A modellépítéshez a természeti és társadalmi-gazdasági körülményekre vonatkozó nagy mennyiségű adatot rendeztünk GIS alapú adatbázisba (pl. csapadék, talajok fizikai összetétele, népesség, területhasználat, szennyvíztisztítás stb.).

Unlike in standing waters, there is no direct link between nutrient supply and algal biomass in river networks, because the relationship is distorted by unidirectional flow and the topology of river network (location of confluences, reservoirs, large point sources) that determines water residence time. These complex relationships can only be explored by studying the whole river network, which can be achieved by developing catchment scale eutrophication models. Our project aimed at developing and applying such models to 5 Hungarian and 3 Turkish rivers. To build the models, a large amount of data was collected and organized in a GIS-based database on natural and socio-economic conditions (e.g. precipitation, soil physical composition, population, land use, wastewater treatment, etc.). The models were validated using long-term average discharge and chlorophyll concentration data. Field measurements were also carried out to qualitatively verify the models. An attempt was made to use satellite data, but this is not yet feasible in medium and small rivers, given the current spatial resolution of earth observation satellites. By further simplifying the model applied to the study rivers, we have developed a network eutrophication model that can be used in data-poor environments and even at a continental scale. With the latter model, a case study has been carried out for the Danube basin and steps have been taken to put the model into practice.
