A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

Új anyagok kifejlesztése szempontjából alapvető fontosságú a kristályos anyagok plasztikus deformációja során fellépő jelenségek megértése a mikroszkópikus skálától egészen az atomi felbontásig. Habár a plasztikus deformációért felelős diszlokációk egyedi tulajdonságai jól ismertek, jelenleg keveset tudunk azok kollektív mozgásának sajátosságairól.

A deformáció folyamatát véletlen térben lokalizált diszlokáció lavinák jellemzik. Ez a viselkedés szoros kapcsolatban van a régóta ismert ténnyel, hogy a diszlokációk különböző mintázatokba rendeződnek, amelynek karakterisztikus mérete szintén mikron nagyságrendű. A pályázat keretében megvalósuló kutatás legfontosabb célja új kísérleti módszerek kifejlesztése, diszkrét diszlokáció dinamikai szimulációk végzése és a korábban kidolgozott diszlokáció kontinuum elmélet továbbfejlesztése.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?

A feszültség-deformáció görbe véletlen lépcsőket tartalmaz, aminek oka diszlokáció lavinák megjelenése. Ennek a nem determinisztikus viselkedésnek a modellezéséhez új megközelítés szükséges. A témavezető tanszékén megépített nanodeformációs eszközzel a SEM/FIB berendezésünkben in-situ vizsgálni szeretnénk különbözőképpen elődeformált anyagokból kialakított mikrooszlopok deformációs tulajdonságait. A vizsgálatokat diszkrét diszlokáció dinamikai szimulációkkal tervezzük kiegészíteni. A statisztikus tulajdonságokkal kiegészített elmélet a mérnöki gyakorlatban használatos fenomenologikus leírásmód helyébe léphet.

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

A kiértékelési eljárás alapját a témavezető korábbi elmélete képezi. Amint sikerül megoldanunk az eljárás jelenleg még nyitott problémáit egy olyan módszer lesz a kezünkben, ami képes meghatározni a mikrostruktúra fontos jellemzőit. Az eljárással vizsgálni szeretnénk a deformált mikrooszlopokban kialakuló diszlokáció szerkezetet. Ilyen vizsgálatokat korábban nem végeztek.

A harmadik terület amin dolgozni tervezünk a diszlokációk kontinuum elméletének továbbfejlesztése.

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

A deformáció folyamatát a feszültség véletlenszerű hirtelen leesései jellemzik. A minta aktuális viselkedése mintáról mintára jelentősen változik.
Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

An in-depth understanding of the plastic response of crystalline materials on multiple scales, ranging from macroscopic sizes down to the atomic resolution, is vital for developing new materials. Although the properties of individual dislocations, the elementary carriers of plastic flow, have already been developed, much less is known about the collective motion of these line-like defects. The new experimental techniques allowing to manipulate on the micron size level and the large scale computer simulation available prompted a focused interest of the research community towards this field. The current proposal addresses some of the key topics on the collective properties of dislocations.

According to the recent breakthrough experiments, plasticity of the single crystals is dramatically different when the sample size is reduced to the micron scale. The deformation is characterized by intermittent, and spatially localized avalanches of the dislocations. The problem is closely related to the long known but still not understood fact that dislocations tend to form patterns with a characteristic length scale in order of a micron. The primary aims of the project are to develop new experimental methods, perform large scale discrete dislocation dynamics simulations, and further develop the continuum theory of dislocations. This complex approach would allow us to obtain a detailed model of the collective motion of dislocations. In general terms the question we are going to work on is what is the statistical physics of a dissipative system consisting of objects with long range interaction with a quenched disorder represented by the slip planes of the dislocations.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

