magyar összefoglaló
A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

A tudomány egyik frontvonala az ultragyors folyamatok vizsgálata. Jelenleg attoszekundumos impulzusokkal vizsgálják a leggyorsabb folyamatokat.
A fő cél a pályázat keretein belül a kísérleti elrendezés numerikus megtervezése, mely eredménye megalapozza egy jövőbeli egyciklusú attoszekundumos impulzus megvalósulását (a MAX IV gyorsítóban Svédországban).

A kitűzött céljaim:
1. A Berlinben üzemelő DESY PITZ gyorsító munkatársaival együttműködve (Mikhail Krasilnikov, Prach Boonpornprasert) numerikus programok segítségével fogom szimulálni és vizsgálni az elektroncsomó pályáját az elektrongyorsító teljes hosszán.
2. Numerikus szimulációkkal megtervezzük a moduláló undulátort, melynek megtervezésében együttműködő partner az Uppsala-i egyetem (Georgii Shamuilov).

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?
Ebben a részben írja le röviden, hogy mi a kutatás segítségével megválaszolni kívánt probléma, mi a kutatás kiinduló hipotézise, milyen kérdéseket válaszolnak meg a kísérletek.

A célom a projekt során, hogy numerikus szimulációimmal megtervezzem és megvizsgáljam a jövőbeli proof-of-principle kísérletet, mellyel először lehet majd előállítani a világon egyciklusú undulátor sugárzást (a DESY PITZ gyorsítójában), megalapozva egy jövőbeli attoszekundumos impulzust előállító kísérletet (a MAX IV gyorsítóban).
A proof-of-principle kísérlet megtervezése és vizsgálata során több kérdésre is választ fogunk kapni:
3. A THz-es impulzus fókuszálása milyen elrendezésben valósítható meg? Mekkora a legkisebb foltméret, ami elérhető? Mennyire torzulhat az impulzus az erős fókuszálás következtében?
4. A chicane mentén keletkező szinkrotron sugárzásnak mekkora a hatása a kialakult elektroncsomóra?
5. Mekkora a keletkező sugárzás energiája?
6. Mekkora a kialakuló sugárzás foltmérete? Mennyire divergál az impulzus?
7. A CEP-nek mekkora a fluktuációja?
8.Az impulzus CEP-je mennyire változik az optikai tengelytől távolodva?
9. Az eredmények fényében milyen hatékonyság várható az attoszekundumos tartományban?

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

One of the front lines of science is the investigation of ultra-fast processes. At present attosecond pulses are used for studying the fastest processes. However, the generation technology of carrier-envelope phase controlled (CEP) few cycle pulses has not been developed yet.
Recently, we proposed a solution of the problem[1] which is based on the production of nano-size relativistic electron bunches and radiation emitted by them in an undulator [1-2].A proof-of-principle experiment of our suggested setup is planned at the electron accelerator of DESY PITZ Berlin within the framework of an international collaboration.
The main goal of my proposal is to design this experimental layout by numerical simulations. The result of the proof-of-principle experiment can pave the way for the first CEP controlled single-cycle attosecond pulse generation (MAX IV accelerator in Sweden).
My goals within the project are:
1. In collaboration with the colleagues of the DESY PITZ accelerator (Mikhail Krasilnikov, Prach Boonpornprasert) will study the trajectory of electrons on the entire length of the accelerator.
2. We will design the modulator undulator in close collaboration with Uppsala University (Georgii Shamuilov).
3. We also study the interaction between the THz pulse and the electron bunch with the colleagues of the MTA-PTE High Intensity THz Research Group (János Hebling, Gábor Almási).
4. We will design the chicane and radiator undulator and study the single-cycle radiation generation with the colleagues of Uppsala University (Alan Mak, Vitaliy Goryashko).

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

The goal of my proposal is to design and study the proof-of-principle experiment with numerical simulations, which could generate the first single-cycle undulator radiation in the world (DESY's PITZ accelerator). These results could serve as a basis of a future experiment to generate single-cycle attosecond pulses (MAX IV accelerator).
During the examination of the proof-of-principle experiment, we will answer several questions:
1. What can be the smallest transversal size of the electron beam at the end of the linear accelerator? What is the optimal transversal size of the beam to achieve the highest modulation efficiency?
2. How much difference is between the magnetic field of the real undulator and the idealized undulator? What is the effect of this on the electron path?
3. How strong THz focusing can be achieved? What is the smallest spot size? How does the pulse shape deform due to the strong focusing?
4. What is the effect of the synchrotron radiation generated by the chicane on the produced electron bunch?
5. What is the energy of the generated radiation?
6. How large is the spot size of the generated radiation? How large is the divergence of the beam?
7. How large is the fluctuation of the CEP of the generated pulse?
8. How does the CEP of the pulse change for off-axis points?
9. In the light of the results, what efficiency is expected in the attosecond range?

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

Attosecond pulses make possible to explore and investigate atomic level phenomenon and ultrafast dynamics in the physical, chemical and biological processes.
However, a specially-controlled pulse, which has few cycles and its carrier-envelope phase (CEP) is controlled, could not be produced yet by either undulator radiation or high harmonic generation. The main advantage of these pulses is that, using such CEP stable pulses, we can complete the most precise experiments.
In 2014 we made a suggestion for a set up to produce such special attosecond pulses. In 2017 a collaboration was formed with the participation of nine research groups (including us) from 6 countries with the common goal of producing few cycle attosecond pulses.
The aim of the group is to verify experimentally the results of the calculations (initially in the THz range), which will be the basis of the future attempt in attosecond pulse generation. A long-term cooperation and the generation of the first single-cycle and later the first attosecond pulse will bring the revolutionary change in the attosecond and free electron laser community too.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

The high-energy light pulses generated by free-electron lasers play a significant role in many disciplines, including biology, chemistry and physics. The generated laser pulses have high energy (mJ level), however their pulse duration exceeds hundreds of cycles, which restricts their experimental applicability. Therefore, the free electron laser community tries to find a way to reduce the amount of cycles. In 2014 we verified with numerical calculations the possibility of generating few (even one) cycle pulses with a special set up. We are planning to implement a test experiment in the DESY PITZ electron accelerator in Germany within an international collaboration of 9 research teams from 6 countries. The test experiment will be the first milestone of our long-term collaboration. The common goal is to produce single-cycle and ultrafast i.e. attosecond pulses (in the MAX IV electron accelerator in Sweden), which will allow atomic level examinations in the future.
The main goal of our proposal is to design and investigate the experimental setup in DESY PITZ by numerical simulations, which will produce the first single-cycle pulse in the world by undulator radiation.

During the project, we examined an alternative electron accelerator and an electron accelerator operating at radio frequency. First, we proposed a new type of semiconductor and lithium niobate-based terahertz sources, with which, according to numerical simulations, the MV/cm field strength required for particle manipulation can be achieved. Next, we proposed and numerically investigated a particle accelerator setup based on terahertz pulses suitable for accelerating and compressing electron bunches. Finally, we proposed a special arrangement based on a linear electron accelerator, with which waveform and carrier-envelope phase-controlled attosecond pulses can be produced based on our numerical simulation.
