A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

Ennek a pályázatnak a keretében új alternatívákat vizsgálunk meg spinek elektromos ill. mágneses térrel történő kontrollált változtatására, melyhez különböző spin textúrákat hozunk létre grafénben különféle két dimenziós heterostruktúrák létrehozásával.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?
Ebben a részben írja le röviden, hogy mi a kutatás segítségével megválaszolni kívánt probléma, mi a kutatás kiinduló hipotézise, milyen kérdéseket válaszolnak meg a kísérletek.

Spintronika szempontjából alapvetőek olyan eszközök, amik alkalmasak a spin információ manipulálására és kiolvasására. Ebben a pályázatban különböző módszerekkel tervezünk új spin texturákat létrehozni grafénben ill. más két dimenziós anyagokban azzal a céllal, hogy spin manipulásra legyenek használhatóak. Ezek a 2D rendszerek kivételes elektromos tulajdonságúak: nagy a mobilitásuk, az elektron sűrűségük hangolható ill. topologikusan nem triviális állapottal rendelkezhetnek. Új spin textúrák létrehozására pl. mágneses szigetelők (MI), nagy spin-pálya kölcsönhatással rendelkező anyagok (SO) vagy mágneses nanostruktúrák proximity effektusát fogjuk kihasználni közel helyezve őket grafénhez ill. topologikus szigetelőkhöz. Pl. grafént MI helyezve spin korrelációk jelentkezhetnek az előbbiben a hullámfüggvények átfedésének köszönhetően. A ferromágnesben meglévő spin felhasadás kihatással lesz a grafénen található spinekre. Hasonlóan, ha erős SO-ú anyagra helyezzük a grafént, akkor proximity effektussal SO kölcsönhatás megjelenése várható. Mindezeken kívül, valóstérben létrehozott spin szerkezeteket is vizsgálni fogunk, amiket grafénre helyezett mágneses vagy szupravezető nanoszerkezetekkel hozunk létre. Megfelelően tervezett nanomágnesek lehetővé tehetik topologikusan nem triviális objektumok (pl. skyrmionok) létrehozását, ami kihatással lesz az alatta található grafénre. Mindezeken túl ha a grafén síkot részlegesen lefedjük szupravezetővel, majd mágneses térbe helyezzük, térben változó mágneses teret lehet a grafén felületén létrehozni. Heterostruktúrákon végzett kísérleteken kívül elméleti számításokat fogunk végezni az optimális szerkezetek meghatározására.

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

Projektünk erősen kapcsolódik a Flagship három területéhez: WP1 Új anyagok, WP3 Grafénen túli 2D anyagok alapjelenségeinek megértése, WP6 Spintronika. iSpinText új ötletekkel és koncepciókkal járul hozzá a Flagshiphez: Egyfelől új anyagok fogunk kifejleszteni (topologikus szigetelők, mágneses szigetelők). Másrészt SO hozunk létre MI vagy erős SO rendelkező anyagra építve grafént. CVD folyamattal növesztett grafén ill. TMDC mintáinkat más csoportok tudják majd hasznosítani. Új anyagokból létrehozott áramköröktől a grafénen túlmutató áramköri funkciókat várhatunk. hBN-be csomagolt grafénre tervezett pontkontaktusok fontos szerepet kapnak WP3-ban, mivel lehetővé teszik pl. Veselago-lencsék létrehozását. Projektünk céljai összhangban állnak a flagship spintronikai terveivel. Az MI, TI és erős SO létrehozott proximity hatások valamint mesterséges térbeli mágneses szerkezetek vizsgálatait célzó kutatások kiegészítik a Flagspip tevékenységét új érdekes spinstruktúrák vizsgálatával.

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára. Ez az összefoglaló a döntéshozók, a média, illetve az érdeklődők tájékoztatása szempontjából különösen fontos az NKFI Hivatal számára.

Grafén felfedezését követően hamarosan felismerték, hogy spin alapú elektronikai (spintronikai) alkalmasok céljára rendkívül ígéretes, mivel a spin információ nagy távolságokon megőrződik benne. Mára már 10 mikrométert meghaladó spin terjedési hosszt lehet elérni, ami lehetővé teszi spintronikai áramkörök készítését. Napjaink grafénen alapuló spintronikai kutatásainak a központi kérdése, hogy hogyan lehetne a spineket manipulálálni kontrollált módon grafénben. Az iSpinText pályázat keretében új alternatívákat vizsgálunk meg spinek elektromos ill. mágneses térrel történő kontrollált változtatására, melyhez különböző spin textúrákat hozunk létre grafénben különféle két dimenziós rétegszerkezetek felépítve. A vizsgálatainkhoz atomi rétegekből építünk fel új heteroszerkezeteket újszerű mintakészítési technikákkal. A kísérleti munkát elméleti számításokkal egészítjük ki. A pályázat új módszerei és kutatási céljai a jövőbeli spintronikai alkalmazások létrehozását segítik elő.
Summary
Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

