magyar összefoglaló
A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

A projektnek két célja van: egyrészt a 16, századi magyar és európai történetírás jellegzetességeinek és trendjeinek új szempontú elemzése Forgách Ferenc (1535-1577) 22 könyvből álló Commentarii-jén keresztül, másrészt pedig a mű középtávon megvalósítható kritikai kiadásának az előkészítése. E kitűzött célt levéltári kutatásokon, a mű korai kéziratainak vizsgálatán, valamint a szöveg és életrajz kontextusainak bemutatásán keresztül kívánja elérni. A projekt során megvalósítandó konkrét cél egy a Forgáchra és művére fókuszáló monografikus munka elkészítése, amelyben a filológiai munka mellett a szöveg hátterének és különböző kontextusainak részletes bemutatására is nagy hangsúly helyeződik. Miután a Commentarii (egyedülálló módon a magyarországi kora újkori történetírásban) nem kizárólagosan magyar történet, és elkészítésekor az író számos nyugat európai forrásmunkát is felhasznált, a mű európai eszme-, irodalom-, és kulturális történeti vonatkozásainak kibontása – részben a hozzáférhető korabeli nyomtatványok, részben pedig a gazdag szakirodalom tükrében – kiemelkedő fontossággal bír.
A monográfia eredményei a Commentarii párhuzamosan formálódó kritikai kiadásába is beépülhetnek, a projekt tehát fontos lépést jelenthet a Monumenta Hungariae Historica Scriptores sorozatban mára teljesen elavult és sokszor pontatlan vagy hibás kiadásban megjelent szerzők műveinek valódi kritikai kiadása felé is.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

Írója művelt humanista, aki előbb a bécsi, majd a gyulafehérvári udvar szolgálatában fontos adminisztratív pozíciókat tölt be, belülről ismeri tehát a világot amiről ír.
Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

The project has a twofold aim: on one hand to analyze from new aspects the particularities and trends of 16th century Hungarian and European historiography through the Commentarii of Ferenc Forgách (1535-1577), and on the other hand, to prepare the critical edition of the same work in the near future to be published. It intents to realize these purposes by researching archival documents, analyzing the early manuscript tradition of Forgách’s work and delineating the different contexts of the text and biography. The concrete purpose during the project to be realized is a monographic study focusing on Forgách’s life and work, in which among the strick philological work the backgrounds and different contexts of the text would be also emphasized. Since the Commentarii – unically in the early modern Hungarian historiography – is not exclusively a national history and the author used numerous European sources, it is also indispensable to link the text to the different political, intellectual, cultural or literary trends of early modern Europe, partly through the contemporary European prints, partly by using the recent scholarly literature.
The results of the monography could be built into the critical edition being prepared in parallel, so the project could become also an earnest initiative towards the real critical edition of those authors, whose for nowadays completely outdated and inaccurate editions has been last published in the series of Monumenta Hungariae Historica Scriptores during the 19th century.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

During his shortened lifetime, Forgách Ferenc (1535-1577) carried out a really changeful political career first at the Habsburg court in Vienna, then in the Szapolyai- and Báthory-court in Gyulafehérvár, serving so two German emperors and two Transylvanian princes. His contemporary historical work was written in the 1570’s but published only in 1788, but neither this, nor the next and since then last edition (Mayer-Toldy, 1866) cannot be regarded as a critical one. Thus the edited text now available is wrong in numerous places (as it has been already concluded by István Borzsák who translated the work into Hungarian in the 1970’s) and definitely needs a major philological correction. The work’s elaboration in the literature – in spite of thorough studies in the early 20th century – is also far from complete, due to the mentioned philological incorrectness and especially in comparison with since then discovered documents, numerous early modern prints already on-line available and recently elaborated methods and aspects of the literature.
One of the project’s basic tasks is to estimate the divergencies between the partly autograph manuscript in Pécs (which has not been used by both editions), the other early copies and the edited texts and to identify the genealogy of the manuscripts. The project’s other main task is to explore the different connections and contexts of the Commentarii, where should be partly the biographical and political background, partly the patterns of intellectual history and history of mentality depicted with special emphasis on history of European political and historical thought and on the influence of popular culture on them.

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

Since the synthetic study of Emma Bartoniek, which basically was written during the 1950’s but published in 1975 posthumously, there have been little or nothing moved forward exploring early modern historiography in Hungary. Although most of the texts have been in the meantime into Hungarian translated, the reality is, that the original Latin texts, published first and last in the 19th century in the series of Monumenta Historica Scriptores, lack a proper critical edition as well. Without these critically edited and published texts our knowledge remains necessarily incomplete about the Hungarian history of 16th century.
Ferenc Forgách and his Commentarii is not an exception to this rule: despite of the several but important studies in the early 20th century, the critical edition of the work is still missing and so are modern, comparatistic studies dealing with the different backgrounds, contexts and connections of the text. This situation has not been changed by publishing the Hungarian translation of the work: it has more likely covered the gap, which is more profound considering the truly uniqueness of the Commentarii not only in the Hungarian but in the European early modern historiography as well. The author is a politician, who familiar is both with the court in Vienna and Gyulafehérvár and really well informed regarding international affairs due to his diplomatic missions, and moreover, he is also a well-educated humanist, graduated at the University of Padua. Confronting these particularities with the crushing picture of the Commentarii about early modern Hungarian and European public affairs is more than puzzling and indeed, this ambivalence has not been resolved in the literature till today. The project aims basically to explain this contrast, partly by envolving sources and partly by using the recently elaborated aspects and methods of the literature and explicitly tends to a deeper understanding of the early modern political and intellectual history through the revaluation of that work, which has indisputably a unique importance not only from the Hungarian, but from the European perspective as well.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

Ferenc Forgách’s (1535-1577) Commentarii, written in Latin in the 1570’s is one of the most thrilling work in early modern Hungarian historiography. The author is a well-educated humanist, who held first at the court in Vienna, then in Gyulafehérvár important administrative positions, so he knew as a proper insider the world he has written about. And what he did write was mostly more than unflattering for the treated ones. Among the events of the two decades between 1551 and 1572 dealt in the book annalistically, Forgách reveals to his readers a real catalogue of mortal sins, weaknesses and moral decay. Alcoholism, rapiny, murder, adultery and corruption – these are the main features and motives of the Hungarian and partly the European contemporary history by him, for those the unique solace could be a predestinarian hope in God’s vengeance. Although, the work is available in Hungarian to the wider audience, systematic researches regarding the Latin text’s philological emendation and the question of authenticity his stories’ have not taken yet place, not to mention the exploration of the text’s multiple contexts. The project aims to complete these deficiencies, partly by discovering the manuscript tradition and genealogy, and partly by analyzing the genesis, political background, intellectual and cultural links and connections of the text.

These purposes have been realized only partly due to the pandemic situation and an unexpected discovery in 2020, which shunted the research to the manuscript work of Gian Michele Bruto and to the absolutely unexplored territory of the manuscript tradition of early modern historiography. For the critical edition however, tha lineage of the manuscripts of Forgach’s work has been identified; furthermore, the results of the new discoveries is being published this year.
