magyar összefoglaló
A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

A kutatás célja a légköri nagyskálájú terjedési folyamatok tanulmányozása a dinamikai rendszerek szemléletében valósághű meteorológiai adatok felhasználásával. Mivel korábbi vizsgálataink kimutatták, hogy a szétterjedés sajátosságai évszakos függéssel rendelkeznek, ami a tipikusan eltérő jellegzetességekkel rendelkező légköri áramlási viszonyoknak köszönhető, feltételezhető, hogy változó éghajlat mellett is módosulnak ezen tulajdonságok. Korábbi kutatásaink feltárták, hogy a különböző káosz-mérőszámok terjedésszámításba való átültetése egy általánosabb, átfogóbb képet nyújt a terjedésről. A folyamat jellemzésére jelen vizsgálatban az ún. topologikus entrópiát (mely a szennyeződésfelhők nyúlásának mértékét írja le), valamint az ún. szökési rátát (mely a kiülepedés ütemét számszerűsíti) tervezzük használni. Ekkor minden terjedési eseményhez egy-egy mérőszámot tudunk hozzárendelni, így vizsgálataink alkalmasak lesznek nagy számú numerikusan szimulált terjedési folyamat statisztikai analízisére. A modellszimulációk új ismeretekkel szolgálhatnak arról, hogy jövőbeli vulkánkitörések hamufelhői vagy ipari balesetek során kikerülő szennyezőanyagok terjedésének előrejelezhetőségében és más sajátosságaiban milyen mértékű változás várható.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?

A cél ezen különbségek felderítése, elemzése.

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

Poll., 147(3), 438–445; Kinney, 2008, Am. J. Prev. Med., 35(5), 459–467; Jacob et al., 2009, Atmos. Env., 43(1), 51–63; Fang et al., 2011, J. Geophys. Res.: Atmos., 116, D18303), és nem a terjedést magát. A kutatás ezért a nagyskálájú terjedési jellemzők (pl. intenzitás, előrejelezhetőség) a változó éghajlat függvényében való lehetséges módosulásainak felmérését tűzte ki célul.

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

A nagyobb vulkánikitörések hamufelhői akár a légiközlekedést is veszélyeztethetik (pl. Eyjafjallajökull, 2010), az ipari balesetekből kikerülő anyagok forrásuktól messze is kockázatot jelenthetnek (pl. Fukushima, 2011). A projekt célja idősoraik elemzése változó éghajlat mellett.
angol összefoglaló
Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

There are numerous open questions about possible consequences of climate change, which are not clarified satisfactorily for the time being. To our knowledge, one of the scopes that has not come into the focus of interest yet is the impact of climate change on dispersion of pollutants (gases, aerosol particles) in the atmosphere. The aim of the research is the investigation of large-scale atmospheric dispersion processes from a dynamical systems approach using realistic meteorological data. Our previous research has shown that the nature of the dispersion depends on the season what proved to be the consequence of the different atmospheric circulation characteristics of the particular seasons. Therefore, it is presumable that the properties of dispersion also alter during a changing climate. Our previous studies revealed that the application of different measures of chaos in dispersion calculation provides a general and comprehensive overview of the dispersion. In this study we are going to apply the so-called topological entropy, describing the stretching rate of pollutant clouds, and escape rate, characterizing the rate of deposition. In this manner, simple quantities are assigned to each dispersion event, hence these investigations are suitable for the statistical analysis of a large number of numerically simulated dispersion events. Model simulations can provide new insights about the change in the predictability and further properties of the dispersion of ash plumes from future volcanic eruptions and of pollutants released during industrial accidents.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

The aim of the research is to uncover the question, not studied in detail for the time being, how a changing climate influences the dispersion of pollutants on continental and global scale. Due to the fact presented in our previous work that the characteristics of the dispersion (e.g. its speed and predictability, or the structure of the pollutant cloud) show seasonal dependence owing to the different atmospheric circulation patterns, it can be assumed that a changing climate is also associated with variant mean values of these properties. The research focuses on the exploration and analysis of these differences. The research is intended to reveal whether the observable (e.g. temperature) trends affect the large-scale dispersion detectably. We also plan to study the change in the characteristics of the dispersion in meteorological fields representing significantly different climate states produced by a climate model of intermediate complexity. Model simulations can answer the question how the predictability and further properties of the dispersion of ash plumes from future volcanic eruptions and of pollutants released during anthropogenic industrial accidents change.

