Summary in Hungarian
A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

A kutatás célja nemzetközi együttműködésben Wigner FK Mátrai Gravitációs és Geofizikai Obszervatóriumában és más földfelszín alatti hosszú időtartamú szeizmológiai és elektromágneses mérések adatsorainak speciális szempontú kiértékelése. A kiértékelés a gravitációs hullám detektorok számára kritikus, más módszerekkel nehezen csillapítható, vagy szűrhető, 0.3-100Hz-es frekvenciatartományban a felszíni eredetű időjárási, kulturális és egyéb zajok csillapítását vizsgálja a Mátra hegységben.

Ezért egyrészt a terület szeizmikus jellemzését végezzük el és a mélységi csillapítást elemezzük közvetlenül a mérési adatok felhasználásával, másrészt termoreoelasztikus kontinuum elmélet segítségével, kőzetreológiai adatokat is megmérve és felhasználva.

A kutatás során a szokásos viszkoelasztikus csillapítási hatásokon túl a közelmúltban kidolgozott teljesebb, reológiai és termikus hatásokat is figyelembe vevő kontinuumodellt is felhasználjuk. A hullámterjedést jellemző megfelelő diszperziós relációkat laboratóriumi validálás után in situ körülmények között is ellenőrizzük, ezáltal a kontinuumelméletet is tesztelve.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?
Ebben a részben írja le röviden, hogy mi a kutatás segítségével megválaszolni kívánt probléma, mi a kutatás kiinduló hipotézise, milyen kérdéseket válaszolnak meg a kísérletek.

A kutatás alapkérdése kettős.

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

A termoreológiai kontinuumelmélet egyetlen tenzori belső változót alkalmazó nemegyensúlyi termodinamikán alapul.

Ebben a folyamatban igyekszünk a teljes magyar kutatóközösséghez együttműködően viszonyulni. Természetes vetélytársainkat a másik javasolt helyszínek (olasz, spanyol, holland) kutatócsoportjai jelentik, akik viszont standard módszerekkel dolgoznak.

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

Egyik ilyen helyszín a Mátra.

Summary
Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

The aim of the research is the evaluation of the long term data of seismic and electromagnetic measurements collected in the Matra Gravitational and Geophysical Observatory of Wigner RCP according to the special requirements of underground gravitational wave detectors. The sensitivity of these detectors depends on the cultural and meteorological noises in the 1-100Hz frequency range, therefore we are interested in the damping of these signals due to the depth from the surface in the Matra mountain.

We want to characterize the territory from a seismological point of view directly using the measurement data, and, on the other hand with the help of a thermorheological continuum model, using also rock mechanical laboratory data.

In this modeling characterization we apply a novel continuumphysical theory that considers thermal and rheological effects beyond the usual linear viscoelastic description. The corresponding dispersion relations of the wave propagation are to be validated in laboratory and in situ measurements, providing the necessary data and testing the continuum theory at the same time.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

The basic question of the research is twofold. We are to investigate the suitability of Matra hosting a third generation gravitational wave observatory, the Einstein telescope, when compared to other European places. This is an active participation in the site selection procedure, that is measurements and data analysis according to the methods chosen by the community for the site selection. On the other hand it is also a contribution to the development of criteria (e.g. by more elaborated dissipation models), this way participating in the evaluation of other European site candidates. Thus the question is: how good is Matra in damping the microseismological noise?

Our other important aim is the understanding the mechanism of noise damping in rock masses, hence an active contribution in the improvement of technological parameters of the observatory, wherever is the final realization. To this end the recently developed continuum elasticity theory with accounting thermal and rheological effects provides good chances because it is validated for deformation processes of rocks with moderate velocity. This theory was not applied yet for wave propagation. Here the question is the exact contribution of the new continuum theory to accoustic damping in rocks. What are the limits of validity of classical linear viscoelasticity?

