magyar összefoglaló
A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

A pályázatban olyan kémiai szerkezeteket kívánunk létrehozni, ahol a gradiensek központi szerepet játszanak disszipatív
szerkezetek önszerveződésében. Ezen gradiensek kívülről szabályozhatók pl. a nyomás, a mágneses tér, a kémiai összetétel változtatása révén, vagy önként jönnek létre autokatalízis segítségével. Majd ezek transzportfolyamatokat hoznak létre diffúzió, advekció formájában, melyek kémiai reakcióval történő csatolása egyensúlytól távoli reakció-diffúzió-konvekció rendszereket eredményez. Az alábbi négy különböző rendszert kívánunk tanulmányozni, amelyekben a gradiensek fontos szerepet töltenek be.
1. Csapadékképződési folyamatok dinamikáját követjük és jellemezzük kvázi két térbeli dimenzióban, ahol a felható erők hatása minimális.
2. Áramlásvezérelt rendszerben készítünk csöves szerkezeteket szabályozható körülmények között.
3. Szerves reakción alapuló autokatalitikus rendszert állítunk össze annak érdekében, hogy szupramolekuláris szerkezetek önrendeződését vezéreljük.
4. Gradiensvezérelt rendszerekben mágneses tér és viszkozitásváltozás révén fellépő jelenségeket tanulmányozunk.

A kísérleti eredmények mennyiségi jellemzése és a hozzátartozó modellszámítások elvégzése révén értelmezzük a megfigyelt jelenségeket.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?
Ebben a részben írja le röviden, hogy mi a kutatás segítségével megválaszolni kívánt probléma, mi a kutatás kiinduló hipotézise, milyen kérdéseket válaszolnak meg a kísérletek.

Az alábbi általános főkérdésekre szeretnénk válaszolni az eredményeink alapján:

1. Hogyan befolyásolható a csapadékképződés dinamikája az áramlással gradiensvezérelt rendszerekben?
2. Hogyan hat az alkotó elemek kémiai karaktere a csapadék tulajdonságaira?
3. Találhatunk-e új, szerves reakción alapuló, oszcillációt vagy reakciófrontot mutató rendszert?
4. Vezérelhetjük-e a lágy anyagok önrendeződését autokatalízissel?
5. A kívülről indukált gradiensek jelenléte miatt melyek a mintázatképződésre gyakororolt fő hatások?

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

Élő szervezetek ugyanakkor hasznosítják a létező gradienseket a saját önszeveződő szerkezetük fenntartásában. Autokatalitikus rendszerekből eredő gradiensek valószínűleg képesek a lágy anyagok önrendeződésének vezérléséhez. Paramágneses anyagok jelenlétében a külső mágneses tér kölcsönhathat a térbeli gradiensekkel, és ezáltal befolyásolhatja a mintázatképződést.
A projekt alapkutatásnak felel meg, amelynek a várható eredményei azt a koncepciót hivatottak bizonyítani, hogy hogyan jellemezhető mennyiségileg a térbeli gradiensek által vezérelt disszipatív rendszerek viselkedése, illetve hogyan tudjuk ezeket a rendszereket önrendeződő szerkezetek szabályozott szintéziséhez vagy anyagok morfológiájának szabályozásához általánosságban használni.

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

Ebben a munkában nemcsak le tudjuk írni a térbeli gradiensekkel vezérelt rendszerekben tapasztalt viselkedést, hanem bemutatjuk, hogy anyagok szabályozott szintézise is lehetséges a gradiensek jelenlétében.

Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

In this proposal we plan to construct chemical systems where gradients play a central role in the self-organization of dissipative structures. These gradients may be controlled externally, e.g. pressure, magnetic field, chemical composition, or may spontaneously emerge from autocatalysis. They will then bring about transport processes in the form of diffusion, advection and by coupling with chemical reaction generate a reaction-diffusion-convection system far-from-equilibrium. We will investigate the following four different systems where gradients are important.
1. We will monitor and characterize the dynamics of precipitation processes in confined geometry, where buoyancy effects are minimized.
2. We will investigate flow-driven systems to synthesize tubular structures under controlled conditions.
3. We will construct autocatalytic systems based on organic reaction in order to drive the self-assembly of supramolecular structures.
4. We will study the emergent behavior of gradient-driven systems in magnetic field and with change in viscosity.

