magyar összefoglaló
A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

A kutatás fő céljai:

* Az ellenforgó légcsavarokról – szakkifejezéssel élve: koaxiális propfanok – gyűjtött mikrofontömbös adatok elemzése a hajtóművet tartó pilon akusztikai hatásának vizsgálatára. Ehhez azt a nyalábformálási módszert fogjuk használni, amelyet korábban a pilontól elkülönített propfanok vizsgálatára fejlesztettek ki.

* A nyalábformálási eljárás továbbfejlesztése a pilon koaxiális propfanokra gyakorolt zaját is figyelembe véve.

* Kijelölt régiók vizsgálata a nyalábformálási térképeken a jellemző szélessávú zajforrások hatásának mélyebb megértése érdekében, azokon a frekvenciákon is, ahol ezek nem számítanak jelentős zajforrásnak.

* A pilonnak a koaxiális propfan-zaj tonális komponenseinek jellemző sugárzási hatékonyságára gyakorolt hatásának vizsgálata.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?
Ebben a részben írja le röviden, hogy mi a kutatás segítségével megválaszolni kívánt probléma, mi a kutatás kiinduló hipotézise, milyen kérdéseket válaszolnak meg a kísérletek.

Az ellenforgó légcsavar – szakkifejezéssel élve: koaxiális propfan – propulziós technika az Európai Unió Clean Sky programjának egyik legjelentősebb motívumának tekinthető. A Clean Sky program célja 2020-ra megfelezni a légi közlekedésből adódó széndioxid kibocsátást a 2000-es szinthez viszonyítva. Bár a koaxiális propfanokkal elérhető propulzió hatékonysága jelentősen nagyobb, mint a korszerű sugárhajtású hajtóműveké, ennek előnyeit egyelőre mégsem lehet kiaknázni, mivel előbb a magas zajkibocsátáson és egyéb technológiai problémákon szükséges úrrá lenni. Az 1980-as években végzett vizsgálatok kiindulási információt adtak a hajtóművet tartó pilonnak a koaxiális propfan zajára gyakorolt hatásáról. A tervezési irányelvek hozzájárulnak a zajforrások mérsékléséhez vagy megszüntetéséhez, miáltal a koaxiális propfan technika tovább fejlődik, közelebb hozva e hajtóműtípus széleskörű alkalmazhatóságát.

A jelen kutatás célkitűzései a koaxiális propfan + pilon konfiguráció együttes aeroakusztikai és aerodinamikai vizsgálatát teszik szükségessé, melynek révén feltárhatóak a zajkibocsátás és az aerodinamikai viselkedés közötti összefüggések.

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

Main objectives of the investigation:

* To investigate Counter-Rotating Open Rotor (CROR) phased array microphone data in order to provide information as to the acoustic effect of a pylon on CROR noise signature by applying a beamforming approach which has been developed by the investigating team for uninstalled CROR.

* Further development of the beamforming approach, taking into account the effect of a pylon on CROR noise signature.

* To investigate regions of interest on CROR beamform maps in order to better understand the contributions from characteristic broadband noise sources to the noise level outside of the frequency domains where they are considered to be significant sources.

* To investigate the effect of a pylon on the characteristic radiation efficiency of the tonal components of CROR noise.

* To investigate regions of interest on CROR beamform maps in order to better understand the characteristic harmonics of tonal noise sources which are often secondary noise sources and therefore hidden under the broadband or other dominant sources in a beamform map.

* Categorization of CROR and pylon noise sources according to noise generation mechanism, location, character, and significance, conducting detailed investigations of both broadband and tonal noise sources.

* To provide a better understanding as to the connection between the aerodynamics and aeroacoustics of a CROR with a pylon, making it possible to determine the noise generation mechanisms and to make suggestions as to their elimination.

