A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

A kutatás fő célja elektron optikai építőelemek létrehozása. A szórási mechanizmusok azonosításához szupravezető alagút spektroszkópiát fogunk használni, ami lehetővé teszi a szórási folyamatoktól erősen függő, nem-egyensúlyi eloszlásfüggvény meghatározását. További információ szerezhető grafén p-n átmenetekben létrejövő kvantum Hall élállapotok egymás közti szórását vizsgálva. Nagy tisztaságú mintákban völgy és spin-polarizált élállapotok szórása is tanulmányozható.
A mintakészítási módszerek optimalizálása után lokális kapuelektródákkal hangolható elektron-optikai szerkezeteket fogunk vizsgálni, mint például a kvantum pont kontaktust, vagy élállapot interferométert. Ezekben a szerkezetekben a töltés és spin transzport is tanulmányozható, és ezen kutatások a grafén p-n átmenetek mélyebb megértését teszik majd lehetővé.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?

Bár a grafén felfedezését követő években sok új ballisztikus jelenséget megjósoltak, ezek kísérleti detektálását a minták gyenge minősége meggátolta. A mintakészítésben történt újításoknak köszönhetően mára már lehetségessé vált ezen jóslatok tanulmányozása, például negatív törésmutatójú határátmenetek létrehozása.
A kutatás során különböző típusú elektron transzport folyamatokat fogunk vizsgálni (ballisztikus, diffúzív vagy hidrodinamikai tartomány). A különböző szórási hosszakat szupravezető alagút spektroszkópiával és kvantum Hall élállapotok szóródásával fogjuk meghatározni.
Különböző mintakészítési eljárásokat megvizsgálva (például a grafént felfüggesztve, vagy bór nitrid kristályok közé zárva) arra is keresni fogjuk a választ, hogy a minta-fabrikáció hogyan befolyásolja ezen hosszskálákat. A létrehozott elektron optikai elemek (pl. kvantum pont kontaktusok, vagy interferométerek) nagymértékben elő fogják segíteni a grafénban zajló töltés és spin transzport folyamatok megértését.

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

Ezért a grafén alapú elektron-optikai szerkezetek megvalósításának elengedhetetlen feltétele a bennük lévő szórási mechanizmusok feltérképezése, amihez a jelen pályázat jelentősen hozzájárulna. Továbbá, mivel a mintakészítés jelentős behatással van a minta minőségére, különböző, egymást kiegészítő mintakészítési eljárások vizsgálatára van szükség. A jelen kutatócsoport egyike azon kevés kutatócsoportnak a világon, melyeknek mind felfüggesztett, mind bór nitridbe csomagolt grafén szerkezetek előállításában is van tapasztalata.

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

Low dimensional materials offer better performance and new functionalities for electronic devices. Graphene, a single layer of graphite is transparent, has high electron mobility, and offers the formation of gapless p-n interfaces. These properties allow us to construct novel electron-optical devices, where the electron movement is ballistic, and their trajectories are modified using electric and magnetic fields.
This projects aims to construct basic building blocks of such devices. To do so, relevant scattering processes in graphene and the influence of sample preparation on them have to be identified. To access these parameters we will use superconducting tunneling spectroscopy, which allows the extraction of non-equilibrium distribution function containing important information on the density dependent scattering mechanism. These mechanisms can also be probed by investigating the equilibration of quantum Hall edge states along p-n junctions, where also scattering of valley and spin polarized edge states can be studied.
Using local electrostatic gates and optimized fabrication methods, we will realize some of the key elements for electron optics, like quantum point contact or edge state interferometers, where ballistic electron and spin transport can be studied. Moreover, we expect that such studies will deepen our understanding of graphene p-n junctions.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

The central question of this proposal is how electron charge and spin transport is modified in low dimensional nanostructures. It is known since the discovery of graphene, that novel phenomena is expected in ballistic graphene devices, however limitations of sample quality were a main obstacle for the observation of these effects. Recent advances in sample fabrication now allow us to enter to this regime, where conceptually new devices, like lenses based on negative refraction can be fabricated.
In this project we plan to address the different transport regimes by accessing the interaction length scales using superconducting tunneling spectroscopy and by investigating edge state transport in locally gated devices. These length scales are strongly gate dependent in graphene and the transport can be ballistic, diffusive or even governed by hydrodynamics equations.
We will also try to answer the question how sample preparation affects these regimes by investigating different fabrication methods like suspending or encapsulating the graphene. The realized electron optical elements (like QPCs, interferometers) will deepen our understanding in electron and spin transport in graphene based devices.

