Summary in Hungarian
A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

A topológikus szupravezető fázisok eléréséhez ezeket a struktúrákat szupravezető elektródákkal kontaktáljuk.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?

Két fő irányt követünk a grafén MF-ek létrehozásához.
1) Növeljük a spin pálya kölcsönhatást grafénben, és ötvözzük szupravezető kontaktusokkal és mágneses terekkel.
2) A második megközelítés a Landau-szintek magas mágneses terekben történő felhasadásán alapul: két egyrétegű grafén egymásra helyezésével, melyekben a megfelelő Landau szintek vannak betöltve, egy kvantum spin Hall állapot jön létre.

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

A grafénban létrejövő topológikus szupravezetésének bizonyítása jelentős mérföldkő lenne a topológikus kvantumszámítás felé, és megnyitná a területet a grafénalapú eszközök számára. A grafén várhatóan jelentős előnyökkel bírhat alternatív platformokkal szemben, ami komoly szereplővé teheti a topológikus kvantumszámításban. A konzorcium szakértő a szükséges területeken:MF mérések, nagy mobilitású grafén és van der Waals a heterostruktúrák előállítása, a Josephson-mérések grafénben, Andreev reflexió, kvantum Hall effektus és Josephson sugárzás mérése. Ezenkívül a konzorcium tagja egy az MF-ok elméletében vezető szerepet játszó csoport, akik elsőként vizsgálták a grafén alapú MF-ek létrejöttét számolások segítségével.

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

Summary
Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

This project will leverage the unique properties of graphene (long-range ballistic transport, clean interfaces with superconductors, tuneable properties through van der Waals engineering) to realize a new platform for topological superconductivity and Majorana Fermions (MFs).
We will follow two different complementary routes to engineer MZMs: (a) enhance spin-orbit interaction in graphene by stacking it on high spin orbit 2D materials, and (b) use the peculiar quantum Hall phases in single or twisted bilayer graphene to induce quantum spin-Hall phases. We will then induce topological superconducting phases by coupling these structures to superconducting electrodes. The emergence of MZMs will be identified using tunnelling spectroscopy and current phase relation of Josephson junctions, both of which produce smoking-gun signatures of these excitations.
To achieve these goals we will combine several cutting edge building blocks: high mobility graphene, induced spin orbit interaction, supercurrents in a quantum Hall states, crossed Andreev reflection and, tunnelling spectroscopy and on-chip detection of Josephson radiation. We will supplement our experiments with theoretical studies to interpret results, optimize device architectures, and to develop novel directions.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

The field of topological superconductivity, while relatively new, has seen tremendous progress in recent years. This includes experimental advances with both intrinsic topological superconductors and engineered topological superconductors by means of the proximity effect in nanowires and topological insulators. Although these material systems are quite promising several technical problems persist, like remaining bulk conductance in topological insulators, disorder in nanowires or interfacing these materials with superconducting contacts is also challenging.
The main question of this proposal if graphene can be used as a platform for topological superconductivity.
There are two main directions to produce MZMs in graphene.
1) Enhance spin orbit interaction in graphene, and combine it with superconducting contacts and in-plane B-fields to reach a topological regime.
2) The second approach is based on the breaking of the Landau levels at high magnetic fields: by placing two quantum Hall graphene monolayers atop each a quasi-quantum spin Hall state is formed.

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

The first demonstration of topological superconductivity in graphene would be a major milestone
towards topological quantum computation, and would open up the field for graphene based devices.
Graphene is expected to exhibit advantages over alternative platforms, which would make it a strong
contender towards implementing topological quantum computation. The consortium is expert in all
the aspects needed for the proposal: MF measurements, high quality graphene and van der Waals
heterostructures, Josephson effect in graphene, crossed Andreev reflection, and quantum Hall
studies and Josephson radiation. Moreover, the consortium includes expert theory support from one
of the world’s leading teams in Majorana theory that developed one of the first proposals towards
MFs in graphene.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

Today’s computation relies on classical algorithms, however, quantum computation, a novel way of computing would allow certain things to be computed exponentially faster, or solve problems not possible today. This relies on the special property of quantum bits, qubits, namely that superpositions can be made from them, and that distant qubits can be entangled. A novel way to realize qubits is the so-called topological quantum computation, where the symmetries of the system protect qubits from losing their information.
Majorana fermions are special „particles” which can be the basic building blocks of quantum computation. In this project we seek to engineer and find Majorana fermions in graphene, a single layer of graphite, coupled to superconductors. Graphene is a remarkable material, which has already many applications, and hopefully will serve as an ideal platform for the realization of Majorana fermions.

Rev. Lett és több Nano Letters.
Results in English
The aim of the TopoGraph project was to make steps towards engineering topological superconductivity in graphene-based van der Waals heterostructures. In the Topograph project we developed and investigated the different ingredients: Tunnel probes were engineered and tunnel spectroscopy was performed under non-equilibrium conditions. We also have developed a double-layer graphene system, where we measured superconducting current-phase relation and observed a quantum spin-Hall state at large magnetic fields. This system is one of the smallest magnetometers that exists up to now. The largest effort in the project was to reveal the role and type of spin orbit interaction in TMDC/Graphene heterostructures in different layouts both experimentally and theoretically. We have demonstrated the boosting of spin orbit coupling with pressure and calculated its dependence on the twist angle between the layers. We have measured the current phase-relation in graphene with induced spin orbit coupling. In bilayer graphene, that was encapsulated between WSe2 crystals, an inverted phase was observed and in supercurrent measurements signatures of its topological nature was seen. The project resulted in 2 BSc and 4 MSc thesis and 4 two theses for the Hungarian Scientific Students' Associations competition (TDK). The results have resulted in the publication (or acceptance) of 20 research papers in leading journals, including a Phys. Rev. Lett, and several Nano Letters papers.
