magyar összefoglaló
A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

A kutatás tárgya erősen korrelált szilárdtestek és fémes heteroszerkezetek véges hőmérsékleti mágnességének vizsgálata, amely elengedhetetlen fontosságú a modern mágneses adattárolási és mágnesesmemória-alkalmazások tekintetében. Az úgynevezett RDLM (relativistic disordered local moment theory) módszer segítségével megvizsgáljuk átmenetifém-ötvözetek véges hőmérsékleti viselkedését, hogy mélyebben megértsük a lokális momentumok kialakulása és a mágneses anizotrópia mögött húzódó elveket. Ez a fajta alapkutatás kulcsfontosságú a specializált heteroszerkezetek jövőbeli tervezéséhez, amit a jövőbeli ipari alkalmazások tesznek szükségessé. A korrelált anyagok, ritkaföldfémek és korrelált átmenetifém-oxidok, hasonlóan központi szerepet játszanak például a magnetokalorikus, mágnesesmemória-ötvözet és kicserélődési eltolódás (exchange bias) alkalmazások szempontjából. Majdani exchange bias rendszerekre való alkalmazásokat szem előtt tartva megkíséreljük általánosítani a spinmodellek származtatására alkalmas jelenlegi módszereinket, hogy az LSDA+U közelítéssel kombinálva is konzisztensen alkalmazhassuk őket.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?
Ebben a részben írja le röviden, hogy mi a kutatás segítségével megválaszolni kívánt probléma, mi a kutatás kiinduló hipotézise, milyen kérdéseket válaszolnak meg a kísérletek.

A jelen kutatási pályázat célja, hogy kiterjessze a programcsomagunkba a közelmúltban kifejlesztett és implementált módszereket illető gyakorlati tapasztalatainkat, továbbá hogy folytassa ezt a fejlesztési munkát a kutatási profilunk szélesítése érdekében. A két szóban forgó módszer a véges hőmérsékleti mágnesség leírására alkalmazható RDLM (relativistic disordered local moment) elmélet, illetve az úgynevezett LSDA+U módszer, amely erős, atomon belüli elektron-elektron kölcsönhatást mutató rendszerek leírását teszi lehetővé. A kutatás alapkérdései a következők:
(1) Milyen a 3d-4d/5d ötvözetek véges hőmérsékleti mágneses viselkedése? Hogyan függnek ezekben a rendszerekben az indukált momentumok a hőmérséklettől, és milyen a magnetokristályos anizotrópia hőmérsékletfüggése?
(2) Milyen a határrétegi Dzyaloshinskii--Moriya-kölcsönhatás hőmérsékletfüggése 3d-5d szuperrácsokban?

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

A jelen pályázat fókuszában erős elektronkorrelációt mutató anyagok illetve véges-hőmérsékleti mágnesség áll. A pályázat keretében használt és továbbfejlesztett módszerek lehetővé teszik, hogy kutatásunk középpontjában továbbra is olyan rendszereket tartsunk, amelyek kulcsfontosságúak a modern technológiai fejlesztések szempontjából. Különösen a spintronikai alkalmazások szempontjából, úgymint a mágneses adattárolás és mágneses memóriák, elengedhetetlen fontosságú a magnetokristályos anizotrópia hőmérsékletfüggését meghatározó alapvető folyamatok feltérképezése. A kutatócsoportunk szorosan közreműködött a véges hőmérsékleti RDLM elmélet kidolgozásában, és a meglévő implementációnk továbbfejlesztése lépéselőnyt ad számunkra a nemzetközi színtéren.