* To provide aerodynamic and aeroacoustic design guidelines for CROR based on the results of the investigations.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

The Counter-Rotating Open Rotors (CROR) is considered as one of the top contenders in the European Union’s Clean Sky Initiative, which aims to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 50% by 2020 as compared to 2000 levels. Though the propulsive efficiency of CROR is considerably higher than that of modern turbofan engines, it cannot yet be taken advantage, since high noise levels and other technological difficulties first need to be overcome. In the 1980s CROR investigations provided some information regarding the effect of a pylon on CROR noise, but turbomachinery technology and measurement technology have evolved a great deal since. Compared to other investigations looking at the effect of a pylon on CROR noise, this investigation uses phased array microphone data and beamforming technology in order to localize, characterize, and determine the significance of and the noise generation mechanisms of isolated CROR mounted on pylons, providing design guidelines for the next generation of CROR. In this way CROR technology will be further advanced and noise sources will be reduced or eliminated, bringing CROR technology closer to the matured state it must reach prior to going into production.

The fulfilment of the objectives of the proposed project necessitate a concerted aeroacoustic and aerodynamic investigation on the CROR + pylon configuration, in order to discover the correlation between noise emission and aerodynamic behavior.

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

Investigating Counter-Rotating Open Rotors (CROR) using microphone arrays and beamforming technology, in conjunction with an aerodynamics analysis, we are able to approach the question of pylon effect on CROR noise from a perspective not possible in the 1980s, when single microphone data was processed providing directivity and spectral content information. At the time measurement technology could not localize noise sources the way in which beamforming can today. Using this technology we are able to localize the broadband noise sources to regions of the blades and the tonal noise sources to given Mach radii, characterize the bandwidths of noise sources and therefore determine the broadband and tonal noise source families to which they belong, and determine the significance of the noise sources as well as the noise generation mechanisms responsible for them. In completing these investigations, we will have a great deal of basic information regarding CROR noise sources, and will be able to make suggestions for eliminating them through design guidelines. Members of our research team have collaborated with others, providing some of the most significant contributions in the area of noise source localization for uninstalled CROR using beamforming technology, explaining rotating coherent noise sources and providing an approach for investigating tonal and broadband noise source families, as presented for reference nominal takeoff and approach test cases. The approach will be advanced and utilized herein, providing results which will be compared to the above stated reference cases. Though not the only beamforming investigation of CROR underway, the investigation team is cooperating with some of the high-competence key contributors in the field: such as NASA Glenn Research Center, University of Sherbrooke, and Trinity College Dublin. Other investigations are also under way at institutions such as DLR and Snecma, who are preparing for a new series of ground tests as early as this year. It is not our intension to compete with the aforementioned institutions, but rather to present our capabilities in order to later cooperate with them in further EU funded as well as directly industry-funded projects.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

In 2008 the European Union announced the Clean Sky Initiative, which aims at reducing the environmental impact of air transport. The goals include a significant reduction of carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxide as well as noise emission. Counter-Rotating Open Rotors (CROR) appear as a promising solution, being the subject of the proposed research. This engine type consists of two rotors which rotate around the same axis in a counter-rotating manner. By means of such arrangement, a better propulsive efficiency can be achieved, as compared to the nowadays used jet propulsion engines. As a result of increasing fuel prices, CROR became subjects of research since the nineteen-eighties, however owing to the high noise levels and other technological difficulties associated with CROR, the investigations were brought to an end.

In these days, the research related to CROR has become topical again. The objective of the proposed research is the reduction of CROR noise. In order to reach this goal, it is necessary to investigate the aeroacoustic and aerodynamic properties of CROR with a pylon in a concerted manner. As a novelty the microphone array measurement technique will be used, which can determine the location and strength of the noise sources based on the data recorded with an array of microphones. The acoustic data are plotted in the form of noise source maps. On the basis of the concerted investigation of the source maps and the flow characteristics, design guidelines will be formulated for the noise reduction of CROR to prescribed levels. As a result their advantage of especially favorable efficiency can be taken in the field of air transport.
