A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

Summary
Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

Our primary goal is to work out methods that are efficient and reliable enough to identify the young stellar objects (YSOs) in the huge amount of time series data collected by present and future observing facilities, like Gaia, ASAS and LSST. Based on known YSOs we can create templates that will serve as training sets for machine learning algorithms. Using these training sets the algorithms identify hyperplanes in the multidimensional data, that can separate the different object types with high confidentiality.
With the sudden brightening (hot spots caused by infalling material, FUor/EXor type phenomena depending on the timescale and variation amplitude) or dimming (extinction of the inhomogeneous disk material) of the systems we can draw conclusions concerning the disk dynamics.
The scientific goal is to (1) develop/improve algorithms to identify young stars, classify their variability types, perform statistical analysis of the variability parameters and connect the results to physics of the disk; (2) discover transient events in large photometric surveys, including Hungarian (Fly’s Eye) and international (Pan-STARRS, Gaia) projects, determine general incidence of YSO eruptions; and (3) perform follow-up observations of the discovered transient events (GINOP), (4) process the new data and perform statistical analysis of the variability of young stars, connect the results to disk properties, determine FUor/EXor incidence.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

What was it about the Sun’s birth environment or its star formation process that determined the final properties of our solar system vs. that of other planetary systems? How and on what timescale did the solar mass build up, and how much gas and dust were left over for planet formation? How rapidly did the high-energy radiation of young stars disperse their gas disks, ending the phase of major planet formation? Eruptive events have a major impact on planet formation, and the early evolution of the central star, but they are rarely observed. The light curve shapes with detailed disk models can unfold the physics and structure of the disks and tell if there was a drop or increase of the accretion rate, also how the density inhomogeneities are distributed in the disks. My research plan aims to develop methods that allows us to significantly increase the number of young stars being observed during different phases of sudden brightness variations.

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

This is the first scientific proposal that plans to use modern data mining techniques and machine learning algorithms in order to identify a large number of YSOs in time series data. The workflows developed by us would be the first applications for the domestic Fly's Eye camera, developed by the Fly's Eye Momentum grant. Also, with the help of data acquired by already running international projects (ASAS, PTF, Pan-STARRS) we would develop applications that could be used to analyse the huge amount of data, will be produced by the Gaia space telescope and the LSST in the near future. Development of the alert systems is essential to catch the unexpected light variations of young stars. The detailed data, collected at the right moment, would mean a huge help in our understanding of the physics of planet formation.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

On a clear night, from a location with low light pollution we can see that the sky is full of stars. In the winter a sharp eye can recognise the fuzzy Orion Nebula with its nursery of stars born "yesterday" in cosmic time - not long after the first humans walked. Close to it one can see the Pleiades star cluster - formed when dinosaurs still roamed Earth. These are just two examples where young stars and their planetary systems are being formed with the possibility of hosting Earth-like planets that can harbour life.
The star and planet formation lasts from several hundreds of thousands up to a few million years, therefore we cannot follow the process from the beginning to the end, only snapshots can be collected. Still, these snapshots provide important information regarding the dynamical and chemical evolution of the protoplanetary disks if they are made in the right time. The more snapshots we can collect the more information we can infer from the unexpected light variations of the young stars, caused by dynamical processes that affect not just the chemistry of the disk, but the mass and location of the resulting planets as well.
The aim of the research project is to efficiently identify those young stars showing sudden brightness changes, to collect new, detailed data on these events, and to make statistical statements regarding the frequency of the mentioned phenomena and their impact on planet formation, and ultimately to learn what are the differences between the analysed systems and the early Solar System.

"Identification of Young Stellar Object candidates in the Gaia DR2 x AllWISE catalogue with machine learning methods" címmel megjelent a Gaia és a WISE űrtávcső fotometriai adatai alapján tervezett publikáció. A tanulmányt 2019-ben fogadták el közlésre (MNRAS, 487, 2522). Első szerző Marton Gábor. A Gaia űrtávcső fotometriai adatai alapján konstruált fénygörbéket elemeztünk azzal a céllal, hogy FU Or és EX Or típusú fiatal csillagok fényességváltozásait azonosítsuk és leírjuk. Azt találtuk, hogy a fotometriai idősorok alapján számított vonNeumann és skewness paraméterek alapján jól elkülöníthetők ezek a számunkra érdekes események a többi fénygörbétől. Az általunk javasolt módszert implementálták a Gaia űrtávcső riasztási rendszerébe. A Gaia18dvy riasztást egy FU Or típusú fiatal csillag okozta, amelyet a riasztást követően megfigyeltünk. Az ebből készülő publikáció megjelent az Astrophysical Journal c. angol nyelvű szaklapban (Szegedi-Elek et al. 2020, ApJ, 899, 130). A projekt befejezésekor folyamatban volt a V555 Ori elnevezésű fiatal csillag analízise, amelyről a publikáció azóta megjelent (Nagy et al. 2021, MNRAS, 504, 185). Kép alapú klasszifikációs teszteket végeztem a Gaia riasztások fénygörbéjén mélytanuló algoritmusok segítségével, és egyéb gépi tanuláson alapuló eredményekkel is összevetettem a klasszifikáció sikerességét. Részt vettem egyéb csillagok kép alapú klasszifikációs módszerének kidolgozásában is (Szklenár et al., 2020, ApJ, 897L, 12).
Results in English
We have prepared the publication based on photometric data from the Gaia and WISE space telescopes, with the title "Identification of Young Stellar Object candidates in the Gaia DR2 x AllWISE catalogue with machine learning methods" The study was accepted in 2019 (MNRAS, 487, 2522). First author is Gábor Marton. We analysed photometric light curves constructed from the Gaia data with the goal to find and describe FU Or and EX Or type young stars. We found that that von Neumann and skewness parameters calculated from the light curve are useful to separate these interesting stars from other types of objects. The proposed method was implemented in the Gaia Alert System. The Gaia18dvy alert was ignited by an FU Or type star which we followed up after the alert. The corresponding study was published in the Astrophysical Journal (Szegedi-Elek et al. 2020, ApJ, 899, 130). By the end of the current project the analysis of the young star V555 Ori was being done, but since then the study was published (Nagy et al. 2021, MNRAS, 504, 185). Image based classification tests were made on the Gaia alert light curves with deep learning algorithms, and the results were compared to that of other machine learning methods. I participated in designing image based classification methods of other types of variable stars (Szklenár et al., 2020, ApJ, 897L, 12).
