Projektünknek két fő, egymással összefüggő kutatási iránya volt. Az első az őszinte kommunikáció feltételeinek a vizsgálata, a második a pletyka őszinteségének és a pletyka reputációs rendszerekben betöltött szerepének a vizsgálata. A kutatás első irányában elméletileg és kísérletileg is meg tudtuk mutatni, hogy az őszinteséget a feltételtől függő kompromisszumok (trade-off) és nem az egyensúlyi költség tartják fenn. Ez azt jelenti, hogy az őszinte jelzéseknek nem kell költségesnek lenniük az őszinte egyensúly mellett. Kiszámoltuk azokat a feltételeket, amikor ezek a fitnesz-kölcsönhatások elősegítheti az őszinte jelzést egy Bizalom játékban. Meg tudtuk azonban mutatni, hogy a fitnesz kölcsönös függése elősegítheti az őszinte pletykálást is. A második vizsgálati vonalon eredményeink azt mutatják, hogy a hírnévért folytatott intenzív verseny jobban elősegíti az együttműködést, mint a pletykák vagy a társadalmi kötődések keresztellenőrzése. Továbbá be tudtuk mutatni, hogy a hírnévstratégián alapuló perspektíva váltás (a pletykákon keresztül) elősegítheti az együttműködést a Fogoly dilemmában. Azt találtuk, hogy a pletykát mint eszközt gyakrabban használják különböző vélemények közötti közvetítésre, ahelyett, hogy a közös ellenséget támadnák vele. Végül, de nem utolsósorban, a szegregált csoportok pletykáit vizsgálva azt látjuk, hogy a pletyka gyakoribb, ha a küldő és a fogadó ugyanannak a csoportnak a tagja, és pozitívabb a csoporton belüli pletyka, mint a csoporton kívüli célpontokról szóló. A bróker (csoportok közötti közvetítő) pozícióban lévő egyének nagyobb valószínűséggel a negatív pletykák küldői és célpontjai.
Results in English
The project had two main lines of investigation: the first about the general conditions of honest signalling, the second about the role of gossip in maintaining reputation systems, thus promoting cooperation, in humans. In the first line of research we were able to show both theoretically and experimentally that honesty is maintained by condition-dependent trade-offs and not by equilibrium cost. That is honest signals need not be costly at the honest equilibrium. We were able to show that fitness interdependence between individuals can introduce the trade-offs necessary to maintain honest signalling. We calculated the conditions when such fitness interdependence can promote honest signalling in a Trust game. We were able to show that fitness interdependence can promote honest gossip as well. Our the second line of investigation shows range of interesting effect. First of all, our results show that intense competition for reputation promotes cooperation more than cross-checking of gossip or social bonding. Furthermore, we were able to show that a perspective taking reputational strategy (through gossip) can promote cooperation in the Prisoners’ dilemma. We found that gossip as a tool is more frequently used to negotiate differing opinions instead of attacking a shared enemy. Last but not least, investigating gossip in disconnected groups we found more gossip when the sender and receiver are part of the same group and more positive gossip about in-group rather than out-group targets. Individuals in broker positions (links between groups) are more likely the senders and targets of negative gossip.
