A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

Sztochasztikus modellek vizsgálatával próbáljuk megérteni a statisztikus fizika és a valószínűségszámítás jelenségeit, ezért a Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) univerzalitási osztályba tartozó egzaktul megoldható modellekkel foglalkozunk. Kölcsönható részecskerendszerek, irányított polimerek, egymást nem metsző trajektóriák fluktuációinak határértékével és véletlenmátrix-modellek valószínűségi reprezentációját tervezzük vizsgálni nemzetközi együttműködésben. Ezek a modellek a Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) egyenlethez kapcsolódnak, amely természetes felületnövekedési folyamatok széles körét írja le. A kapott határértékként adódó statisztikák a véletlen mátrixok elméletéből is ismertek.

Mivel a KPZ-egyenlet matematikailag nem jól definiált, a felületnövekedés leírására különböző matematikai modelleket állítunk fel. A KPZ univerzalitási sejtés szerint ezek a modellek ugyanazokat a skálázási és aszimptotikus tulajdonságokat mutatják. Mivel a sejtés általános bizonyítása egyelőre reménytelennek tűnik, a KPZ-egyenlethez kötődő konkrét modellek aszimptotikus vizsgálatát tervezzük.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?
Ebben a részben írja le röviden, hogy mi a kutatás segítségével megválaszolni kívánt probléma, mi a kutatás kiinduló hipotézise, milyen kérdéseket válaszolnak meg a kísérletek.

Sztochasztikus modellek vizsgálatával próbáljuk megérteni a statisztikus fizika és a valószínűségszámítás jelenségeit, ezért a Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) univerzalitási osztályba tartozó egzaktul megoldható modellekkel foglalkozunk. Ezek a modellek a Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) egyenlethez kapcsolódnak, amely természetes felületnövekedési folyamatok széles körét írja le, mint például a kristályok lapjainak növekedése, a szilárdulási frontok, egy papírlap nedvességel átjárt vagy égett részének fejlődése. A kutatási terület legfőbb nyitott kérdése a KPZ univerzalitási sejtés.

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

A tervezett kutatásban a Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) univerzalitási osztályba tartozó egzaktul megoldható modellekkel foglalkozunk.

A kutatás során elvégzett vizsgálatok igazolják a felületnövekedés fizikai modelljeinek széles körének alkalmazhatóságát. A matematikai elmélet által adott előrejelzéseket nemrég bizonyos kristályok növekedésénél kísérletileg igazolták. Jelen pályázat erőssége a KPZ univerzalitási osztályba tartozó modellek széles skálájának vizsgálata, amelyet a korábbi munkák során is használt analitikus készségek alkalmazásával hajtunk végre.

Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

We try to understand phenomena in statistical physics and probability theory via stochastic modelling, in particular by studying exactly solvable models in the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class. I propose to investigate the limiting fluctuations of interacting particle system models, directed polymers, non-intersecting trajectories and the probabilistic representation of scaling limits of random matrix models in collaboration with international collegues. All these models are directly related to the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation which is believed and partially proved to describe a wide class of surface growth phenomena. The limiting statistics are also known from random matrix theory.

Since the KPZ equation is a priori not well-defined mathematically, one studies various mathematical models for surface growth which imitate this behaviour. By the KPZ universality conjecture, these models show the same universal scaling and asymptotic properties. Since a universal approach to the conjecture seems inaccessible, we propose to investigate the asymptotics of concrete models related to the KPZ equation. We study a certain directed polymer model because its free energy gives a representation for the solution of the KPZ equation. Interacting particle system and non-intersecting trajectories are related to surface growth models via certain bijections. We expect to prove our results as limit theorems for the models above which can be published in the leading journals of probability theory and can be presented on conferences. An international attention to these results is expected as it can be seen in terms of citations of our previous papers in the field.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

We try to understand phenomena in statistical physics and probability theory via stochastic modelling, in particular by studying exactly solvable models in the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class. All these models are directly related to the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation which is believed and partially proved to describe a wide class of surface growth phenomena appearing naturally e.g. crystal and facet growth, boundaries, solidification fronts, paper wetting or burning fronts. The most important open question of the field is the KPZ universality conjecture. According to the conjecture, a wide class of models that mimic the behaviour prescribed by the KPZ equation show the same universal scaling and asymptotic properties. The family of models which are proved to possess the above asymptotic properties is called the KPZ universality class. The universality conjecture in general is widely open. With the most recent and involved techniques, one can only prove KPZ universality for certain very particular types of models. The present understanding is far from a universal proof of limit theorems for the whole class of models which is believed to belong to the KPZ universality class. Since a universal approach seems inaccessible at the moment, we try to enlarge our knowledge on the KPZ universality class by proving limit theorems for concrete models.

