A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

Kapcsolódó elméleti kutatásaink is e témába mutatnak, a hadronizáció folyamatának megértése, a hadronspektrumok alakjának vizsgálata. Emellett kutatócsoportunk központi szerepet vállalt az ALICE 2020 utáni, nagy luminozitású LHC Run3 futásának előkészítésére is, amely a jelenlegi LHC luminozitás közel egy nagyságrenddel történő növelését tervezi. Ezen fejlesztési tevékenységeink: (i) az világ időprojekciós kamráját (TPC) átépítjük GEM alapúvá, amely K+F feladatban a Magyar ALICE Csoport központi szerepet játszik, mi végezzük a GEM-lemezek minőség ellenőrzésének harmadát (GEM QA). (ii) A megnövelt luminozitás nagyobb adatmennyiséggel jár, részt veszünk az adatgyűjtő és adattovábbító rendszer (DAQ) fejlesztésében is (O2), ahol a CRU2 projektben koordinátori szerepet játszunk. (iii) A gyorsabb szimulációk elvégzéséhez a olyan új szimulációs programokat fejlesztünk, amelyekkel az új elméleti modelleket integrálva, gyorsabb és pontosabban szimulálhatjuk a megnövelt luminozitású LHC nagy statisztikájú méréseit (HIJING++, GeantV R&D). (iv) Üzemeltetjük a GRID Tier-2 központot.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?

A QGP kutatás céljára készült a CERN LHC ALICE komplex óriásdetektora. Kutatásunk során a kvark-gluon plazmát a nagy transzverzális impulzusú (pT>2-5 GeV/c) hadronokkal vizsgáljuk (kemény próbák), amelyek információt adnak a keletkezett halmazállapot sűrűségéről, viszkozitásáról, szín-sűrűségéről.

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

A CERN LHC ALICE detektor fejlesztése -- hasonlóan a többi óriásdetektoréhoz -- nélkülözhetetlen. Az detektor a CERN nehézionfizikai céldetektora, jelenleg a világ legnagyobb térfogatú TPC-jével rendelkező detektor, kifejezetten a nehézionok ütközésének vizsgálatára lett tervezve.

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

Summary
Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

Our proposal will ask financial support for the continous work of the Hungarian ALICE Group including the TPC and DAQ (O2) R&D in addition to the connected theoretical researches for 2016-20 at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The research plan aims to analyse the 14 TeV pp and 5.07ATeV PbPb data which is being measured during the Run2 stage of the LHC (2015-18). We will participate in these measurements actively by shifts and analysis of the identified hadron spectra taken by TPC, HMPID, and ITS. Our project focus on the high transverse momentum region, where we plan to investigate the identified hadrons and tagged jets. Our related theoretical researches are connected to this topic understaning the hadronization processes by spectra distributions. Next to this, our research group plays a key role in the preparation of the high-luminosity LHC Run3 data taking by ALICE after 2020, which would increase LHC luminosity with an order of magnitude. Our R&D activities are: (i) upgrade of the world's largest Time Projection Chamber (TPC) using GEM technology. We support this by providing the GEM Quality Assurance (GEM QA) by scanning the one-third of the large-scale GEM foils. (ii) The increased luminosity results increased amount of data, so we participate in the upgrade of the Data AcQuisition (DAQ) system (O2) in which we coordinate the CRU2 development. (iii) In order to have faster simulations, we will develop new, faster simulation softwares, which includes new theoretical develpoments and faster calculation techniques (HIJING++, GeantV) to support the higher-statistics increased-luminosity measurements. (iv) We will manage the local Tier-2 GRID site as well.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

In the ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) we are able to make such a high energy densites, which were existed at the birth of the Universe, microseconds after the Big Bang. The matter of the Universe at thet time was the special phase, the so called Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP). The physical properties of the QGP determinated the evolution of the Universe later, and even its final form. The key question of our research field is the investigation of the QGP phase by measuring and modeling these porperties in laboratories. The giant and complex ALICE detector of the CERN LHC facility were built for the reason investigating the QGP. The QGP can be measured by high transverse momentum (pT>2-5 GeV/c) hadrons (hard probes), which can give us information on the formed phase's density, color-density, and viscosity. However, analysing hadron is a challenging task, since formation of the hadrons (hadronization processes) will wash out the majority of the information. We investigate identified hadron spectra, hadron-hadron correlations and the evolution of tagged jets in order to understand these processes. We require the increased statistics will be provided by the high-luminosity LHC, for our data analysis and our knowledge-basis will support the research and developments for the upgrades to have more preciuse measuremetns and high-speed data acquisition.