After the discovery of graphene it was soon realized, that graphene is the perfect candidate for spintronics, due to its high mobility, low spin-orbit coupling and small or absent hyperfine fields. By now, spin relaxation lengths longer than 10 um have been demonstrated. Although the results are still far from expectations, the achieved values already make graphene an ideal platform to transfer spin information. The key question at the present stage, how the manipulation of spin can be achieved with graphene devices. In this proposal we will investigate novel routes to add electric and magnetic control over the spin by introducing different spin textures in graphen by various 2D proximity heterostructures.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

For spintronics, it is essential to construct devices where the read-out and the manipulation of spin information can be achieved. Here we propose different ways of creating novel spin textures in graphene (Gr) and other 2D materials with the goal to use them for spin manipulation purpose. These systems have superior electronic properties such as high mobility, gate tuneable electron density, topologically non-trivial state. Our strategy is to use proximity effect of homogenous magnetic insulators (MI), magnetic nanostructures or large spin-orbit (SO) coupled materials on Gr and topological insulators (TI) in order to induce novel spin texture in two-dimensional (2D) states of GR and TIs. When e.g. Gr is placed in the vicinity of a MI, spin correlation can enter via overlap between the wave functions. It has been proposed that, a ferromagnetic spin-splitting can act on the spin of Gr carriers. From materials, in which the SO coupling is huge, Gr may inherit sizeable SO interaction. In the case of a TI substrate a giant proximity induced SO gap is predicted. Besides experiments on these heterostructures, theoretical calculations will help us to identify the most promising combination. With magnetic and superconducting nanostructures placed on top of Gr we will realize real space spin textures, as well. Properly designed nanomagnets can allow us to realize topologically non-trivial objects, skyrmions, which may penetrate into the Gr sample. Moreover, by partially covering Gr with superconductors (SC) and placing it in external B field, the spatial profile of the magnetic field in the Gr can be engineered using the Meissner-effect.

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

The Graphene Flagship collects excellent groups throughout Europe with the common research goal of understanding graphene and other 2D materials. Our proposal is strongly connected to three work-packages of the graphene flagship: materials (WP1), fundamental science and 2D materials beyond graphene (WP3) and spintronics (WP6). We believe that our work can add new ideas and materials concepts to the Flagship. Firstly, new materials will be introduced, e.g. topological insulators, BiTeI and magnetic insulators (MI). The proximity effect from MIs and materials with strong SO interaction can induce exchange and SO interaction in Gr. Secondly, from the optimized grown CVD Gr other Flagship collaborators could benefit. This is also the case for CVD TMDCs, which we will also grow during the project. Thirdly, nanocircuits based on these materials can provide extra functionalities compared to Gr. The development of middle contacts for encapsulated Gr is
highly relevant for WP3 of the Flagship, since this could open the field up to Veselago-lense like experiments or measurements in the Corbino geometry. These goals are in full synergy with the roadmap of the spintronics work package of the flagship, but the proximity effects from magnetic insulators, from topological insulators, or from new, high spin-orbit materials are complementary to the Flagship’s present experiments. Moreover, the artificial structures from this proposal give a completely, new road to achieve interesting spin structures.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

To achieve our goals we will produce structures based on Van der Waals pick-up technique, and will develop advanced fabrication methods, like point-contacts to encapsulated graphene, or metallic superstructures separated from graphene by few layers of h-BN. The experiments will be supported by DFT and transport calculations. The methods and goals outlined in this proposal will bring graphene based future spintronics applications closer.

Ionos folyadékkal történő kapuzással sikerült jelentősen csökkentenünk a levékonyított BiTeBr kristály elektron sűrűségét, ami ötszörösére növelte a reciprocitást sértő válaszát a kristálynak. Elméleti számolások megmutatták, hogy síkbeli feszítés hatására BiTeBr/grafén heteroszerkezet ígéretes topologikus szigetelő állapot létrehozására. Új BiTeBr/grafén heteroszerkezetet fejlesztettünk, amiben egy új spintronikai funkciót sikerült kimutatni, ami elektromosan kontrollálható spin injektálást tesz lehetővé szobahőmérsékleten. A spin injektálást nem-lokális spin mérések segítségével mutattuk ki, a jelenség hátterében a BiTeBr óriás spin-pálya kölcsönhatása áll.

Graphene is an ideal platform to transfer spin information. The key question at the present stage, how manipulation of spin can be achieved. We investigated various graphene based heterostructures to add electronic and magnetic control over the spin. Graphene was combined with TMDC and giant Rashba spin-orbit materials as BiTeX (X=I, Br). Proximity spin-orbit interaction (SOI) was demonstrated for graphene/WSe heterostructure and the character of SOI was identified to be valley-Zeeman type. First isolation of single layer BiTeI was demonstrated by novel exfolation technique with a remarkble size of 100um, which is stable at ambient condition. Due to Rashba spin-orbit BiTeBr shows a peculiar non-reciprocal transport behavior. With ionic liquid gating technique we managed to reduce electron density in thin BiTeBr crystal which allowed to significantly enhance this non-reciprocal response. It was theoretical predicted that BiTeBr/graphene heterostructures are promising to engineer topological insulator in the presence of in-plane strain. In developed BiTeBr/graphene heterostructre we demonstrated a novel spintronics functionality, which allows electric controlled spin injection into graphene at room temperature. Spin injection was confirmed by non-local spin measurement and it originates from the giant Rashba spin-orbit effect of BiTeBr.
