A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

Az Európai Nukleáris Kutatási Szervezet (CERN) Nagy Hadronütköztetője (LHC) rekord 13 TeV tömegközéponti energiájú proton - proton ütközéseket szolgáltat, ezzel egy új energiatartományt nyitva meg a részecskefizikai vizsgálódások előtt. Kutatócsoportunk ezen világélvonalbeli kutatásokban vesz részt a Higgs-bozont 2012-ben felfedező CMS nemzetközi együttműködés tagjaként.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?
Ebben a részben írja le röviden, hogy mi a kutatás segítségével megválaszolni kívánt probléma, mi a kutatás kiinduló hipotézise, milyen kérdéseket válaszolnak meg a kísérletek.

A Standard Modell (SM) remekül leírja a laboratóriumban észlelt jelenségeket, ám számos kérdést hagy megválaszolatlanul. Mi a világegyetemet betöltő sötét anyag?

A két-bozon végállapotok pontos vizsgálata lehetőséget ad a magasabb skálájú fizikából származó anomális csatolások mérésére.

Célunk új részecskék közvetlen megfigyelése, amely egyértlemű jelét adná a SM-en túli fizika létének, illetve az anomális mértékcsatolások mérése, amely ennek hiányában információt szolgáltathat az alapvető elmélet tulajdonságairól. A differenciális hatáskeresztmetszet mérések azonban az Új Fizika jelenlététől függetlenül is fontosak a magasabb rendű perturbatív SM számolások ellenőrzéséhez.

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

Új (szuperszimmetrikus) részecskék felfedezése például lehetőséget adhat a Világegyetemet betöltő sötét anyag laboratóriumi tanulmányozására. A SM alternatív kiterjesztéseinek vizsgálatával, egyes modellek megerősítésével és mások kizárásásával közelebb juthatunk az alapvető elmélet megismeréséhez.

A technológiai újítások, amelyek a világélvonalbeli részecskefizikai kísérleti eszközök fejlesztésének velejárói a hétköznapi élet több területén is alkalmazásra találhatnak, ahogy ez a múltban is nem egyszer megtörtént.

A kísérletekbe rendszeresen bevonunk fiatal diákokat, a kutatócsoport tagjai részt vesznek a felsőoktatásban. Tudományterületünk művelésével, ismereteink, tapasztalataink, lelkesedésünk átadásával hozzájárulunk a fizika, természet- és mérnöki tudományok fejlesztéséhez és népszerűsítéséhez is.

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

Milyen törvények írják le a világunkat felépítő elemi részecskék viselkedését? Mi a Világegyetemünket betöltő sötét anyag?

Summary
Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research provides proton-proton collisions at a record 13 TeV center-of-mass energy, opening a new energy regime for particle physics research. Our group participates in the world-leading CMS international collaboration that co-discovered the Higgs boson in 2012.

Our goal is to use the Run 2 CMS data to study the fundamental theory beyond the Standard Model (SM) by searching for new phenomena predicted by its various extensions with two complementary methods: the precise measurement of known SM processes and the direct search for new particles.

The study of electroweak symmetry breaking is a particularly promising way towards New Physics. The precise measurement of final states containing two electroweak vector bosons may shed light on the necessary extension of the SM, either through the appearance of new resonances, or, in their absence, through slight deviations in the high energy behavior from the theoretical predictions due to anomalous gauge couplings.

The postulation of supersymmetry is one of the best ideas to answer the deficiencies of the SM, among others it can provide a viable dark matter candidate. Our group will search for signs of pair production of supersymmetric partner particles, in particular in final states with top quarks or a Higgs boson.

To accomplish our physics goals, it is indispensable to participate in data taking, in the operation and improvement of the experimental apparatus and the measurement of its precision. Our proposal thus includes contributions to the inner tracking detector and the luminosity measurement.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

The Standard Model (SM) describes very precisely the phenomena observed in the laboratory, but leaves multiple questions unanswered. What is the dark matter that fills the Universe? Why is gravity weak compared to the other gauge interactions? Is it possible to construct a coherent theory that describes all four known interactions? These and similar questions indicate that an unknown New Physics hides beyond the SM.

One of the most promising extensions of the SM postulate the existence of supersymmetry (SUSY), the most general symmetry of space-time, linking fermionic and bosonic states. As a consequence, each SM particle gains a supersymmetric partner. Assuming that the extension provides a solution to the hierarchy problem, the partner particles are expected to have a mass in the order of TeV, which makes them susceptible to detection at the LHC.

If the energy scale of New Physics proves to be too high for the direct production of new particles, the study of the properties of the Higgs boson recently discovered at the LHC and of the scattering of electroweak vector bosons may open a window towards the extended theory. The precise study of two-boson final states allows the measurement of the anomalous couplings originating from higher-scale physics.

Our goal is the direct observation of new particles providing clear evidence of physics beyond the SM, and the measurement of anomalous couplings which - even if no new particle is seen - can provide information on the fundamental theory. The differential cross-section measurements, however, are important irrespective of the presence of New Physics to put higher order perturbative SM calculations to test.

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

Through the study of proton-proton collisions we can understand the fundamental laws governing the behavior of elementary particles, leading also to the understanding of the early Universe, the first microseconds after the Big Bang.

Our research can give answers to the open questions of particle and astrophysics. For example, the detection of new (supersymmetric) particles could allow the direct laboratory study of dark matter that fills our universe. With the study of alternative extensions of the SM, reinforcing some models and excluding others, we will get closer to the discovery of the fundamental theory.

The technological innovations that accompany the development of world-class particle physics experiments find use in multiple areas of everyday life, as it has happened many times in the past.

We often involve young students in the experiments, and the members of our research team participate in higher education. Through the cultivation of our fields of research, the transmission of our knowledge, experience and enthusiasm, we contribute to the development and popularization of physics, natural and engineering sciences.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

What are the laws of nature that govern the behavior of the elementary particles that make up our world? What is the dark matter that fills our Universe? Are there undiscovered new particles, new interactions, new symmetries? Is it possible to construct the Theory of Everything that would describe in the same framework gravity that governs the movement of heavenly bodies, electricity responsible for the operation of our electrical appliances, and nuclear interactions that generate the energy in the Sun?

These are some of the questions that we study in the CMS experiment operating at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). By studying the collisions of protons accelerated to higher than ever energies we can also learn about the conditions in the first few microseconds after the birth of our Universe.

The goal of our research group is to contribute to the better understanding of the microscopic world and the Universe through the study of the properties of known particles and through the discovery of new phenomena and particles that were never seen before.
