magyar összefoglaló
A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

Az ANCIENT CHARM EU FP7 NEST projekt keretében végzett demonstrációs mérések sikerét követően, 2012-ben helyeztük üzembe a BNC NIPS-NORMA világviszonylatban is egyedülinek számító mérőállomását.
A kiértékelés továbbfejlesztésével integráltan értelmezzük a különböző térbeli felbontású adatokat, ezzel kiváltva a rendkívül időigényes pontonkénti 3D pásztázást.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?
Ebben a részben írja le röviden, hogy mi a kutatás segítségével megválaszolni kívánt probléma, mi a kutatás kiinduló hipotézise, milyen kérdéseket válaszolnak meg a kísérletek.

Jelen kutatás célja kísérleti eljárás kidolgozása nagyméretű, strukturált és heterogén tárgyak átfogó jellemzésére, a prompt-gamma aktivációs analízis helyfüggő változata, a prompt-gamma aktivációs leképezés kiterjesztésével.

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

A neutronbefogásos gamma spektroszkópia elemanalitikai lehetőségeit a neutronos képalkotásból származó vizuális információval kibővítve hoztuk létre a PGAI-NT módszert.
A különféle tudományterületekről érkező felhasználóinkkal közösen elért eredményeink szilárd alapot jelentenek a pályázat eredményeinek tudományos hasznosítására. Eredményeink hazai és nemzetközi fórumokon történő bemutatása, vendégkutatói programunk és együttműködéseink mellett hallgatók, kutatók és szakmabeliek új generációjának képzése számottevő társadalmi haszonnal jár.

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

Most widespread element analysis techniques are not suitable for bulky heterogeneous or structured objects. Prompt-gamma activation imaging (PGAI), in combination with neutron tomography (NT), has proven its potential to fill this niche, thanks to the non-destructive nature and the high penetration depth of neutrons and gammas. This is of utmost importance for valuable cultural heritage objects and industrial applications. Following the success of the demonstration measurements within the ANCIENT CHARM EU FP7 NEST project, NIPS-NORMA, the single operational facility for this purpose worldwide, was set up in 2012 at the Budapest Neutron Centre.
Although the instrumentation aspects of the technique became already mature, advances in the data treatment can further expand its applicability. The proposed research aims at improving the data processing part to benefit from the synergetic use of multiple spatially resolved datasets, making the highly time-consuming pointwise scanning unnecessary. Neutron imaging and local chemical compositions from PGAI-NT technique will be combined with high-definition X-ray imaging, CAD design or laser-scanned point cloud, and voxelized MCNP calculations in order to achieve a comprehensive characterization of macroscale structure and the in-depth, but still localized elemental composition. The Monte Carlo data will be used to correct for the neutron and gamma attenuation within the object and validate the tomography-based correction approach, ultimately achieving unbiased local element concentrations.
The advanced experimental practice, data processing and the correction techniques will be applied on art and industrial objects.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

The motivation of the present research is to work out an advanced experimental procedure for comprehensive characterization of voluminous, and at the same time structured or heterogeneous objects. In order to achieve this aim, the spatially sensitive variant of the prompt gamma activation analysis, i.e. the prompt gamma activation imaging, is an adequate methodology. However, the present treatment of neutron self-shielding and gamma self-absorption, valid strictly only for homogeneous and thin samples, needs to be adapted to this new opportunity. The correction of the bulk sample effects is an important factor to avoid any systematic bias of the analytical results, a prerequisite to sustain the scientific utilization of the method, to comply with industrial quality standards, and finally to evolve it to a routine technique.
In parallel to the localized experimental data generated from the radiative neutron capture reaction, the neutron and gamma-absorption properties of the matter has to be pointwise quantified. We have to recover the already available information within the so-far separately treated datasets, e.g. neutron imaging, X-ray imaging, or spatially resolved Monte Carlo results and interpret them with the spatially resolved element analysis data in a unified approach.
The correction methods based on experimentally taken images have limitations, depending on the sample geometry and composition. This will be investigated and the optimal experimental conditions will be defined. With computer simulations, we will circumvent of the remaining limitations, and wherever possible, the two approaches will be crosschecked for validation.

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

Prompt gamma activation imaging, as a spatially resolved version of the well-established prompt gamma activation analysis technique, was invented and set up for the first time at our laboratory, and is being applied to the non-destructive analysis of valuable art objects, unique material science samples or industrial items. The element analysis capabilities of the neutron-capture gamma spectroscopy was extended with visual information from neutron imaging, forming the PGAI-NT technique. The NIPS-NORMA experimental station is at present the single facility in routine operation worldwide for PGAI-NT, with proven practices, convenient software background, flexible operation and several years of application experience. We can keep our leading position if the present research achieves its goals, but we intend to cooperate with our international partners to propagate the technique and find sustainable applications. An experimental station is expected to set up in Germany for 2018-19, whereas others are under consideration in Korea and USA. At these facilities, thanks to their higher neutron flux, one can further improve the spatial resolution and extend the portfolio of amenable sample types, improving the overall relevance and fitness of the technique.
The results we achieved in the recent past together with our cross-disciplinary scientific user base offers a solid foundation for scientific utilization of the present project’s results. The advancement of our user program and collaborations will generate social benefit by training a new generation of students, researchers and professionals and by worldwide dissemination and communication of our achievements to diverse audiences.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

To reveal the secrets of precious art objects, scrutinize unique material science samples or understand the behavior of industrial items, structure- and composition-characterization are equally important. Most existing element analysis techniques are limited to the surface layers only, while others require destructive sampling or dissolution. These approaches are all inappropriate for such delicate or valuable samples. A representative and at the same time spatially resolved element analysis can be achieved by means of neutrons and the emerging gamma radiation. This is the basis of the prompt-gamma activation imaging technique, a one-of-a-kind instrument and methodology developed at the Budapest Neutron Centre.
Our goal with this project is to combine element composition data with high-definition 3D imaging by neutrons and X-rays, as well as with results from detailed computer simulations to characterize the matter of the object in a spatially resolved and still non-destructive way. The joint interpretation of these so-far separately treated datasets offers significant benefits.
Thanks to these advancements, new fields of applications will become available, and the technique can find its application niche in multi-disciplinary research as well as in industrial applications.

We worked out a method to correct for the negative matrix effect of prompt-gamma activation analysis (PGAA) - related to the neutron self-shielding and gamma self-absorption – and thereby extending the scope of the technique from ideal point-like sample geometry to real-world samples. This was driven by the need from our user community for bulk-representative or position-sensitive elemental composition analysis of voluminous, complex-shaped, structured, or inhomogeneous objects. Our goal was achieved by a combination of three-dimensional surface and volumetric digital imaging techniques (optical 3D scanning, X-ray or neutron tomography), position-resolved element composition analysis (PGAI), and Monte Carlo computer simulations. The shapes of the samples were converted into the MCNP simulation environment, implementing the real experimental geometry. Neutrons and prompt-gamma rays were propagated through the object, and the attenuation of both radiation types was simulated. For the first time, a quantitative correction could be achieved. The method, after validation on test samples, was applied to bulky stone samples and art objects. Good general consistency was found between measurement positions, as well as in one spectrum, between the analytical lines of an element at multiple gamma energies. This development greatly improves the applicability of the PGAA method in general, as well as the capabilities of Budapest Neutron Centre’s PGAA and NIPS-NORMA facilities.
