A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

A kiülepedés ütemét a szökési ráta számszerűsíti. A kutatásban a kaotikus jellemzők numerikus vizsgálatát tervezzük elvégezni globális skálán, a kaotikus sodródás szerepét a légkörbe juttatott részecskék élettartamával, szökési rátájával, valamint részecskeeloszlás időbeli fejlődésével jellemezve. A szimulációk segítségével képet kaphatunk a légkörbe juttatandó részecskék terjedése során fellépő lehetséges kockázati tényezőkről is. A dinamikai rendszerek szempontjából a kutatás a légköri sodródás jellemzőinek részletesebb megismerését teszi lehetővé.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?
Ebben a részben írja le röviden, hogy mi a kutatás segítségével megválaszolni kívánt probléma, mi a kutatás kiinduló hipotézise, milyen kérdéseket válaszolnak meg a kísérletek.

A kutatás célja annak az eddig még részleteiben nem vizsgált kérdésnek a felderítése, hogy a légköri sodródás kaotikus természete hogyan befolyásolja olyan részecskék szétterjedését, eloszlását és tartózkodási idejét, amelyeket a globális felmelegedés ellensúlyozására, geoengineering céljából juttatnának a légkörbe, célszerűen a sztratoszférába. A kutatás során elemezzük, hogyan függ a kibocsátás helyétől, magasságától és időpontjától a részecskék eloszlása, ennek időbeli fejlődése. Továbbá felderítjük, hogy a légkörbe juttatott részecskék jellemző élettartama és élettartam-eloszlása hogyan függ a részecskék méretétől; a részecskék légkörből való kikerülésének gyorsaságát számszerűsítő szökési ráta hogyan függ a kibocsátás időpontjától, magasságától és a részecskék tulajdonságaitól; hol kell a részecskéket kibocsátani ahhoz, hogy a leggyorsabban fedjék le a Földet homogén eloszlásban vagy az éghajlatszabályozás szempontjából a legkedvezőbb eloszlásban; hogyan lehetséges optimalizálni a kibocsátás éghajlati hatását különböző helyeken, különböző mennyiségben egyszerre a légkörbe juttatott részecskékkel; léteznek-e olyan helyek, ahol a kibocsátott részecskék áramlási okokból hosszú időre megrekedhetnek, felhalmozódhatnak; milyen időközönként érdemes a részecskéket kibocsátani, hogy a megfelelő mennyiségű részecskét és a legkedvezőbb eloszlást fenntarthassuk. Az éghajlatváltozás hatásának felderítése érdekében elemezzük továbbá ezen tulajdonságok évtizedes változását is. Ebből a célból a terjedési szimulációkhoz az elmúlt évtizedek reanalízis meteorológiai adatait, illetve egy korszerű éghajlati modell sokasági éghajlati realizációit is használni tervezzük.

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

Az utóbbi években a „geoengineering”, a globális felmelegedés ellensúlyozását célzó technológiák kérdésköre egyre népszerűbbé vált, bár a különböző módszerek megítélése vitatott. Azonban tömeggel rendelkező részecskék véges időn belül kikerülnek légkörből még kémiai reakciók hiányában is, mivel a nehézségi erő hatására átlagosan lefelé haladnak. A kiülepedés ütemét a szökési ráta számszerűsíti. Ebből a célból numerikus szimulációkat tervezünk futtatni, vizsgálva a kibocsátott részecskék élettartamát, szökési rátáját és a részecskék földrajzi eloszlásának időbeli fejlődését a légkörben. A fő célunk annak felderítése, hogy az előbbi mennyiségek hogyan függnek a kibocsátás földrajzi helyétől és időpontjától, milyen tartományokban, milyen magasságokba, milyen időközönként érdemes részecskéket juttatni a légkörbe a hatásuk optimalizálása érdekében. A szimulációk képet adhatnak a légkörbe juttatandó részecskék terjedése során fellépő lehetséges kockázati tényezőkről is.

