A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

A funkcionális renormálási csoport (RG) módszer a kvantumelmélet egyik legfontosabb nemperturbatív eszköze. A kifejlesztett RG módszert kvantum renormálási csoportnak (QRG) nevezzük.

Az általánosított RG módszer segítségével megvizsgáljuk, hogy a korábban RG módszerrel kapott eredmények módosulnak-e. Megjelenhetnek a modellben új fixpontok vagy akár új fázisok is. A pályázat alapjául szolgáló közleményben kvantumelméleti modellek infravörös (IR) fixpontját vizsgáltam.

Keresünk olyan fizikai menyiséget, amelynek a QRG módszerrel kapott értéke eltér a hagyományos RG módszerrel kapot értéktől.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?
Ebben a részben írja le röviden, hogy mi a kutatás segítségével megválaszolni kívánt probléma, mi a kutatás kiinduló hipotézise, milyen kérdéseket válaszolnak meg a kísérletek.

A pályázat célja a funkcionális renormálási csoport (RG) módszer olyan általánosítása, amely nemcsak a tiszta, hanem a kevert állapotok járulékával is számol.

A következő kérdésekre keressük a választ:
- Hogyan módosul a vizsgált modellek fázisszerkezete a QRG tárgyalásban a hagyományos RG tárgyaláshoz képest?

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

A projektben a funkcionális renormálási csoport (RG) módszer olyan általánosítását tervezzük megvalósítani, amely a tiszta állapotokon túl a kevert állapotok járulékát is figyelembe veszi.

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

A különböző méretekhez különböző természeti törvények tartoznak. A mikroszkopikus világunk törvényeit tekintjük alapvetőnek. A makrovilágunk fizikai törvényei összetettebbek, bonyolultabbak.

A fizikában használatos renormálás azonban hiányos. A kvantumelmélet egyik legfontosabb eleme az összefonódás. Ezek olyan elemek, amelyeknek nincs megfelelője a klasszikus fizikában.

Summary
Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

The functional renormalization group (RG) method is a very powerful tool in quantum physics. The traditional RG method can account only for the contribution of the pure states, but it cannot take into account the mixed states. It implies, that the RG method is not complete. Our goal is to develop such an RG method, which can account for the mixed states, therefore it contains the contribution of the entangled states. The entanglement is one of the most important element of quantum physics, since it has no classical physical counterpart. We call the new RG method as the quantum renormalization group (QRG).

With the generalized RG method we investigate whether the results obtained by the traditional RG method are changed or not. New phases or fixed points can appear in the models. In the base article of the project I investigated the infrared (IR) fixed points of quantum field theoretical models. We expect that in the vicinity of the IR fixed point the contribution of the mixed states is significant, therefore the QRG method gives different results. We hope that the new method can clarify the reason of the appearance of the singularity at the IR fixed point. We should reinvestigate every single model that were analyzed so far, which can give new project ideas for young researchers.

As a first step we investigate simple scalar models with the QRG method, and we compare the new results with the old ones obtained by the RG method. Our main goal is to analyze a realistic model with the QRG method, namely the quantum electrodynamics. We look for such an observable which value becomes different if we calculate it by RG or by QRG methods.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

The goal of the project is to generalize the functional renormalization group (RG) method in such a way, that, besides the pure states, it can account for the mixed states, too. As a working hypothesis we assume, that the generalized RG (QRG) method in the closed time path (CTP) formalism can take into account the contribution of the mixed states. With this formalism we can describe the entanglement of the low and the high energy modes. In our project we intend to investigate some scalar models and the quantum electrodynamics with the QRG method.

We look for the answer for the following questions
- How is the phase structure modified in the QRG treatment if we compare it with the traditional RG analysis?
- Are there new phases or new fixed points in the models?
- Are there any observables which value differs in the treatments of RG and QRG?

The project is a theoretical investigation, and we treat analytical and numerical calculations.

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

We generalize the idea of the functional renormalization group method in order to take into account the mixed states besides the pure states. The investigation is very important, because the role of the mixed states is not clarified in the RG method. Their contribution can be significant in particular around the infrared (IR) fixed point.

The traditional RG method is formulated in Euclidean spacetime. The main investigation area in the renormalization is the quantum Einstein gravity, where more and more articles handle problems in Minkowski spacetime, with Lorentz signature instead of the Euclidean one. In our project we argue, that it can be treated self consistently only in the framework of the closed time path (CTP) formalism.

The power of the project comes from the fact, that the QRG method with the CTP formalism provides us the natural language of quantum theory, while other researchers use the analytic continuation of the Euclidean formalism into the Minkowski one, however this idea can be used only perturbatively. We expect that our results will be very provocative in this research area.

We believe, that only the QRG method can give a proper theoretical framework for the treatment of the mixed states and for the usage of the Lorentz signature. We should reinvestigate every model that was treated by the traditional RG method earlier. It can provide the young researchers new investigation areas.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

Our world shows us different faces if we consider it at different energy or distance scales. We see great differences at subatomic level, with our eyes, or in a telescope. The different scales need different laws of physics. We consider the microscopic interactions as the fundamental ones. The laws of the macroscopic world seem to be quite complicated. Nevertheless the researchers always try to understand the complexity of the macroscopic world starting from the simplicity of the microscopic interactions. The renormalization can provide us a possible solution to this problem.

We note, that the traditional RG method is incomplete. The entanglement is one of the most important element in quantum theory, since it has no classical physical counterpart. It implies, that every quantum theoretical method is incomplete, if it cannot account for the contribution of the entangled states. The traditional RG treatment cannot calculate with the entangled states, therefore we should reformulate the RG method in order to account for the entanglement.

The goal of the project is to modify the traditional RG method in such a way that it contains the contribution of the entangled states. We should reinvestigate all the models by the new RG method.

Ezzel a csatolások komplexé váltak.

In this project our goal was to treat the interaction between the physical system and its environment in the framework of the functional renormalization group (RG) method. In the RG method we can identify the physical system with the infrared (IR) modes, while the ultraviolet (UV) modes can play the role of the environment. We consider our physical system as an open system, where the traditional RG technique does not work effectively. We need the closed time path (CTP) formalism to get the quantum dynamics of an open system. It is given in Minkowski spacetime, so first we should consider this issue. The Minkoswki formalism raised several new questions which should be answered first. First we had to face with the nonlocality of the action, and then to generate complex couplings during the evolution. We investigated the one-component scalar field, the sine-Gordon model and the conformally reduced gravity model including a bilocal potential. We got, that the nonlocality makes significant changes in the properties of the models. We modified the RG evolution equation by including a finite subtraction point to complexify the couplings. This enabled us to discuss real particles and finite lifetime, which are important ingredients of the open systems.