Recent experiments on different crystalline materials revealed that the plastic response of a specimen with characteristic size in the order of micron is completely different from the ones obtained on bulk samples. The stress-strain curve consists of random stress or strain bursts caused by the collective avalanche type motion of dislocations. To model this non-deterministic nature one has to take a new approach based on the collective statistical properties of dislocations. With the nanodeformation stage developed at the Department of the PI we are going to perform a series of in-situ tests of different micron sized pillars (micro-pillar) with different initial dislocation content. During the deformation tests the acoustic emission signal generated by the dislocation avalanches will be recorded too. With the new HR-EBSD technique, we are going to further develop, the internal stress distribution generated by the dislocations can be directly measured. Such a complex study have never been performed so far. With these we can gain a complex picture of the statistical nature of the deformation process. The experimental studies will be complemented to large scale discrete dislocation dynamics (DDD) simulations. Moreover we are going to incorporate the experimental and DDD simulation results into the continuum theory of dislocations the PI and co-workers proposed. The theory completed with the new stochastic features can replace the phenomenological plasticity theories applied in the engineering practice.

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

The primary goal of the project proposed is to obtain a complex picture of the stochastic type of plastic response observed during the deformation of submicron sized crystalline samples. During the past years we built a nanodeformation stage suitable to perform tests in the chamber of the SEM/FIB. Unlike the commercially available ones the unique feature of the device is that it is designed being able to detect very fast stress or stain burst due to its analogous feedback system. An acoustic emission detector is also attached to the device to detect the sound waves generated by the collective motion of dislocations. (It should be noted that the motion of an individual dislocation is not detectable.) Such a complex setup is not available anywhere else. The large amount of micro-pillar compression tests planned will allow us to get a detailed statistical picture about the deformation process in such small samples.

The HR-EBSD measurement technique we are going to further develop is available only at the Department of the PI and at the University of Oxford. It is a completely new method being able to determine the probability distribution of the internal stress and the stress map generated by the dislocations. The evaluation method to determine the dislocation density from the stress distribution is based on the theoretical calculations of the PI. Once the open issues we are going to address are resolved we will have in hand a new powerful method to determine important microstructural parameters. We plan to apply the new method to study the deformation microstructure developing in deformed micro-pillars a study that has not been accomplished earlier.

The third issue we are going to work on is to further develop the continuum theory of dislocations. The first attempt to directly link the properties of individual dislocations to the evolution of continuous dislocation density field was developed by the PI. The theory has been recently extended to account for dislocation patterning in case of single slip. We are going to generalize it for multiple slip and we are planning to incorporate the stochastic character of dislocation motion observed experimentally.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

With the modern technology it is now possibleto fabricate micron side objects. Recent experimental investigation revealed that the deformation properties of such a small samples are rather different from the ones traditionally applied in engineering practice. The deformation process is characterized by sudden random drops of the stress. The actual response varies to specimen to specimen. So, basic quantities like the strength of the materials cannot be determined. In the micron size regime we can characterize the materials only on a probabilistic manner. In the project we are going to develop new experimental techniques, numerical and theoretical models to account for this new feature showing similarities with a number of known phenomena like earthquake. The results obtained can help to develop and design new miniature parts for several applications.

kutatási eredmények (magyarul)
A kapott legfontosabb eredmények a következők: A 2D diszlokáció kontinuum elméletet továbbfejlesztettük. Továbbfejlesztettük a nanodeformációs berendezésünket. Meghatároztuk a mintázat fraktál dimenzióját.
kutatási eredmények (angolul)
The results obtained are the following: The 2D continuum theory of dislocations was further developed. By the stochastic dislocation dynamics simulation method proposed pattern formation predicted by the theory was numerically investigated. The 2D continuum theory was generalized for the case of curved dislocation. The new theory is the first one obtained by a systematic manner. The custom made nanodeformation device was further improved. In compress Zn micropillars the statistical properties of stress drops and acoustic emission signals was analyzed in details. The results obtained indicate that despite the fundamental differences in deformation mechanism and involved length- and time-scales, dislocation avalanches and earthquakes are essentially alike. In magnesium beside dislocation motion twinning is a key mechanism of plastic deformation. For the first time we could detect twin nucleation and grows in compressed magnesium micropillaras. By a new sectioning method the 3D internal stress an GND maps was determined in compressed Cu micropillars. It is found that like in bulk deformed Cu crystal regions with large dislocation density develop in micropillars too. For the first time in the literature dislocation cell structure was observed by HR-EBSD in compressed Cu single crystals. The fractal dimension of the structure is also determined.
