A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

Napjainkban a kvantummechanika törvényeinek engedelmeskedő atomok, fotonok viselkedését azok minden lényeges szabadsági fokában a kvantumos zaj által engedélyezett legpontosabb szinten kontrollálhatjuk. A rezgő nanodróton átfolyó áram keltette rádiófrekvenciás mágneses tér erősen csatolódik a kondenzátum atomjainak hiperfinom alnívói közötti átmenethez. A kölcsönhatás következtében átfordult spinű atomok, melyek kilépnek a csapdából, kísérleti atomszámlálási technikák révén összeszámolhatók.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?
Ebben a részben írja le röviden, hogy mi a kutatás segítségével megválaszolni kívánt probléma, mi a kutatás kiinduló hipotézise, milyen kérdéseket válaszolnak meg a kísérletek.

Az ultrahideg atomok és nanoméretű vezetők hibrid rendszerében a részrendszerek közötti erős magnetomechanikai csatolással milyen mértékben vihető át kvantumos információ a rendszer különböző részei között? Hogyan képeződik le az áram, illetőleg a kicsatoló tér zaja a Bose-Einstein kondenzátumból kilépő módusokra? Vezérelhető-e koherensen egyik szabadsági fok révén egy másik szabadsági fok egy ilyen hibrid rendszerben? Felépíthetünk-e ilyen kvantumosan jól kontrollálható hibrid rendszerekből nagyobb és összetettebb rendszereket, esetleg mérőeszközöket?

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

Atoms and photons can nowadays be manipulated and detected at the fundamental quantum noise level in all of their relevant degrees of freedom. It is plausible to extend this possibility to the quantum mechanical control of compound, hybrid systems as well. The prerequisite for this is the realization of a strong enough coupling among the subsytems that is externally controllable as well. We have previously started to study hybrid systems in which an ultracold spinor Bose-Einstein condensate is trapped in the magnetic filed of a so-called atomchip (a dielectric substrate with current-carrying wires integrated on it). We proposed to insert a nanowire, which is able to vibrate mechanically, into the electric circuit on the chip. The oscillating and current-carrying nanowire creates a radio-frequency magnetic field which couples to a transition between the hyperfine sublevels of the ultracold atoms. As a result of the interaction some atoms go through a spin-flip and leave the trap. They can be detected and counted by sensitive experimental atom-counting techniques. This hybrid system permits the mediation of quantum properties between degrees of freedom of completely different nature (such as spin and spatial location of atoms, the vibrational state of the wire, or its current). Our aim is to numerically and analytically investigate in detail the wavefunction of the outcoupled atoms leaving the trap and the information about the outcoupling field therein. We would also like to examine whether and how it is possible to control the quantum state of the different degrees of freedom with each other or with the quantum measurement itself.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

In the hybrid system composed of ultracold atoms and nanoscale conductors, to which extent is it possible to transfer quantum information from one subsytems to another? How is the current of the nanowire or the outcoupling magnetic field mapped onto the modes outcoupled from the Bose-Einstein condensate? Is it possible to coherently control one degree of freedom by another one in the hybrid system? Is it possible to use such quantum-mechanically well controllable hybrid systems as building blocks of larger and more complex systems, possibly measuring instruments?

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

The toolbox of quantum mechanical experiments and nanotechnology have undergone a huge development in the past few decades, bridging over many orders of magnitude in size and coherence time, and by now, reached a common border. Hybrid systems aiming at connecting the two technologies, however, require a sound theoretical basis. By identifying the relevant degrees of freedom on the basis of a microscopical theory, and the interactions among them, which determine the dynamical features of the coupled systems, we can ultimately gain insigth into the working principles and possible design of novel 'quantum machines'.

The creation of new quantum interfaces would lead to a significant progress in science, because they are suitable to combine the applicability of each of the strongly coupled components. For instance, the high-efficiency counting of atoms released from a Bose-Einstein condensate as a result of an interaction with the magnetic field of a vibrating nanowire, can be transferred to the accurate measurement of the mechanical vibrations or the measurement of the electric current itself. Hybrid interfaces based on magneto-mechanical coupling or other similar interactions, enable the controlled manipulation of one of the subsystems by performing a designed sequence of measurements on another part of the system.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

In the last two decades, we have witnessed a breathtaking evolution in quantum technology, that is, in the investigation, controlled manipulation and application of micro-world objects – such as atoms, molecules, photons, and localized electrons in a solid – obeying the laws of quantum mechanics. The objective is the construction of larger and larger systems from these units, which may ultimately lead to applications that can exploit the special possibilities of quantum mechanics. The aim of our theoretical research is to establish, on the basis of first principles of physics, simple models of certain compound, hybrid systems, which account for the operation of the strongly coupled quantum components. With the help of these models, we explore new effects occurring on the border of the microscopic quantum world and the classical macroscopic world. Effects in this domain, on the one hand, serve the interpretation of experimental observations, or lead to possibilities for novel experiments at our collaborating partners. On the other hand, new results in this domain can start off the elaboration of novel applications. Our work contributes to the penetration of quantum mechanics further into, e.g, metrology by inspiring the design of conceptually new measuring devices.

Nemlineáris protokollok zajtűrő képességét is vizsgáltuk. Közreműködtünk egy valószínűségi nemlineáris protokoll első, fotonikus elrendezésen alapuló kísérleti megvalósításában.
kutatási eredmények (angolul)
Hybrid quantum systems based on interacting quantum objects may have important applications if one can control the subsystems, the coupling, set the initial state, and measure parts of the output. Two of the major applications of such systems are quantum sensing and quantum information processing. In this project, for these purposes, we studied specific hybrid quantum systems as well as a more abstract description of probabilistic quantum evolution, where the physical realization of the constituents is not specified. We showed that in the hybrid system of an ultracold atomic cloud and a microwave resonator weak microwave fields at the single-photon level can be sensed by counting the atoms that fall out of the cloud after undergoing a transition from the trapped state into an untrapped one due to the interaction with the magnetic field of the resonator. We studied the system of two two-level atoms interacting with an optical cavity and showed that by probabilistic evolution (measuring parts of the system and keeping the remaining part only if a given result was obtained) a nonlinear transformation of the initial state occurs. Iterative application of this scheme can transform very similar states into orthogonal ones. We designed a protocol to decide if a quantum state is close enough to a reference state. We also analyzed the noise tolerance of nonlinear protocols. We collaborated on the first photonic experimental realization of a probabilistic nonlinear protocol.
