magyar összefoglaló
A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

Tervezett kutatásaink analitikus folytatásai azon korábbi munkáinknak (OTKA K-73449, K-101490), amelyekben a társadalmi dilemmák hatását vizsgáltuk különböző körülmények mellett az evolúciós játékelmélet fogalmaival és eszközeivel. A statisztikus fizika módszereinek alkalmazásával most a numerikus vizsgálatainkat olyan új mechanizmusok és körülmények elemzésére terjesztenénk ki, amelyek szintén segítik a közösség számára előnyös magatartás kialakulását olyan esetekben, amikor az egyéni érdek követése az úgynevezett társadalmi tragédia állapotába hajtja a közösséget. Ezen cél érdekében kívánunk vizsgálni olyan modelleket, amelyek a valóságban is meglévő jelenségek hitelesebb számszerű elemzését teszik lehetővé, pl. kifinomultabb stratégiák használata, a nyeremények, körülmények és személyi tulajdonságok változása illetve változtatása, stb.). Ezzel párhuzamosan folytatnánk a nyereménymátrix összetevőkre bontásának segítségével kideríthető összefüggések felderítését.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?

Ide tartoznak a kétstratégiás társadalmi dilemma játékok is. A társadalmi dilemmák általános tulajdonságainak elemzését kívánjuk kiterjeszteni többstratégiás játékokra.

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

The present project is a straightforward continuation of our previous studies (OTKA K-73449, K-101490) focused on the systematic investigations of social dilemmas under different conditions within the framework of evolutionary games. Using the tools of statistical physics the numerical analysis will now be concentrated on the explanation of new mechanisms and conditions supporting the maintenance of cooperative behavior in a society when the individual rationality dictates the choice of selfish behavior resulting in the state called 'the tragedy of the community'. For this purpose we wish to study mathematical models by introducing complex strategies and other real phenomena related to the time variation of personality, payoffs, and other external conditions. Additionally we wish to explore the advantage of matrix decomposition when the interactions are built up as linear combinations of basis games representing four types of elementary interactions (games with self- and cross-dependent payoffs, coordination type interactions between the strategy pairs, and cyclic dominance represented by the rock-paper-scissors game). Among these interactions the elementary games with anti-symmetric payoff matrices represent the inequalities that are present both in the social dilemmas and cyclic dominance. In the light of the preliminary results this approach illustrates clearly the relationships between the phenomena and interactions distinguishing the thermodynamical and living systems.

The project will be performed by two senior researchers, a research assistant, and several students.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

Multi-agent evolutionary games provide a general mathematical background to study biological and social systems in the same ways as it is performed and applied successfully in solid state and statistical physics. In the last years we have developed a method to identify potential games (a subset of matrix games) that exhibits a thermodynamic behavior for a certain set of dynamical rules. This set of games involves social dilemmas which are considered previously for the two-strategy games. Now we wish to extend these investigations to clarify the presence of social dilemmas for a larger number of strategies. The present approach allows us to consider separately the results caused by the non-potential components (representing cyclic dominance) and also by the noises in the dynamical rules. Among these systems the ordinal potential games define models which show thermodynamic behavior at low noises while the main characteristics (absence of the Boltzmann distribution and detailed balance) of living systems occur at high noise levels. One of the main goal of our project is to determine the boundaries separating different behaviors both in the payoff parameters and noise level. Our efforts will be focused on models which includes different versions of social dilemmas. Besides the numerical investigations of these multi-agent systems we plan to develop methods for the quantification of the relevant features characterizing different behaviors.

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

In multi-agent biological and social systems the consequences of pair interactions and dynamical rules are not yet explored completely due to the large number of parameters if the agents have more than two strategies. The present investigations can help us simplify the quantitative investigations by identifying the interaction components that exhibit similar or completely different features in the stationary states. The systematic investigations of the composition of these interaction terms (elementary games) can give a general picture of the explanation of phenomena/relationships occurring in many living and non-living multi-agent systems. This method reduces the volume of the parameter space what we need to consider systematically if we wish to map the possible behaviors. The systematic investigations of the combinations of only a few basis games make the relationships clearly visible between the interactions and their consequences for different evolutionary rules. This approach can help the identification and quantification of elementary phenomena whose mixture occurs simultaneously in a specified model developed to study the maintenance and improvement of cooperative behavior in human or biological systems.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

The relevant differences between the living (biological or social) and non-living (thermodynamic) systems are well visible if these are composed of a large number of interacting small objects. The payoff matrix, a concept adopted from traditional game theory, involves quantitatively the distinction of interacting objects that are missing for particles in physical systems. More precisely, the symmetric and anti-symmetric parts of a payoff matrix describe interactions characteristic to particles and living objects. The latter components are responsible for appearance of social dilemmas and cyclic dominance in the biological and social systems. Now we wish to study the consequences of these interaction terms separately with hoping that the results give us a general picture that can be utilized for the explanation of phenomena in a wide scale of systems. This general approach helps us draw parallels between phenomena described in a wide scale of systems. In addition, the quantitative analysis of the different effects can be utilized to improve efficiency of a human society by enhancing the cooperative/altruistic behavior.

Ezen elemi játékok kombinációinak szisztematikus elemzése világosan mutatta a társadalmi dilemma helyzetek magas gyakoriságát. Kiderült továbbá, hogy társadalmi dilemma okozója lehet a magasabb entrópia, vagyis a nagyobb számú mikrószkopikus állapot. A ciklikus dominancia jelenléte a naív várakozásokkal ellentétes eredményre vezet, ami társadalmi dilemma helyzetet is okozhat. Az eredményeket 42 tudományos közleményben ismertettük.
kutatási eredmények (angolul)
Considering multi-agent evolutionary games we have studied different mechanisms that can help the society to avoid the social traps where the individual selfishness dictates a choice providing low average payoffs. It is found that the combinations of evolutionary rules, the introduction of memory, additional options (e.g. punishments, voluntary participation, or information transfer) and other personal features can support the maintenance of cooperative behavior at a level depending on the model that quantifies the possibilities, payoffs, connectivity structure and evolutionary processes. Six years ago we suggested the decomposition of payoff matrices into the linear combination of elementary games. Now, exploiting this approach we have shown that social dilemma can emerge in a large portion of the space of payoff parameters for the multi-strategy games, too. During the systematic investigations of the combinations of elementary games we have observed that the higher entropy (the larger number of microscopic states) and the paradoxical effect of cyclic dominance can also drive the system into a social trap. The results are published in 42 research papers.
