magyar összefoglaló
A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

A projekt kisebb részben kiterjed rugalmas deformációkra képes rendszerek analízisére is. Ezeknél a súrlódás hatására bekövetkező speciális rugalmas stabilitásvesztési formák megértése és elkerülése áll a vizsgálatok középpontjában.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?

Emellett karcsú, rugalmas, növekedő szálak esetén keressük azokat a kialakítási módokat, amelyek mellett a szál végpontjai a lehető legtávolabbra tudnak eljutni egymástól a súrlódást legyőzve.

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

A kutatás során elsősorban elméleti mechanikai eredmények mérnöki, és kisebb részben biológiai alkalmazási lehetőségeit vizsgáljuk, illetve a gyakorlati alkalmazások számára hasznos stabilitási kritériumokat állítunk elő.

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

A kutatási projekt célja a váratlan stabilitásvesztések megértése, leírása, bekövetkeztének megjósolása, illetve olyan tervezési módszerek kidolgozása, melyekkel elkerülhetőek. A stabilitásvesztés központi kérdés a földrengésvédelem és a robotika területén is. A mérnöki kérdések mellett mellett kisebb részben biológiai rendszerek hasonló problémájával is foglalkozunk: azt vizsgáljuk, hogy a karcsú, hajlékony gyökerekkel rendelkező növények hogyan alkalmazkodtak a mechanika törvényeihez, hogy ezáltal a velük érintkező közeg ellenállását legyőzve hatékonyan érjenek el távoli erőforrásokat.

Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

We propose to examine the dynamics and the stability of mechanical systems with unilateral contacts and friction. Simple models of contact interaction give rise to piecewise smooth, hybrid dynamical systems. Our goal is to better understand the behavior of these systems, and to apply this knowledge to biological and engineering problems. The majority of the research concerns systems composed of rigid elements with point contacts. Despite the simplicity of this approach, such systems exhibit complex dynamics, which motivates us to investigate fundamental questions, such as the local Lyapunov stability characterization of an equilibrium state. We also investigate the response of such systems to large perturbations, and related theoretical results are used to improve the earthquake resistance of rocking structures. A smaller portion of the project extends to systems capable of elastic deformations. Here, our works focuses on understanding and avoiding special forms of destabilization due to the interaction of friction and elasticity.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

If the contact and frictional forces of a mechanical system are estimated by simple models, the overall behavior of the system often remains surprisingly complex. The primary question of this project is if and how important aspects of the complex behavior can be predicted based on the results of simple tests. We work out new methods to predict if an equilibrium state of a given system possesses Lyapunov stability, as required in many robotics applications and also to avoid destabilization of a structure subject to earthquakes. In addition we identify design rules of elastic, slender and growing filaments detained by friction, which enables their endpoints to travel as far from each other as possible.

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

The proposed work focuses mainly on engineering and biological applications of theoretical results in contact mechanics, as well as on the construction of stability criteria, which are useful for practical applications. All of the expected results promote the synthesis of efficient and reliable systems in robotics, space research and structural engineering. Our results will assist engineers in designing lightweight manipulators with large radii of action (as often required in space exploration and robotics) or moving robots that avoid toppling. Our investigations will also uncover new methods to prevent the turnover of rocking structures during earthquakes. In addition to engineering application, we expect that our work focusing on elastic filaments in biological systems will uncover a new link between the growth of these structure and the constraints given by the underlying physical rules.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

It is a common problem of machines, robots and other engineering systems that components in physical contact which each other behave unexpectedly. Common disturbing phenomena (like noise, vibration, impacts, sudden motion or tip-over) often leading to structural damage or malfunction are caused by complex phenomena arising during contact interactions. The goal of this project is to better understand, describe and predict unexpected loss of stability in systems with contact as well as to develop design methods, which help us to avoid them. Loss of stability is a central issue in earthquake protection and in robotics. In addition to the engineering focus, we also address a closely related problem of biological systems: we examine how plants with slender, elastic roots have adapted to mechanical constraints in order to reach distant resources despite the resistance of the environment in contact with them.

Systems subject to contact, friction and collision interactions exhibit highly complex behavior. We do not know the full answer to some fundamental questions: for example if an equilibrium state is stable against small perturbations or not. In this research, we have developed new methods to investigate the Lyapunov stability of equilibria, which is directly applicable to robotics problems. We then investigated the behavior of systems subject to large perturbations (e.g. earthquake under a rocking structure, dropping of an electronic device), where the nature of the resulting motion determines the safety of the system. New methods have been developed to predict those characteristics of highly unpredictable motion that are important to us, providing an important tool for the design engineer. Finally, we have also examined what happens when, in addition to the factors mentioned above, the internal deformations of the system are significant. We have described new types of the loss of elastic stability, which impose theoretical limits on the performance of a soft robotic manipulators. We also pointed out the importance of contact interactions. Finally, we showed that adaptation to the mechanical phenomena investigated in this project can also be observed in plant roots.
