetők, és amely a civil és politikai szféra számára is hasznos konklúziókkal szolgálhat.
Habár a kutatás térbeli kerete – annak átfogó, elméleti jellege miatt – nem előre definiált, a projekt az európai (elsősorban poszt-szocialista) társadalmakra fokuszál. A modell alapján kijelölt példák komparatív elemzésével lehetségessé válik a diverzifikálódás hatásainak – azok általános és szituatív elemeinek – elkülönítése.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?
Ebben a részben írja le röviden, hogy mi a kutatás segítségével megválaszolni kívánt probléma, mi a kutatás kiinduló hipotézise, milyen kérdéseket válaszolnak meg a kísérletek.

A kutatás központi kérdése a legegyszerűbb es legrövidebb formában a következő. Hogyan definiálható és vizsgálható egy adott közösség esetében az etnikai, vallási, nyelvi stb. diverzifikálódás folyamata; hogyan rétegződnek egymásra a különböző diverzitások; és milyen hatást gyakorol(hat) mindez a társadalmi kohézióra? Vajon a különböző irányú átalakulásokhoz különböző hatásminták kapcsolódnak?

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

A másság, a sokféleség, a társadalom növekvő heterogenitása korunk meghatározó élményei. Vannak térségek, ahol a kulturális sokszínűségnek évszázados hagyományai vannak, másutt a modern migrációs trendek következményeként egészen új jelenség. Azonban bármerre nézünk is Európában, a különféle eredetű, de hasonlóan – csoportidentitások formájában – megjelenő diverzitás mindenütt komoly kihívást jelent. Az etnikai, vallási, nyelvi, kulturális diverzitás társadalmi stabilitásra és kohézióra gyakorolt lehetséges hatásai talán a leghevesebb viták tárgyát képezik a társadalomtudományban, a politikában és a „hétköznapi diskurzusokban”. A közelmúlt szomorú eseményei (Breivik multikulturalizmus-ellenes „harca” Norvégiában, a Charle Hebdo elleni támadás kapcsán felszínre kerülő feszültségek Franciaországban, vagy épp Ukrajna etnikai törések mentén való kettészakadásának veszélye) különböző szempontból ugyan, de ugyanerre a kérdésre irányították a figyelmet.
Égető szükség lenne tehát arra, hogyan minél jobban megismerjük és megértsük a diverzitás problematikáját, és a jelenség dinamikáját. A pályázatban a következő kérdésekre keresem a választ. Hogyan mérhető a diverzitás „mértéke”, hogyan modellezhető a diverzitási minták átalakulásának dinamikája, hol találhatók Európában a legjobb példák a különböző típusú tendenciákra? Vajon milyen potenciális hatásai lehetnek e folyamatoknak a társadalmi kohézióra, és léteznek-e hasonló hatásminták, vagy minden szituációt egyedi esetként kell értelmeznünk?
Summary
Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

The dynamics (mixing, stratification) of social – ethnic, religious, linguistic etc. – diversity and their effects on social cohesion present a subject matter which urgently calls for studies both in Western and Eastern Europe. Perhaps for the first time in Hungary, this project attempts to directly connect to the multidisciplinary field of ‘diversity studies,’ a brand new discipline emerging and forming today.
The goal of research is to separate the ideal types of diversity, to model the typical directions and layers of diversification, and to study the potential effects of the phenomenon on social cohesion. The project simultaneously challenges the recent ‘taxonomy of sciences’, introduces methodological novelties and tries to provide a geographic approach for new and promising research subjects such as the concept of ‘super-diversity’.
The broader aim of the basic research is to create a conceptual framework whereby certain social processes can be traced better and predicted more exactly; which later helps organize targeted field works whose results enable deeper-going, qualitative case studies, and which can provide useful conclusions for the civil and political spheres.
Although the research area of the investigation has not been predefined due to its general, theoretical nature, the project focuses on European (mainly post-socialist) societies. By the comparative analysis of selected examples – with typical patterns of diversification – it is possible distinguish the general and specific factors of the effects on social cohesion.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