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

Graphene and other low dimensional materials can offer not only better performance (mobility, heat conductivity etc.), but can bring new functionalities to future electronic devices. The understanding of transport phenomena, the relevant interactions and their control is of utmost importance for any future electronic device built on these materials. The outlined proposal would contribute to this understanding significantly. Also, the fabrication protocols strongly influence the device operation; therefore complementary studies between different device production methods are needed. The research group of the present proposal is one of the few groups, who have experience in different methods for fabricating high mobility devices: suspended and encapsulated devices.
The electron optical elements fabricated during this project can be the basic building blocks for future electronic devices. Moreover, these also promise a good platform for ballistic heat and spin transport. In graphene non-conventional heat transport mechanisms can exist, and the low spin orbit coupling and absence of nuclear spins also guarantees long spin lifetime. Finally coupling graphene to superconductors in the Quantum Hall regime can result in novel topological excitations, Majorana and parafermions, which can be among the future building block of quantum computers.
The field of low-dimensional electronics is immensely growing and very competitive. Throughout the word hundreds of research groups work on graphene, and the EU council also acknowledged the importance of graphene research by forming the graphene Flagship project. Moreover, the investment of companies like Intel, Microsoft etc. to the field of topological computation also highlights the potential of the field. The expertise, the previous results of the research group and the proper selection of the research goal guarantees the success and high impact of the project. We have excellent collaboration with national research groups working on graphene (MFA, Eötvös Uni.), who conduct complementary studies on these systems.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

The goal of the present proposal is to construct electronic devices based on novel physical phenomena. Nowadays, the electronics is mostly silicon based, however the scaling and improvement of present devices becomes more and more challenging. Therefore new material platforms are developed, which can replace or complement present technologies. Most promising candidates are low dimensional materials, nanosheets or nanowires. At these small dimensions the electronic transport is governed by the laws of quantum mechanics and new, surprising phenomena occur.
Graphene, a single atom thick graphite, is one of the most promising materials. It is an exceptionally good conductor, and electrons can travel within graphene unperturbed without scattering (ballistic motion). The electronic trajectories can locally be modified with electric and magnetic fields, and mirrors, lenses for the electrons can be constructed: this field is termed electron-optics. Within this proposal we will realize basic electron-optics elements, and unravel the new, exciting physical mechanisms behind. Moreover, in graphene devices not only the charge of the electron, but also its internal magnetic moment, the spin, could be used for information storage. The field of spin-based electronics is called spintronics, and graphene has already shown superior performance over present technologies. Finally, we will also investigate induced superconducting correlations in graphene, which can result in special excitation, which can be the basic building blocks of quantum computation.

kutatási eredmények (magyarul)
A projekt nagy mobilitású grafén heterostruktúrák fejlesztését célozta meg. Míg korábbi tanulmányainkban felfüggesztett grafénre összpontosítottunk, itt a fő hangsúlyt a más 2D anyagok közé szendvicselt grafénre helyeztük. Ezek a tanulmányok több kutatóintézettel együttműködésben készültek. Rev. Lett., Nature Nanoelectronics és több Nano Letters cikk is található.
kutatási eredmények (angolul)

This technique allows versatile device architectures and the modification of the properties of graphene on the atomic level using proximity effects. The project was successful in different research directs: i) Study of ballistic transport and fabrication of electron-optical elements, ii) injecting spin currents into graphene, and modification of its band structure to engineer spin orbit interaction and iii) development of a platform that can be used to strain van der Waals heterostructures, which was tested on graphene samples. Besides graphene, other 2D materials were studied, like WSe2, BiTeBr which we used for spintronics applications or MoS2, where we demonstrated for the first time the formation of a ferromagnetic order. These studies were done in collaboration with several research Institutes. The project resulted in 4 BSc and 3 MSc thesis and 3 two theses for the Hungarian Scientific Students' Associations competition (TDK). The results have resulted in the publication (or acceptance) of 20 research papers in leading journals, including a Phys. Rev. Lett., a Nature Nanotechnology and several Nano Letters papers.
