magyar összefoglaló
A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

Kutatásaimba bevonom a szatírák és paródiák szerepét, illetve a párhuzamos Offenbach-recepció tanulságait. Mindemellett – a kutatási folyamat alapvetéseként – folytatom és kiegészítem a Haraszti által megkezdett sajtófeltárást különös tekintettel a 19. századi német nyelvű bemutatókra. A témaválasztás korábbi, többfelé ágazó kutatói tapasztalataim összegzése és következménye: disszertációmat az európai Wagner-recepcióban kulcsszerepet játszó Lisztről írtam; egy korábbi OTKA posztdoktori pályázat támogatásával alapvető forráskutatásokat végeztem a magyarországi operettjátszás történetéről; Bolyai-ösztöndíjasként pedig sajtókutatásokat folytatok 19. századi recepció témakörében.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

A magyarországi Wagner-recepció kutatása több okból is jelentősnek ígérkezik. A tárgyalt időszak sajtórecepciójának feltárása (Haraszti 1916-os munkájának folytatása és kiegészítése) a szó szoros értelmében évszázada esedékes feladata a magyar zenetudománynak. Hasonlóan alapkutatásnak számít az Operaház műsorpolitikájának elemzése a szóban forgó periódusban, valamint a zenei források feltárása – ezek mindegyike további, speciális kutatások alapját képezheti majd a jövőben. A századelő Wagner-kultuszának komplex vizsgálata úgyszintén kulcsfontosságú szemponttal járulhat hozzá a budapesti zeneélet kutatásához. A zeneszerzői Wagner-recepcióra irányuló analitikus tanulmányok, tekintettel a vizsgálandó komponisták általános zenetörténeti jelentőségére (Bartók), illetve nemzetközi ismertségére (Dohnányi), nemcsak a hazai, hanem a külföldi szakmai közösség figyelmére is számot tartanak – különösen ami Bartók színpadi műveinek, nevezetesen A kékszakállú herceg várának és A fából faragott királyfinak ilyen szempontú vizsgálatát illeti. Minthogy Wagner művei napjainkban is roppant népszerűek, a kutatás a szélesebb nyilvánosság érdeklődését is felkeltheti.

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

Earlier musicological work on how Wagner was received in Hungary has been notable but far from exhaustive. The starting point for my post-doctoral plans is the assumption behind earlier research by Haraszti (1916) and Tallián (2013, etc.) that the arrival of Wagner’s operas had decisive influence ‒ on the institutional history of music in Budapest and on the course taken by a new composer generation through the early decades of the 20th century. This I would like to augment with some new or briefly touched factors that alter the picture of Wagner’s reception and may arouse particular international interest. Accordingly, I am engaged in writing studies on early 20th-century programming policy at the Budapest Opera, research findings from the musical source materials at the National Széchényi Library, and Wagner’s influence on youthful works of Bartók and Dohnányi. In these I include the effects of satires and parodies from the contemporary reception of Offenbach. Alongside this, as a foundation for the research process, I follow up and enlarge on press research begun by Haraszti, notably reviews of the 19th-century German-language premières. The choice of subject encapsulates and draws on diverse previous research experience: my dissertation dealt with Liszt as a key factor in Wagnerʼs reception in Europe; I did basic research on the history of operetta practice in Hungary, funded by an earlier OTKA post-doctoral scholarship; and I am engaged as a Bolyai scholar in press research on the 19th-century reception.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

The underlying research aim is to learn just how and to what extent the appearance of Wagnerʼs works was decisive to the history of Budapest’s system of musical institutions and to the course of a new generation of composers in the last quarter of the 19th century, notably Bartók. The research seeks to reveal exactly which Wagner works were heard, when, and in what types of venue (German/Hungarian), and how they went down with critics at the time, and insofar as it emerges from the reviews, with the public. In addition I seek to resolve in some specialized studies matters: what types of musical source materials survive and what the various textual layers of these reveal (notably notes made by musicians); what theater and opera programming policy lay behind the climax of Wagnerism in Budapest in the early 1900s, and what negative influences may have been felt from the intensive Wagner cult, i. e. whether the Budapest premières of other composers following Wagner ‒ Richard Strauss’s Salome or even Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande ‒ were delayed or prevented by it. I also try to identify influence from Wagner on the Lichtregie of Bartók’s Bluebeard’s Castle or the orchestration and the leitmotifs of his Wooden Prince, or the character variations of Dohnányi. Ultimately, the underlying question in my research is what intentions and means lay behind the contemporary satires of the Wagner phenomenon and how and why the names of Wagner and Offenbach could be coupled in their reception.

