A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

Továbbá különböző típusú adalékanyagok hatását is vizsgálni fogjuk.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?
Ebben a részben írja le röviden, hogy mi a kutatás segítségével megválaszolni kívánt probléma, mi a kutatás kiinduló hipotézise, milyen kérdéseket válaszolnak meg a kísérletek.

Szilárd felületekkel határolt geometriákban az anizotrop lágy anyagok legegyszerűbb típusai, a nematikus folyadékkristályok, jól megalapozott tudományos háttérrel rendelkeznek, ami által ezek az anyagok már nagy hatást értek el, mivel a lapos kijelzők alapjául szolgálnak. Nemrég a tudományos érdeklődés olyan irányba fordult, ahol a nematikusok topológikus defektek keltését lehetővé tevő tulajdonságát helyezik fókuszba, mely objektumok így könnyebben megfigyelhetők, mint a kozmológiában vagy a részecskefizikában. Ezen anyagok lágy és anizotrop természete lehetővé teszi a topológiai objektumok elektromos, mágneses mezőkkel, vagy fénnyel való befolyásolását. A határfeltételek kritikus szerepet játszanak a defektek képződésében. Miként hat a felületi direktor a topológiára?

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

A topológiai defektek általános elvek következményei a természetben. A pályázatunk célja a topológia vizsgálata anizotrop lágy anyagokban, amik nemcsak a defektek megfigyelésében kínálnak nagy lehetőségeket, hanem azok külső mezőkkel vagy határfeltételekkel történő vezérlésével kapcsolatban is. A topológiai defektek univerzalitása miatt tehát az előre látott eredményeink más, szingularitásokkal foglalkozó területek, pl. kvantum-térelmélet, kozmológia, szilárdtestfizika részéről is általános érdeklődésre tarthatnak igényt.

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

A topológiai defektek helyi szingularitások a rendezettségben, melyek speciális határfeltételek okán jönnek létre. Univerzálisak a természetben, sok területen (pl. kozmológia, nanofizika, részecskefizika) játszanak kiemelt szerepet. Habár eredetük geometriai, különálló objektumoknak tekinthetők, mert a magjukban a rendszer tulajdonságai minőségileg különböznek a környezethez képest. A defektek beindíthatnak fázisátalakulásokat, vonzhatják/taszíthatják egymást, csapdázhatnak idegen objektumokat.
Summary
Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

The proposed research targets the comprehensive exploration and understanding of phenomena related to the topology of anisotropic soft matter interfacing other fluid media including gases and liquids. Using the simplest model system, nematic liquid crystals, we aim to experimentally determine the interfacial orientation of the local symmetry axis, the director. The first major intention of the project is to create a novel type of automatized microscopic imaging system that maps the orientation and the magnitude of optical anisotropy on a surface, by polarization dependent reflectivity measurements. Applying this planned, unique, custom-made system, we aim to deduce the interfacial director orientation and reveal the main factors that determine it. Systematic measurements will be performed on a number of liquid crystals, varying the molecular structure to reveal the key material properties that influence the interfacial alignment. Additionally, the effect of different types of dopants will be studied. We aim to gather comprehensive knowledge to make important conclusions that ensure to keep the interfacial director orientation under control. The second main goal of the proposed research is to explore and understand the topological properties, possible orientational defects on the surface of the liquid crystal and their dependence on the interfacial director alignment. The third major aim is to control the topology of liquid crystals interfacing other fluids by external electric/magnetic fields, and to understand the interactions that are characteristic only to the systems with non-solid boundaries, including the phenomena related to static and dynamic director distortions.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

The scientific background of the simplest form of fluidic anisotropic soft matter, namely nematic liquid crystals, is well established in geometries with solid confining surfaces, whereby nematics are already achieved high impact as being the basis of flat displays. Recently, the scientific interest has turned to directions where the focus is in their ability to form topological defects, which can be observed more easily than in other fields like cosmology or quantum physics. Additionally, their soft and anisotropic nature offers the ability of controlling the topological objects by external electric, magnetic fields or light. The boundary conditions play a crucial role in the formation of defects. The properties of liquid crystals interfacing non-solid media is much less known than those contacting solids, in spite of the higher degree of freedom that promises many points of interest. However, there are some emerging applications using nematic interfaces with other fluids, though only a very few compounds are utilized so far, and the underlying mechanisms governing the interfacial alignment are mostly unknown. Our research aims to answer the following crucial questions by experimental investigations. How the director is oriented at interfaces with other fluids? What are the key factors and relevant material parameters and how do they influence the director at fluid surfaces? How does the interfacial director affect the topology? Where the topological defects are localized and what director fields are realized around them? How can one create topological defects with desired properties? How can we control the topology by external stimuli and how can this be exploited?