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

The general motivation of my research is the urge of understanding phenomena in statistical physics and probability theory via stochastic modelling. The main focus of the proposed research is on the study of exactly solvable models in the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class. The models considered in the proposed research are directly related to the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation which appeared first in the physics literature as a stochastic evolution equation. The equation is believed and partially proved to describe a wide class of surface growth phenomena appearing naturally e.g. crystal growth, facet boundaries, solidification fronts, paper wetting or burning fronts. To access the solution of the KPZ equation, one can examine various mathematical models for surface growth which imitate this behaviour usually by discrete approximation. By a simple bijection, they can often be defined equivalently as interacting particle systems, which gives the relevance of the study of such particle systems.

According to the KPZ universality conjecture, a wide class of models that mimic the behaviour prescribed by the KPZ equation show the same universal scaling and asymptotic properties. The conjecture in general is widely open, but an affirmative answer would provide asymptotics for a rich class of mathematical models for the physical phenomenon of surface growth. The present understanding is far from a universal proof of limit theorems for the whole class of models which is believed to belong to the KPZ universality class. Hence to enlarge our knowledge on the KPZ universality class, one investigates the asymptotics of certain very particular types of models. I propose to understand the limiting fluctuations of such models.

This is a basic research area which has a long term social benefit. The analyses carried out in this research validate the physics models used for a large family of surface growth phenomena. The predictions of the mathematical theory have been verified by recent measurements on the fluctuations of crystal growth. The strength of the present proposal is that we cover a wide spectrum of models within the KPZ universality class based on our analytic competence shown by previous works.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

The general motivation of my research is the urge of understanding of phenomena in statistical physics and in probability theory via stochastic modelling. The main focus of the proposed research is on the study of mathematical models in the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class which is related to the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation. The equation which appeared first in the physics literature is believed and partially proved to describe a wide class of surface growth phenomena appearing naturally e.g. crystal growth, facet boundaries, solidification fronts, paper wetting or burning fronts. To access the solution of the KPZ equation, one uses less direct ways: various mathematical models for surface growth are studied which imitate this behaviour. The predictions of the mathematical theory based on the study of the KPZ equation and universality class have been verified by recent measurements on crystal growth.

The most important open question of the field is the universality conjecture. According to the conjecture, a wide class of models that mimic the behaviour prescribed by the KPZ equation show the same universal scaling properties. The universality conjecture in general is widely open. The present understanding is far from a general proof of limit theorems for the whole class of models which is believed to have the same long term behaviour. Hence we enlarge our knowledge on the KPZ universality class by proving limit theorems for certain concrete models using the most recent techniques.

A határfolyamat a Brown-mozgásokból kapott hard-edge tacnode folyamat legfelső görbéje. Ennek segítségével megadjuk a KPZ osztályba tartozó modellek határeloszlásának faroklecsengését.
kutatási eredmények (angolul)
With Zsofia Talyigas (BME, Bath), we consider the O'Connell-Yor semi-discrete directed polymer with boundary sources and the continuum directed random polymer with the new (m,n)-spiked boundary perturbations which generalizes the m-spiked boundary condition. We prove that the limiting fluctuations of the free energies in both polymer models converge to the Borodin-Peche type deformations of the GUE Tracy-Widom distribution. With Patrik Ferrari (Bonn), we consider uniform random domino tilings of the domain obtained by cutting off an upper triangular part of the Aztec diamond by a horizontal line. The line is chosen so that it has a non-trivial interaction with the boundary of the north polar region on its fluctuation scale. We prove that the rescaled boundary converges to the Airy(2) process conditioned to stay below a parabola as the size of the domain tends to infinity. The limit is the top line of the hard-edge tacnode process for Brownian motion. With Patrik Ferrari, we consider the limiting distribution of KPZ growth models with random but not stationary initial conditions. The one-point distribution of the limit is given in terms of a variational problem involving a Brownian motion and an independent Airy(2) process minus a parabola. We determine the right tail decay for the distribution of the supremum of the Airy(2) process minus a parabola with arbitrary coefficient. We deduce the right tail asymptotic of the limiting distribution function of KPZ class models.