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

A jelen pályázat tárgya a fémes mágnesség atomi skálán történő, alapkutatási célú vizsgálata.
Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

The current research project targets the study of finite-temperature magnetism of strongly correlated solids and metallic heterostructures, considered to be indispensable from the perspective of modern magnetic data storage and magnetic memory applications. We will explore the finite-temperature behaviour of transition metal alloy systems using the relativistic disordered local moment (RDLM) theory in order to better understand the principles underlying local moment formation and magnetic anisotropy. Such fundamental research is crucial for tailoring heterostructures to meet industrial needs in the future. Correlated materials, rare earths and correlated transition metal oxides, are similarly central classes of materials for applications such as magnetocalorics, magnetic shape memory alloys, or exchange bias systems. Motivated by ultimate applications to exchange bias systems, we will try to generalize existing methods used for deriving spin model parameters such that they can consistently be combined with the LSDA+U approach.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

The goal of the current research project is to extend our practical experience with the methods recently developed and implemented in our program package, as well as to continue this development in order to broaden our research profile. The two main frameworks in question are the relativistic disordered local moment (RDLM) theory capable of describing finite-temperature magnetism, and the so-called LSDA+U method which allows to treat materials which have strong intraatomic electron-electron interaction. The basic questions of the research project are the following:
(1) What is the finite-temperature magnetic behaviour of 3d-4d/5d alloys? How do the induced moments in these materials evolve with temperature, and what is the temperature-dependence of the magnetocrystalline anisotropy like?
(2) What is the temperature-dependence of the interface Dzyaloshinskii--Moriya interaction in 3d-5d superlattices? Can a combination of RDLM theory with spin spiral calculations provide a realistic description?
(3) How does the LSDA+U method apply to correlated transition metal oxides? Can the LSDA+U approach, despite its comparative simplicity, grasp the essentials of correlated behaviour in these materials?
(4) Is it possible to consistently derive spin model parameters from the electronic structure of strongly correlated materials using the LSDA+U approach?

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

The current project focuses on materials possessing strong electron correlation and on finite-temperature magnetism. The methods being used and further developed in the project will enable us to maintain the focus of our research on systems that are crucial for modern technological advancement. In particular, for spintronics applications such as magnetic data storage or magnetic memories it is indispensable to explore the basic processes affecting the temperature-dependence of the magnetocrystalline anisotropy. Our group has been closely involved in the development of the finite-temperature RDLM theory, and improving our existing implementation gives us an advantage in the international scene. The LSDA+U method allows the investigation of materials with strong electron correlations. This framework extends our research profile to rare earths and correlated transition metal oxides, many of which are in the center of ongoing fundamental and industrial research. The current research project thus aims to investigate fundamental physical phenomena in classes of materials that are relevant for modern research and industrial development. A particular strength of the project is that our program, building on the screened KKR multiple scattering theory, allows us to treat layered heterostructures and magnetic interfaces natively, without having to construct auxiliary periodic model systems and thus lacking any corresponding artifacts in the electronic structure.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

The current project concerns the fundamental research of metallic magnetism on the atomic scale. Our research group has extensive experience with the theoretical investigation of materials which are in the center of cutting-edge research, such as heterostructures used in magnetic data storage and magnetic sensor technologies, or novel spintronics applications. Recent developments in our methodology have enabled us to explore new classes of phenomena and materials, in particular magnetism at finite temperature and strongly correlated electron systems such as rare earth metals. The current research project aims to extend our experience with the newly developed methods and to carry on the theoretical development of the computational methods we use in order to gain further insight into the basic physical processes governing magnetism.

The goal of the research project was to gain deeper understanding of the processes governing magnetism in transition metal and correlated systems. We made theoretical and implementational developments, and applied our existing and developed methodology to various systems important for potential spintronics applications. We took part in developing a new method for investigating superconducting heterostructures and applying it to Nb/Au/Fe layers. We examined the anisotropy and magnetic interactions of MgO/Fe/MgO sandwiches, and found surprising non-monotonic temperature dependence of the effective anisotropy due to the strong layer dependence of the parameters. We mapped out the weak ferromagnetic state in the Mn3Z triangular antiferromagnet family, and explored the significance of the Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction for the helical ground state of Mn3Sn. We extended our program code to calculate bulk systems more efficiently, and participated in developing a method to compute isotropic exchange interactions in density functional codes based on non-orthogonal basis sets. Based on our self-consistent-field code we implemented the LDA+U method into our program responsible for computing exchange interactions, extending the range of systems for which we can compute spin models to materials showing electronic correlation.