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

Topological defects are consequences of general principles in nature; they appear when an order parameter of a system cannot vary continuously in space due to geometrical restrictions. The defect cores are singularities, where the properties of the system are qualitatively different than elsewhere. Our proposed research aims to investigate topology in anisotropic soft materials that offer great opportunities not only in observation of defects but also in controlling them in various ways, by boundary conditions or external fields. Therefore, due to the universality of topological defects, our foreseen results are expected to attract general interest from other fields, where singularities are important, e.g. in quantum field theory, cosmology, and condensed matter physics.

Our targeted measurements of the liquid crystal alignment at interfaces with other fluids and understanding the key parameters influencing this material property is expected to expose a significant impact on the emerging topic of anisotropic soft matter with soft boundaries, because the literature lacks comprehensive experimental studies that provide reference data for various liquid crystals. The new microscopy technique to be established for quantitative imaging of the interfacial orientation will be a unique innovation. The value of the resulting instrument will reach out beyond the goals of this proposal by providing a cutting-edge apparatus for future research purposes as well.

Our foreseen results may lead to new ideas, and will expectedly move forward those novel applications, where liquid crystals are interfacing other fluids or topological defects are present. These include the chemical/biosensing using the director reorientation at interfaces with water; the control of defect trapped particles/macromolecules via actuation by external fields; or in microfluidic/lab-on-a-chip devices involving anisotropic soft matter.

The participants of the proposed project are members of the only Hungarian group involved in experimental research on liquid crystals. We believe that, based on our experience, unique experimentation, and established know-how, we will successfully compete with foreign groups in the field of the present proposal.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

Topological defects are local singularities in order due to special boundary conditions in a system. They are universal in nature, being important in many fields including cosmology, nanophysics, materials science, and particle physics. However their origin is geometrical, they can be considered as individual objects, since the properties of the system in the defect core are substantially different than elsewhere. They can trigger phase transitions, attract/repulse each other, and trap foreign objects. Besides their scientific interest, topological defects are important in applications: somewhere they are unwanted, e.g. in liquid crystal displays; elsewhere an application is based on them, e.g. in hardening of metals, or recently, in new approaches: in use of crystal vacancies for new types of light sources, biological imaging, or in spintronics. Our proposed project envisages one step further, aiming the creation of topological defects on demand by controlling the boundary conditions, and manipulating them in real-time by external electric/magnetic fields. We will study them in liquid crystals that offer plausible observability and high sensitivity to external stimuli. In order to keep the boundary conditions under control, we need to understand the key parameters influencing them. For that, we intend to develop a unique microscopy technique to measure the liquid crystal orientation at interfaces with other fluids. Then, using defects of known topology, we will investigate their control by electric/magnetic fields that we expect to be exploited in applications such as guided material transport, chemical/biosensing, and in microfluidic/lab-on-a-chip devices.

By this project, a cutting edge experimental and theoretical framework could be established, which lead to the following highlighted, practically applicable results related to the basic research of the interfacial topology of anisotropic soft matter. We revealed that the interfacial molecular orientation at liquid crystal - air interfaces in most materials is normal to the surface, but in some cases, with special molecular structure, it can be parallel too, e.g. in case of a dimeric molecule. We showed that the orientational structure in droplets depends on the boundary conditions, and it can be tuned by light in a photosensitive dimer. We discovered in the same dimer, that the visco-elastic properties can also be tuned by light. We proved that a reversible and fast change in viscosity by light illumination is possible with a remarkable contrast of one to a million, which paves the way to new advanced materials offering applications as photoswitchable brakes or adhesives. In another liquid crystal, we showed that an electrically switchable/tunable and highly efficient generation of optical vortices is possible using a self-assembled pattern of topological defects, offering applications in super-resolution microscopy, in laser tweezers, or in optical communication. We presented a new application of electroconvective flow vortices in microfluidic mixing as well as a new generation mechanism of stable, high-energy orientational patterns through self-arraying topological defects.