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

Gases and aerosol particles released high in the atmosphere due to volcanic eruptions or industrial accidents may have an effect in regions far from their emission source, hence the simulation of continental and global scale dispersion processes is important from environmental aspects. Although, studies dealing with the connection between climate change and air quality are prepared in recent years, these are mainly restricted to regional to local scales or evaluate the changes in pollutant concentration (Bytnerowicz et al., 2007 , Env. Poll., 147(3), 438–445; Kinney, 2008, Am. J. Prev. Med., 35(5), 459–467; Jacob et al., 2009, Atmos. Env., 43(1), 51–63; Fang et al., 2011, J. Geophys. Res.: Atmos., 116, D18303), not in the dispersion itself. Therefore, the purpose of the research is a detailed analysis of the possible changes in the characteristics of large-scale dispersion depending on the climate state. A part of the work is going to be based on the meteorological reanalysis data of past decades: this reveals whether the observable (e.g. temperature) trends affect the large-scale dispersion detectably. We also plan to study the change in the characteristics of the dispersion in meteorological fields representing significantly different climate states produced by a climate model of intermediate complexity. We describe the dispersion by two quantities well-known in the theory of chaotic systems, i.e. by the so-called topological entropy quantifying the stretching of pollutant clouds in the atmosphere, and by the so-called escape rate characterizing the rate of deposition. To our knowledge, these quantities have not been applied in atmospheric context except our previous studies. Since in this way each dispersion event is characterized by simple quantities, these investigations are suitable for the statistical analysis of a large number of numerically simulated dispersion events on local and global scale. The research, therefore, contributes to the exploration of the question how the properties of large-scale dispersion processes change during a changing climate.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

One of the most studied environmental issues is climate change and its possible consequences. Ash clouds of volcanic eruptions may mean danger for air travel (e.g. Eyjafjallajökull, 2010), while materials emitted from industrial accidents may result in risk far away from their source (e.g. Fukushima, 2011). The project focuses on a topic that has not drawn attention for the time being, namely, on the dispersion of pollutant particles on continental and global scale which is important from the point of view of the above mentioned events. The project intends to answer the question how the intensity of the dispersion processes (i.e., the speed or predictability of the spreading) or the characteristic structures of the pollutant clouds are altered by a changing climate. Our previous research has shown that the nature of the dispersion depends on the season what proved to be the consequence of the different atmospheric circulation in the particular seasons. Therefore, it is presumable that the properties of dispersion also alter during a changing climate. We characterize the dispersion processes by means of two physical quantities well-known in the theory of chaotic systems and applied also in our previous studies in the atmospheric context. One of them describes the stretching rate of pollutant clouds, the other quantifies the rate of their deposition. The aim of the project is the analysis of their time series during the climate change.

kutatási eredmények (magyarul)
A kutatás során az éghajlatváltozás légköri szennyeződések terjedésére gyakorolt hatását vizsgáltuk. A terjedés intenzitását az ún. nyúlási ütemmel (topologikus entrópia) jellemeztük, mely a szennyeződésfelhők hosszának exponenciális ütemű növekedését számszerűsíti. A nyúlási ütem mind a reanalízis mezőkben, mind a PlaSim és a CESM éghajlati modellek sokasági éghajlati szimulációiban zajló terjedés esetén jelentős változást mutat emelkedő globális átlaghőmérséklet mellett. Különböző földrajzi övekben az átlagos nyúlási ütem és a relatív örvényesség szoros kapcsolatban áll. Ennek segítségével a terjedésben bekövetkező változások becsülhetők számításigényes terjedési szimulációk nélkül is.
In this project, the effect of climate change on atmospheric pollutant spreading was studied. The intensity of the spreading was characterized by the stretching rate (topological entropy) which quantifies the exponential growth of the length of pollutant clouds. The stretching rate shows a considerable change either using reanalysis fields or the ensemble climate simulations of the PlaSim and CESM climate models. Its mean value is found to be closely related to relative vorticity in different geographical belts. This relationship could help estimate the changes in the spreading without the necessity to carry out computationally costly extra spreading simulations. The RePLaT model, utilized for the spreading simulations, has been improved for more accurate numerics, and its RePLaT-Chaos and RePLaT-Chaos-edu versions have been created for educational purposes as well. By means of the latter two the chaotic nature of spreading can be easily demonstrated, too. We found that the number of non-deposited aerosol particles decreases exponentially during spreading. The escape rate characterizing the rapidity of the decay increases quadratically with the particle size and it does not depend on the altitude of the release. This implies the existence of a global chaotic saddle. The geographical distribution of the particle lifetimes has a filamentary, fractal structure, the particles emitted close to the Equator remain in the atmosphere for the longest time.