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

Research into Hungary’s reception of Wagner looks promising in several ways. Exploration of the press reception, to follow up and augment Haraszti’s 1916 work, is a debt Hungarian musicology has owed for a century. Of similar importance is analysis of the Opera’s programming in the period and examination of the musical source materials. All three can count on further, specialist research in the future. Comprehensive examination of the turn-of-the-century Wagner cult can likewise contribute of a highly important aspect to research into the musical life of Budapest. As for analytical studies of the reception of Wagner by composers, the general importance to music history (Bartók) or wide international recognition (Dohnányi) of these will ensure wide professional attention at home and abroad. This need applies particularly to Bartók’s stage works, Bluebeard’s Castle and The Wooden Prince. Lastly, I attempt in my research to introduce some new aspects, by looking at the satires and parodies of the Wagner cult, and by comparing the receptions given to Wagner and Offenbach. The second pairing may come as a surprise. Of course Wagner was matched with several other stage composers in his time, but I see the contrast with Offenbach as especially symptomatic and worthwhile, as it was unnecessary to state it in simple terms of the genres in which they worked. As Wagner's operas are very popular in these days, the research could raise the interest of the wider public as well.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

Richard Wagner (1833‒1883), a German opera composer whose work is still hugely admired, had a big influence on contemporaries and on composer generations that followed. Although much musicological heed has been paid in recent decades to his press reception and his reception and influence as a composer, the literature on such influence in Hungary is far from exhaustive. My post-doctoral project seeks to make up for that. I certainly intend to continue and enlarge on initial work done a century ago (in 1916) by Emil Haraszti, directed at collecting the surviving documents (above all press reviews). In addition I am carrying out examinations that call for various comprehensive research methods, whose findings I will present publicly in successive studies. What I deal with includes the influence of the Wagner cult on the programming policy of the Opera in the early 20th century, and how all this affected a new generation of Hungarian composers around that time, more specifically Béla Bartók (1881‒1945) and Ernő Dohnányi (1877‒1960). I will also look into surviving musical source materials in the vast resources of the National Széchényi Library, for example musical parts played by orchestra members, where they often wrote comments on the works or performers of them. My researches will extend to such considerations, previously not discussed, as satires and parodies, for example through references to Wagner in the satirical magazine Borszem Jankó. Here I will be out to discover mainly what elements in the Wagner cult were targeted.

A 19. századi fővárosi színházi térkép alakulásának fényében behatóan elemeztem a korabeli sajtórecepció egyik közhelyét, a Wagner‒Offenbach szembeállítást.
kutatási eredmények (angolul)
During my work, I studied Richard Wagner’s Budapest reception, considering several new aspects. I examined the performing materials used for almost a century, kept at the Music Department of the National Széchényi Library. I documented with statistical data the increased role of Wagner performances in the early 20th-century program of the Opera House and interpreted the Wagnerian elements of Bartók’s dance play, 'The Wooden Prince', in the light of these changes. I also identified a 'Lohengrin' allusion in Bartók’s work, hitherto not discussed in the secondary literature. I pointed out that parallels with 'Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg' are conspicuous in Dohnányi’s opera, 'Der Tenor', Wagner is, however, not the only 19th-century composer quoted in the work; critics underemphasized the allusions to Mendelssohn, Weber and Nicolai possibly because the German premiere of Dohnányi’s work took place right in Nuremberg. Based on the satirical magazine 'Borsszem Jankó', I revealed that a serious opposition developed between Hans Richter and the Budapest Wagnerians at the beginning of the 1870s. His aspirations for the establishment of a Hungarian Wagner Association provoked resentment, and might have contributed to the fall of the local premiere of 'Rienzi' and his departure from Budapest. In the light of the 19th-century theatrical landscape of the capital, I provided a detailed analysis of a commonplace of contemporary press reception, the Wagner‒Offenbach opposition.
