A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

A faanyagok hasznosítása, felhasználása világszerte növekvő tendenciát mutat, köszönhetően a faanyag kedvező tulajdonságainak. A faanyagok felhasználását azonban korlátozza néhány jellemző.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?
Ebben a részben írja le röviden, hogy mi a kutatás segítségével megválaszolni kívánt probléma, mi a kutatás kiinduló hipotézise, milyen kérdéseket válaszolnak meg a kísérletek.

A faanyagok felhasználása során örök probléma a gombaállóság, a színtartósság valamint a nedvességfelvétel kérdése. Mindhárom jellemző javítására léteznek már eljárások, azonban a nanovegyületek előtérbe kerülésével újabb lehetőségek nyílnak meg. A faanyagvédőszerekkel kapcsolatban egyre inkább elvárás a minél alacsonyabb környezetterhelés. A gombaállósággal szorosan összefüggő probléma a faanyag nedvességfelvétele. A csökkenő nedvességfelvétel a dimenzióstabilitás növekedését is okozza, ami a fából készült szerkezetek élettartamát szintén növeli.

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

A nanovegyületek alkalmazása minden területen egyre nagyobb teret hódít.

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

Summary
Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

Utilization of wood shows increasing tendency, due to the prosperous properties of wood material. However, utilization is limited by several wood parameters. Several solutions are established already to influence favourable these properties in form of wood modification processes. First of all heat treatments and the acetylation process came into general use, which are nowadays used in industrial scale too. Drawback of these methods is that they have a large energy need, which deteriorates the competitiveness of wood against some other material (e.g. plastics). Furthermore the production of modified wood results in some harmful substances for the environment, which have to be neutralized. The use of conventional wood protecting agents is more and more limited, thus the need for new, environment friendly wood preservatives is continuous. Accordingly, the aim of the planned research is to improve some major properties, like dimensional stability, colourfastness (UV-protection) or decay resistance of wood with the help of nanoparticles. Nowadays, in terms of wood material, the use of nanoparticles is rare, but in case of plastics and textiles are a number of examples for the successful use of nanoparticles. With some minor alterations these knowledge could be interpreted also for wood. Beside the investigation of the treatments’ efficacy the examination of the mechanism with analytical methods (SEM, FT-IR, etc.) is also needed.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

In the course of utilizing wood decay resistance, colourfastness and moisture uptake is a permanent problem. There are several methods to improve these properties, but with the appearance of nanoparticles some new opportunities present itself. The low environment charging is more and more expected against wood preservatives. With the use of nanoparticles very low concentrations can result an advantageous effect, thus environment charging can be reduced by the low amount of preservatives. Moisture uptake of wood is in close connection with decay resistance. By decreasing the moisture uptake of the wood the essential conditions of fungi worsen. The decreasing moisture uptake also results in increasing of the dimensional stability, which also enlarges the service life of constructions made of wood. To decrease moisture uptake there are several methods in use, but these are expensive and have some environmental risks (e.g. heat treatments, acetylation). The goal is to take out these methods with more effective treatments. Some of the advantages of wooden products are the decorative colour and pattern, which are less weatherproof. With the use of nanoparticles a good protection can be achieved in the whole cross-section, which is not sensitive to surface damages.
In terms of plastics and textiles existing already some solutions for the problems mentioned above which could be interpreted also for wood with some minor alterations. The basic issue is what efficiency can be achieved by wood material with the use of nanoparticles, which are already used successful in other fields. Another basic issue is whether some new nanoparticles could be used effective to serve our purposes?

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

The use of nanoparticles gains ground continually. The use of nanoparticles in wood industry is not revealing although in other scientific fields it was already proved that with its use significant improvement can be achieved in some properties of different materials. This research makes possible the use of nanoparticles for improving some major wood properties considering the special properties of wood. The knowledge obtained by other materials cannot be used completely for wood, some minor alterations are necessary. The results could open a new way for wood modification. Nowadays, the relations of nanoparticles in wood science is less investigated because of its novelty, however this field get more and more attention.
With the obtainable results new industrial processes could developed in the future, which could improve the competitiveness of wood against other materials. The advantage of wood is that it is a renewable, CO2 neutral raw material which processing has much less energy demand than most of the competing material (e.g. metals, plastics). With the increased use of renewable materials the sustainable development is contributed. The utilization field of wood can be enlarged with the improvement of the properties. Furthermore, the valuable European and tropical wood species could be reinforced with low-value wood species, which were until now not able for utilization in some fields because of its unfavourable properties.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

One of the major points of sustainable development is that the materials used should originate a large scale as possible from sustainable economy and renewable sources. Wood is one of the best examples for the latter one, because it is a renewable, CO2 neutral raw material which has an important role in the economy and in the everyday also. It is represented well in the increasing utilization of wood worldwide. Beside of that wood has some unfavourable properties which limit its use. For example the moderate resistance against wood destroying fungi. This is partly an advantage, because wood is a biodegradable material, on the other hand this is a disadvantage if it happens too soon. Another unfavourable property is that woods colour is easily changing because of the sunlight. Woods moisture content is depending on the climatic conditions (temperature and relative humidity) of its environment. This is unfavourable because with the change in moisture content the dimensions of wood are changing also (shrinking/swelling effect). It is possible to improve these properties with some existing wood modification processes, but these have a large energy demand and/or have environmental risks. As recently the use of nanoparticles gained ground, some new possibilities rose for wood modification also, which are in other fields (plastic- and textile industry) successful used already. With some minor alterations these knowledge could be interpreted also for wood and this could enlarge the utilization of low-value wood species, which were until now not suitable in some fields because of its unfavourable properties.

A kutatási pályázatban három fő területre összpontosítottam. Egyrészt a különböző nanorészecskék fa-víz kapcsolatokra gyakorolt hatását tanulmányoztam.

In the research proposal, I focused on three main areas of my work. On the one hand, I studied the effect of different nanoparticles on wood-water relations. On the other hand, I analyzed the effect of the selected nanoparticles on the biological resistance of the wood, and thirdly, the effect on UV resistance (color durability). As far as possible, I tried to support the experimental concept and results with the help of as many tests as possible. Dimensional stability of wood has been improved by the hydrophobization and the clogging of cell lumens by the selected treatments. The results achieved are particularly promising considering that they are achieved by much lower retention of the active ingredient than conventional methods are using. Strengthening of the hydrophobic character was especially remarkable with the use of fluorinated nanoparticles. Increasing biological durability was also successful in several cases with the use of selected nanoparticles. Several methods have been discovered during the tests, which not only increase durability but also resist leaching. A large number of experiments were also carried out to increase UV stability. In this process, a large number of combinations of nanoparticles and carriers were tested with or without surface treatment. In this case, we also experienced a significant increase in UV resistance during both outdoor tests and artificial aging.