We will try to understand the observed phenomena by quantitative description of the experiments and performing corresponding modeling calculations.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

We wish to answer the following main general questions based on our results:

1. How is the dynamics of the precipitate formation affected by the flow in gradient-driven systems?
2. How does the chemical character of precipitants influence the precipitate properties?
3. Can we find new systems exhibiting oscillations or reaction fronts using organic reactions?
4. Can we drive the self-assembly of soft matter with autocatalysis?
5. What are the major effects on pattern formation in the presence of externally induced spatial gradients?

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

In traditional chemical methods the reactants are well-mixed in an effort to maximize the rate of reaction and hence the yield.
In these homogeneous systems, however, we eliminate spatial gradients and with them any thermodynamic forces that would otherwise keep the system away from equilibrium. Living systems on the other hand take advantage of the existing spatial gradients in maintaining their self-organized structures. In this work we would like to point out the possibility of constructing such chemical systems where gradients are essential. In order to show that it is not just a peculiar behavior of a particular system, we will present four general scenarios to demonstrate the importance of gradients. In case of precipitation reactions the concentration gradients maintained by the flow will correspond in a sense to biomimetic conditions in the synthesis of inorganic minerals. The gradients resulting from autocatalytic systems can possibly drive the self-assembly of soft materials. When paramagnetic moieties are involved, external magnetic field can interact with the spatial gradients to affect the pattern formation.
The project itself represents a fundamental research where the anticipated results will be a proof of concept on how the behavior
of dissipative systems driven by spatial gradients can be described quantitatively, how these systems can be in general used for
controlled synthesis of self-assembled structures or for selective morphology control of materials.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

The spatial gradient of a quantity (concentration, density, etc) will generate a process in which matter is transported in space. Living organisms use these gradients to maintain or develop their highly structured body. In this work we demonstrate that we can construct simple chemical systems where self-organization is driven by spatial gradients. By presenting four example cases, we will demonstrate the generality of the idea. In the study we will not only be able to describe the behavior of the system driven by spatial gradients but also show that controlled synthesis of materials can be achieved in the presence of gradients.

kutatási eredmények (magyarul)
Munkánk során disszipatív szerkezetek önszerveződését tanulmányoztuk. Ezen, külső szabályozásból vagy autokatalízis révén spontán kialakuló, gradiensek diffúzió vagy advekció formájában transzportfolyamatokat hoznak létre, amelyek kémiai reakciókkal kölcsönhatva egyensúlytól távoli reakció-diffúzió-konvekció rendszereket eredményeznek. Külső szabályozásnál a közegmozgás egyéb transzportfolyamatot is indukál, amelynek jelentős hatása van a helyi túltelítettség térbeli eloszlására. Kezdetben térben elkülönülő reaktánsoknál a makroszkopikus csapadékmintázatot az áramlás irányában erős advektív áram, míg arra merőlegesen diffúzív fluxus jellemzi, amelyek kölcsönhatása befolyásolja a csapadék szerkezetét. Két fő tényező vezérli a mintázatképződést: a térbeli gradienshez tartozó transzportfolyamat közvetlen hozzájárulása és a kémiai időskála térbeli eloszlása. Belső visszacsatolás esetén, szerves autokatalitikus hálózatok alakítható ki, amelyekkel biomimetikus körülmények hozhatók létre az önszerveződés megvalósulásához.
kutatási eredmények (angolul)
We have studied chemical systems where gradients play a central role in the self-organization of dissipative structures. These gradients, controlled externally or spontaneously emerging from autocatalysis, bring about transport processes in the form of diffusion, advection, and by coupling with chemical reactions generate a reaction-diffusion-convection system far-from-equilibrium. With external control, the fluid motion introduces an additional transport process that has a substantial effect on the spatial distribution of local supersaturation. Hence with initially separated reactants, macroscopic precipitate pattern formation is characterized by strong advective currents along the flow, and diffusional fluxes transverse to that, the interplay of which has an effect on the structure of the precipitate. Two major factors drive the pattern formation: direct contribution from the transport process associated with the spatial gradient and the spatial distribution of chemical time scales. With internal feedback, organic autocatalytic networks can be constructed to generate biomimetic conditions allowing self-organization.