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

The thermorheological continuum theory is based on non-equilibrium thermodynamics with a single tensorial internal variable. Therefore it is the first member of a larger, general frame theory with the posibility of further systematic extension. Every tests and application of the theory may help in clarifying the theoretical problems and hence opens a way toward future applications. This is the theoretical importance. The competitors in this respect are the representatives of other, different theories on non-equilibrium thermodynamics, e.g. H. C. Öttinger, M. Hütter of GENERIC or T. Ruggeri, G. Lebon of Extended Irreversible Thermodynamics.

The improvement of noise reduction is important beyond the gravitational wave detectors, in case if several technologies improving our quality of life .

The aimed evaluation of special seismological noises of Matra and the planned control measurements at other places in Hungary (in natural caves, in recently constructed tunnels, etc.) make possible that Hungary can be present in the site selection procedure and during the construction of the Einstein telescope, whenever it is realized in Europe. We are to collaborate with the complete related and interested research community in Hungary. Our natural competitors are the other European research groups of the other site candidates, who are working with standard methods regarding the damping. Here our extra added value can be the theoretical argument in this technology dominated engineering area.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

In 2016 the first direct observation of gravitational waves was accompished by high sensitivity interferometric detectors. Therefore a new channel of information collection has been opened for researching the Universe: humanity opened her ears, now we are able to listen the stars. The next step is to build more sensitive instruments that are capable systematic observaitions. The detectors of discoveries will be exchanged to observatories of systematic research.

The best (and cheapest) planned observatory is the Einstein telescope. With the underground installation this instrument can eliminate the most problematic low frequency noises. The first report of site evaluation, summarizing the corresponding measurements, indicates three best site candidates that are worth of further systematic study. One of these is the Mátra mountain in Hungary. Therefore, recently Wigner RCP established the Matra Gravitational and Geophysical Laboratory in the Gyöngyösoroszi mine and installed several instruments there with national and international collaboration.

The aim of the research is the evaluation of data coming from these long term seismological and electromagnetic measurements according to the point of view of the installation of a third generation gravitational wave observatory. We are to evaluate the sources of noises, the rock environment, model the damping of noises according to the best available theories of continuum physics and suggest related technologies of noise reduction. This way Hungary may be present in the site selection procedure of the Einstein telescope and during its construction, wherever it is realized in Europe.

Results in Hungarian
- Elemeztük a kőzettömeg reológiai tulajdonságainak hatását a newtoni zaj kialakulására. Laboratóriumi mérésekkel igazoltuk a kidolgozott kontinuumelmélet helytállóságát mátrai andezit próbatesteken. - A gradiens, azaz gyengén nemlokális termodinamikai kontinuumelmélet keretei közé illesztettük a Newtoni gravitációt, figyelembe véve a gravitációs tér energiáját. Ehhez számos ponton továbbfejlesztettük a termikus hatások leírásának elméleti kereteit folyadékokban, gázokban és rugalmas szilárd közegekben. - Gravitációs hullámok közegben történő terjedésével, illetve földalatti észlelhetőségének mértékével kapcsolatban végeztünk számításokat.
Results in English
The preparation of Hungarian activity in the European Einstein Telescope project: - We have characterised the feasibility of the Mátra mountain range for gravitational wave detectors. Seismic, electromagnetic, infrasound and muon detector measurements were performed for several years in our local laboratory. We have elaborated the methodology of evaluating the specific seismic long term seismic measurements and developed infrasound detectors for that purpose together with Atomki. - We have analysed the influence of the rheological rock properties for the Newtonian noise. Therefore we have significantly developed the non-equilibrium thermodynamic theory of anelastic materials and elaborated a reliable and fast method of numerical modelling of wave propagation in this media. The continuum theory was verified for andesite test samples from the Mátra. - Newtonian gravity was treated in the framework of a weakly nonlocal, thermodynamical continuum theory. The key element of the novel derivation is the field energy of gravity in the thermodynamic framework. The theory of thermal effects in anelastic fluids and solids was significantly improved in many respect. - We have evaluated the detectability measures of gravitational waves in underground detectors.
