magyar összefoglaló
A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?

A kérdés fontossága magának a Wasserstein metrikának a fontosságában rejlik. Valóban, az “Optimal transport” fogalmára jelenleg kiemelkedő nemzetközi figyelem irányul, főleg a metrikus terek geometriájával kapcsolatos kutatások miatt. Kloeckner karakterizálta a véges dimenziós euklideszi terek Borel mértékeinek 2-Wasserstein izometriáit. Célunk Kloeckner eredményeinek kiterjesztése lengyel terekre. Többek közt vizsgálnánk az n-dimenziós euklideszi gömbök felületén élő Borel mértékek, illetve a közös kompakt halmazon tartott Borel mértékek izometria csoportját.

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

A kutatás másik része megőrzési problémákat tárgyal. Általában, megőrzési problémáknak olyan kérdéseket nevezünk, amely egy adott struktúra bizonyos releváns mennyiségeit megőrző leképezéseinek feltérképezésére irányulnak. A kérdésekre kapott válaszok gyakran magára a struktúrára vonatkozóan is hasznos információval szolgálnak. A megőrzési problémákon belül Wasserstein izometriákra vonatkozó, valamint abszolút folytonosságot és szingularitást megőrző problémákat tervezek vizsgálni (számtalan különböző kontextusban).

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

A második problémakör gyűjtőneve “megőrzési problémák”. Általában, megőrzési problémáknak olyan kérdéseket nevezünk, amely egy adott struktúra bizonyos releváns mennyiségeit megőrző leképezéseinek feltérképezésére irányulnak. A kérdésekre kapott válaszok gyakran magára a struktúrára vonatkozóan is hasznos információval szolgálnak.
angol összefoglaló
Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

The proposed research has two main objectives which are interwoven, and are intended to be equally important. Both of them can be considered as natural continuations of my earlier works on the theory of Lebesgue-type decompositions and preserver problems. These objectives are:

(O1) To develop a suitable theory of operator extensions, which is general and nice behaving enough to be a basis of further research concerning Schur complementation and its theoretical consequences in a setting where the underlying structure is not a Hilbert space. In fact, I am going to present a generalization of the famous Krein-von Neumann extension in the context of anti-dual pairs. The most important application is a suitable generalization of the widely researched notion of parallel addition, which can be useful in (O2a).

(O2) To describe and characterize those automorphisms which preserve relevant quantities of the structures in question. Two main issues of this objective are (O2a) to describe absolute continuity- and singularity preserving maps in various structures (our main example will be the cone of representable functionals on an involutive algebra); and (O2b) to characterize distance preserving maps on Borel probability measures with respect to relevant metrics like the Wasserstein metric.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

The proposed research has two main objectives: (O1) and (O2). I want to highlight first the operation called “parallel addition” which is the driving force behind the proposed research. In (O1), obtaining a suitable generalization of this notion is the most important application of our abstract results, in (O2) it can be the most important tool.

In (O1), we are going to generalize several classical operator theoretic results to the context of anti-dual pairs. In the classical theorey the parallel sum and difference can be obtained as minimal solutions of particular block operator completing problems, which is closely related to the problem of finding a positive self-adjoint extension for a particular linear operator. That is why I am going to generalize the widely researched Krein-von Neumann extension. Having such a generalization would be useful by extending for example functionals and operator kernels.

In (O2) we will investigate so called preserver problems. I mention only one particular problem here: characterizing isometries with respect to the Wasserstein metric. The importance of this problem lies in the importance of the metric itself. Indeed, the concept of optimal transportation recently raised a growing interest in links with the geometry of metric spaces. Kloeckner described the general form of 2-Wasserstein isometries on finite dimensional Euclidean space. We are going to extend Kloeckner's results to other Polish spaces like the n-dimensional sphere. Another setting we are interested in is the space of those Borel measures which are supported on a prescribed compact set of a Euclidean space.

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

In general, research in pure mathematics, is unlikely to generate the same level of public interest or interest for industry as research in more applied areas, such as medicine, engineering or ecological research. But abstract mathematical results are extremely useful in other hard sciences like physics. In this particular research, the first objective deals with a generalization of Krein-von Neumann extension.

The wide-range applicability of the classical extension technique in operator theory suggests that our generalization may be an effective tool to attack several problems in several settings, including for example the theory of distributions and the theory of operator kernels. The primary goal of this objective is to obtain both algebraic and topological conditions to guarantee that A suboperator between spaces that are in anti-duality admits a weakly continuous extension. The problem of extending suboperators between different Hilbert spaces goes back to Halmos. Even in that mild Hilbert space generalization, the loss is significant: there is no identity operator, operators cannot be multiplied, and so on. We are going to attack and solve Halmos’ problem in a more general context. Shortly speaking, our main task here is to develop a general operator extension theory, which overcomes not only the lack of Hilbert space structure, but also the lack of a normable topology. We expect that this generalization will be a useful tool by extending many other important objects in functional analysis.

The second objective deals with various preserver problems. Generally speaking, preserver problems concern the question of describing the form of such transformations of a given structure that preserve a relevant relation among the elements. To describe the preservers of a system is of particular importance, in fact, in many cases the corresponding result provides important information on the morphisms of the underlying structure. Two main issues of this objective are (O2a) to describe absolute continuity- and singularity preserving maps in various structures and (O2b) to characterize distance preserving maps on Borel probability measures with respect to relevant metrics like the Wasserstein metric.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

This research concerns two overlapping areas of pure mathematics, or more specifically: functional analysis. The first problem I am going to deal with is extendibility of nice behaving maps in a very general context. Having such a result can be useful in various situations when the objects under considerations are not “everywhere defined” which means that we have only partial information about the object. The second family of problems is called generally “preserver problems”. The task here is to understand the form of such transformations of a given structure that preserve a relevant relation among the elements. To describe the preservers of a system is of particular importance, in fact, in many cases the corresponding result provides important information about the structure itself.

A projekt során elért eredményekből 11 dolgozat született.
Our work was devoted to the study of (a) operator extensions on anti-dual pairs and (b) distance preserving maps on Wasserstein spaces. Our main aim in (a) was to develop a general operator extension theory, which overcomes not only the lack of a Hilbert space structure but also the lack of a normable topology. The concept of anti-duality is suitable to construct extensions in a natural way and is still general enough to cover numerous important areas where the Hilbert space theory cannot be applied. To illustrate the applicability of the abstract results, we showed (among others) that extensions of functionals can be governed by their induced operators. In (b) we investigated isometries of Wasserstein spaces built on different structures: graphs, Hilbert spaces, high-dimensional spheres and tori, etc. Our main goal was to determine whether these groups are rigid or not. The results obtained in the course of the project were formulated in 11 papers. To disseminate these results, I gave several talks at prominent institutes like RIMS Kyoto, UW Madison, and Lomonosov MSU. I not only participated in conferences but I was also involved in the organization of workshops and seminars. Finally, I mention that I also wrote several articles in Hungarian for the "What is..." section of the electronic mathematical magazine of the János Bolyai Mathematical Society. These papers aimed to introduce and popularize the subject to the general audience.