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

The high-luminosity LHC will start in 2020, which require strong R&D activity from any giant experimental collaboration of the CERN for the 2018-2020 period. Detector, data taking, and data acquisition (DAQ) techniques designed for the recent runs are not capable to handle the future's increased number of collisions. Giant experiments of the CERN need to be upgraded, such as the ALICE experiment, which were made uniquely for high-energy heavy-ion collisions, especially it has the largest-volume TPC of the world for this reason. Participating in the datector upgrades and R&D activities, we will have the right to analyse data during Run3 as well. Planned PbPb collisions led us to improve our knowledge on the hot and dense phase of the strongly interacting matter, the QGP, and even the properties of the early Universe. In pp and pPb collsions we can learn more about the cold nuclear and initial state effects, especially the fine structure of the nucleus, for which the ALICE was made.

The Hungarian ALICE Colalboration has been involved continously in detector R&D projects (DAQ, VHMPID), which made an exceptional lucky situation to take major and management role in the forthcoming detector upgrades. The present young and well-prepared group members (PhD, PostDoc) form a formula-one team for either theoretical and analysis works and for experimntal R&D. Leading researchers and engineers of the group can teach the state-of-the-art next generation for boosting up both the local and international scientific research groups and high-tech industries. As an impact of our researches, we can prepare and accumulate knowledge for the planned superlaser at ELI (Szeged, Hungary) or in HPC and Big Data solutions for the society.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

The aim of the Large Hadron Collider at the European Particle and Nuclear Physics Laboratory (CERN) is to answer the questions: what are the basic element of the matter and what was the matter of the early Universe shortly after the Big Bang? Since the LHC has been swiched on in 2009, we have already approached the answers: we have found the Higgs particle, which is responsible for generwting mass to the matter, in addition we have explored the basic properties of the hot, dense and color strongly interacting matter, the Quark-Gluon Plasma -- the matter of the early Universe. The CERN LHC is still working on to explore the elements of the microscopic world of the particles using giant detector facilities. Now the quastions are tested in high-energy proton-proton collisions: how supersimmetry and superstring theory is working, can we have extra dimensions? Certainly we continue our investigations of the QGP as well, in order to understand the early and today's Universe. This we can test in high-energy, ultrarelativistic nucleus-nucleus (heavy-ion) collisions.

This project investigate the QGP phase using the CERN LHC ALICE detector. Where we apply and develop state-of-the-art detectors and IT technologies. Our aim is to prepare the best detectors for the next Run3 of the LHC, which are capable to measure the increased particle production and measure data with higher statistics. By this way we can build up a more precise picture of the dense matter of the early Universe. Thanks to the many-years experience of R&D of the Hungarian ALICE Group, we can participate and even play a key role in the detector upgrades and data analysis.

Sikeresen elvégeztünk detektor K+F tevékenységeket, adatgyűjtést, adatelemzést és kapcsolódó elméleti kutatásokat. Kutatás fejlesztés során minőségbiztosítási-méréseket végeztünk, valamint megépítettük a világ legnagyobb, 90 m3-es, GEM-alapú időprojekciós kamráját (TPC). A Run-2 időszak alatt adatokat gyűjtöttünk a Nagy Impulzusú Részecskeazonosító Detektorral (HMPID). Elvégeztük a ALICE Belső Nyomkövető Rendszerét (ITS) alkotó szilícium-pixel (ALPIDE) szenzorok karakterizálását, amely technológiát javasoltuk proton-CT orvosi alkalmazásként. A nem-extenzív statisztikus megközelítés segítségével feltérképeztük a hadronizáció folyamatát. Fenomenologikus módszerekkel elemeztük a részecskezáporok belső szerkezetének multiplicitás-függését. Megírtuk a HIJING++ részecskefizikai Monte Carlo eseménygenerátort. Vizsgáltuk a hideg erősen kölcsönható anyagot kompakt csillagokban.
