A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

A mezőgazdasági művelés intenzifikálódása a biodiverzitás drasztikus csökkenését eredményezte Európa-szerte.

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

Summary
Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

Traditionally, ecologists are focusing on local mechanisms to explain processes. Biogeographers are addressing spatial patterns at regional and/or continental scales. Multiple-scale studies merge these two approaches; thus, understanding scale-dependence is vital to the management of natural resources and for the conservation and restoration of biodiversity. Population dynamics, community composition and biotic interactions are all influenced by processes operating at multiple spatial scales. This underlines the necessity of multiple-scale studies with a strong emphasis on the analysis of patterns and processes in fragmented natural grasslands embedded in agricultural and urban landscapes. We plan large-scale experiments with an exceptionally high number of replicates (> 300 grassland fragments varying in soil type, size, and management history). To study the success of spontaneous succession and active restoration more than 120 former crop fields on sandy, loess, rocky and alkali soils were identified formerly. Complex sampling of plant (cover, biomass, and seedbanks), ground- and plant-dwelling insect assemblages (carabids, leafhoppers, orthopterans, butterflies, true bugs, spiders) is planned. There are four work packages with eight study questions in the proposal covering the most important aspects of conservation and restoration of grassland biodiversity at multiple scales. We evaluate the effects of urbanisation, agricultural intensification, different management techniques (mowing, grazing and burning) and restoration measures (spontaneous succession, seed sowing) at local-, regional and landscape-scale on the abundance and diversity of plant and animal taxa.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

The present proposal covers the most important aspects of conservation and restoration of biodiversity in grasslands at multiple scales: For detailed analyses we included four work packages and in each two study questions:

WP-1 Landscape-scale drivers of grassland biodiversity: Urbanisation and fragmentation
(i) What is the effect of increasing urbanisation on the local species composition of natural habitat fragments?
(ii) Can the landscape composition mitigate the negative effect of urbanisation on species composition of natural habitat fragments?

WP-2 Spatial diversity components of grasslands: Regional and landscape-scale species pool
(iii) How is the local species pool related to the size and shape of natural grassland fragments?
(iv) How is the local species pool affected by the differences in regional and landscape-scale species pool?

WP-3 Effect of local management and landscape complexity on grassland biodiversity
(v) How is the effect of local management influenced by the landscape composition?
(vi) Are the differences between the intensity and frequency of different management practices masked by landscape-level compositional differences?

WP-4 Temporal patterns of grassland biodiversity: Spontaneous succession and restoration
(vii) How can spontaneous recovery processes contribute to restoration success in different landscapes?
(viii) How does regional and landscape-scale species pool affect the spontaneous succession and technical reclamation of grasslands?

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

Developing improved strategies for biodiversity conservation and sustainable land-use requires improved knowledge of landscape-moderated biodiversity patterns and processes. In the proposal in four work-packages we aimed at to study the most important aspects of conservation and restoration of grassland biodiversity at multiple scales. Based on the proposal we understand the effects of urbanisation and agricultural intensification on the local species composition of natural grassland fragments and helps in sustaining and protection of biodiversity of urban areas. We explain how the landscape composition (e.g. neighbouring diverse habitat patches) mitigate the negative effects of human activity on diversity of natural grassland fragments. Understanding scale-dependence is vital to the management of natural resources and for the conservation and restoration of grassland biodiversity. Landscape-level compositional differences influence the success of management and restoration actions. They may mask the differences between intensity and frequency of management practices when there are species-rich fragments in the surroundings. However, till now only a few studies evaluated the role of joint effects of local- and landscape-level factors as the drivers of biodiversity. In the proposal we aimed at to show how spontaneous recovery processes can be included in the planning of biodiversity conservation and restoration actions, and evaluate how the local-, regional- and landscape-scale species pool can influence recovery processes. We identify ‘best practices’ for nature conservation and restoration actions derived from evidence-based case studies. The proposal is connected to the mainstream of ecological research; thus, a high attention is given for presentation and publishing. Our research is related to the crucial questions of ecology, conservation biology and biogeography; thus, expected results are highly welcome in the leading international journals of the field.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

We aim at to explore the complex mechanisms sustaining biodiversity and their utilization to support and restore biodiversity. The general question is, how can we mitigate the loss of biodiversity in a changing environment? There is a subtle effect of the human civilization on biodiversity. Urbanization, habitat fragmentation, agricultural intensification and the decline of traditional land-use practices are resulting in the decrease of biodiversity. These topics are in the forefront of ecological and environmental research worldwide. Ecosystem functions and services are key factors for the sustainability of the biosphere and also of the human life. Rapid environmental changes caused by human activities are considered a major risk for natural grassland ecosystems. For biodiversity conservation and restoration of grasslands it is essential to gain knowledge on factors sustaining biodiversity at local-, habitat- and landscape-scale. Understanding biodiversity dynamics of grassland ecosystems in agricultural and urban landscapes, are of crucial importance. We evaluate the effects of urbanisation, agricultural intensification, management techniques (mowing, grazing and burning) and restoration measures (spontaneous succession, seed sowing) at local-, regional and landscape-scale on the abundance and diversity of plant and animal taxa. Our results support nature conservation and restoration projects and also contributes to improving and sustaining the quality of human life.

Final report

Magas-diverzitású megkeverék vetésének hatását vizsgáltuk fajszegény gyepekben; a vetett fajok sikeresen megtelepedtek a gyepben és sikeresen kolonizálták is a környéket, növelve a gyep biodiverzitását. A cserjésedés komoly veszélyt jelent a gyepek diverzitására. A fragmentáció eredményeképpen megnő a szegélyek szerepe a biodiverzitás fenntartásában. A szegélyeknek a diverzitás fenntartásában játszott szerepe jelentősen különbözik attól függően, hogyan jöttek létre.
Results in English
We tested the effect of sowing high-diversity seed mixtures in artificial gaps to increase grassland diversity. Most of the sown species established permanently in the gaps, and spread over. In grasslands shrub encroachment is frequently a real threat. We found that species composition and richness highly resistant to encroachment. Thus, grasslands can be restored by the suppression of woody species, as their species pool still contains grassland species targeted for restoration. We tested the effect of local and landscape-level factors on spiders, odonates, and the web of rose gall parasitoids. Our findings suggest that both local and landscape-level factors are important drivers in maintaining spider diversity. These factors should be considered simultaneously during the management of grasslands. Our findings emphasized the importance of terrestrial environment on Odonata both on local and landscape scales. We found that link density and compartmentalisation of bush networks, and local extinction within parasitoid webs increased with increasing landscape homogenization. In Debrecen we found that functional green spaces are potentially connected; thus, there is a possibility for species to disperse between the green spaces. We found that diversity-enhancing properties of edges differed according to their history. Edges maintained by natural processes had significantly higher species richness than their interiors, while edges with anthropogenic influence did not.