The central issue of research, in its simplest and shortest form, is the following: How to define and study the process of ethnic, religious, linguistic etc. diversification in a given community; how are the different diversities layered on each other; and what effect does (can) it all have on social cohesion? Are the differently oriented transformations connected with different types of effect?
In order to solve the keywords of the central issue, further questions have to be answered. To study the change of diversity, it is necessary to first define the concept, to separate the ideal types of the phenomenon (e.g., absolutely homogenous, absolutely fragmented, absolutely polarized, mixed type), as well as to develop the quantitative methodology needed for the analysis. It is important to study the circumstances and the parameters of change: where, when why, and in which direction the observed structure moved.
The stratification of diversities means both the stacking of ‘old’ and ‘new diversities’ (‘super-diversity’ phenomenon: if the ‘traditional’ diversity of a community and the different types of diversities from later waves of immigration overlap), and the layering of major group identities. The relationship of ethnic, religious, linguistic heterogeneity and social cohesion has long been strongly debated in the literature. As well as significantly refining the results of previous studies by modeling the dynamics of diversification, the conceptual framework this project aims to draw up can present new aspects of research, which may act as a decisive factor in assessing e.g. the success or failure of integration.

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

As Stuart Hall surmised, the ‘coming question of the 21th century’ for the Western world is how to fashion ‘the capacity to live with difference, i.e., with the increasing pace of mixing cultures, languages, ethnicities and religions – still the most important identity-forming categories. In our region of ’Zwischeneuropa,’ itself an ethnic mosaic, as well as in Eastern Europe, the status of historical minorities and traditional multiethnic areas has still remained open and unresolved.
The methodological system to be developed by the basic research would be an innovation of international significance, since a conceptual framework of quantifying ethnic, religious, and linguistic diversity and modeling diversification would be developed, which until now have received little attention in the literature. The novelty of the research originates in the approach that diversification is interpreted as a dynamic process which can change not only in its level but also in its direction and nature; moreover, diversities can be ‘layered’ on one another. By knowing more thoroughly the dynamics of the phenomenon, the changing directions of diversity pattern could be reconstructed better and predicted more exactly – easier to be classified – than before.
This can provide important outcomes for both society and the political sphere, since, as many researchers pointed out, the potential effects of ethnic, religious, and linguistic diversity are vastly significant on the different sections of society. We can conclude the assumption that the different directions of diversification as well as its specific layers certainly have different effects on the inter-group relationships which determine the strength of social cohesion, indirectly being the indicator of the success of integration. The model can help identify regions (primarily in East-Central, South-East and East Europe) where the risk of growing ethnic tensions has to be taken into account more seriously, e.g., because of the rapid polarization of society. Therefore in decision-preparing process the outcomes of this project could serve as a basis to handle an extremely complex social phenomenon, by making it measurable and modelable.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

Otherness, variety and the increasing heterogeneity of society are major experiences of our age. There are regions where the traditions of cultural diversity go back to centuries, while elsewhere it is a completely new phenomenon as the consequence of modern migration trends. However, wherever we look in Europe, diversity, with various origins but with similar appearances – in the form of group identities – presents a serious challenge everywhere. The potential effects of ethnic, religious, and linguistic diversity on social stability and cohesion have sparked perhaps the most intense debates in the social sciences, in politics but also in ‘everyday discourses.’ The gloomy events that happened recently (Breivik’s ‘fight’ against multiculturalism in Norway, the tensions surfacing after the attack on Charlie Hebdo in France, or the peril of dividing Ukraine along ethnic lines), although from different angles, directed attention to the same question.
There is a burning need to get to know and understand better the problems of diversity and the dynamics of the phenomenon. My project seeks answers to the following questions. How can diversity be quantified? How can the dynamics of changing diversity patterns be modeled? What are the best examples of the different types of trends in Europe? What are the potential effects of these processes on social cohesion? Are there similar patterns of effect or every situation should be handled as a single case?