Summary
Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

Nowadays, the idea of “geoengineering”, i.e., the reduction of global warming, has come under increasing consideration. One of the main technologies is solar radiation management, which aims to introduce reflective material into the atmosphere in order to scatter some part of the sunlight back to space. To our knowledge, one of the aspects that has not come into the focus of interest yet is what the role of the chaotic nature of the advection is in the spread and distribution of the emitted materials. In three-dimensional flows, as is the case for the atmosphere, the advected particles typically exhibit chaotic behavior: initially nearby particles diverge within short time, their motion is irregular, and they trace out complicated but well-organized (fractal) structures. It is also worth noting that small aerosol particles are removed from the atmosphere within a finite time even in the lack of chemical reactions, because due to gravity they move downwards on average. The number of particles not yet deposited decays exponentially after a while characteristic to the so-called transient chaos, and the escape rate describes the rapidity of the removal process. In this project, we propose the numerical investigation of the chaotic properties on a global scale characterizing the role of chaotic advection by the injected particles’ lifetime and escape rate, and by the time evolution of the particle distribution over the globe. Carrying out numerical simulations, we can also reveal potential risks of particle injection in the atmosphere. From a dynamical systems point of view the research supports a better understanding of the atmospheric advection processes.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

The aim of the research is to uncover the question, not studied in detail for the time being, how the chaotic nature of atmospheric advection processes influences the spread, distribution and residence time of particles injected in the atmosphere, preferably in the stratosphere, for geoengineering purposes to counteract the global warming. We would like to analyze in detail how the particle distribution in the atmosphere and its time evolution depend on the location, altitude and time of the emission. We intend to explore what the typical lifetime and the lifetime distribution of the injected particles are depending on the particles’ size; how the escape rate characterizing the speed of the particles’ removal process on the surface depend on the time and altitude of the particle injection and on the particles’ properties; where the particles should be released to cover the Earth homogeneously or in the most preferable distribution for climate control within the shortest time period; whether we can optimize the effect of the release by emitting different amount of material at different locations simultaneously; whether there are regions where the emitted reflective material is trapped and accumulated due to transport barriers; and by which frequency the particles should be released to maintain the preferable amount and the most favorable geographical distribution of the materials in the atmosphere. We will also focus on how these features change over decades to study the impact of climate change. For this purpose, meteorological reanalysis data of the past decades and an ensemble of climate realizations of a state-of-the-art climate model will be used.

What is the significance of the research?

In recent years the idea of geoengineering to counteract the global warming has become more and more popular, however, the judgement of the different methods is controversial. Solar radiation management technologies attempt to work out methods to modify the amount of the incidence and absorption of incoming solar radiation by blocking or reflecting some portion of the sunlight providing cooling effect. The chaotic nature of the atmospheric advection has been studied for a long time, and has been successfully applied, e.g., to investigate the local mixing, to study the zonal stratospheric jet and transport barriers. Our previous studies showed that the length of initially small pollutant clouds grows in an exponential manner in time, and the stretching rate corresponds to a measure of chaotic dynamics. Pollutant clouds are advected in a filamentary, folded, fractal structure, covering a hemisphere within some weeks. Nevertheless, particles with mass leave the atmosphere within a finite time even in the lack of chemical reactions, because due to gravity they move downwards on average. The number of particles not yet deposited from the atmosphere decays exponentially after a while, which is characteristic to the so-called transient chaos, and the speed of the removal process is characterized by the so-called escape rate. In recent years, numerous studies analyzed the climatic effects of stratospheric injections (e.g., Niemeier & Timmreck, 2015; Tilmes et al., 2018). In this project, we intend to utilize the theory of chaotic advection to characterize the impact of the injected particles, which, to our knowledge, has not been studied in detail for the time being. To this end, we carry out numerical simulations analyzing the injected particles’ lifetime and escape rate, and the time evolution of the particle distribution over the globe. Our main scientific aim is to study how these quantities depend on the geographical location and time of the emission, and at which regions, at which altitudes and what times and by which frequency are worth injecting the particles to optimize their effects. Numerical simulations can also reveal the potential risks of particle injection into the atmosphere.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

Nowadays, the idea of “geoengineering”, i.e., the reduction of global warming, has come under increasing consideration; however, the judgement of the different methods is controversial. Solar radiation management aims to introduce reflective material into the atmosphere to scatter some part of the sunlight back to space. The atmospheric advection of injected particles shows the signatures of chaos: they do not disperse like dye blobs on clothes, rather an initially compact particle cloud becomes soon strongly stretched, while becoming filamentary and folded. Initially nearby particles diverge within short time and they trace out complicated but well-organized structures, covering a hemisphere within a few weeks. Nevertheless, particles with mass are removed from the atmosphere within a finite time even in the lack of chemical reactions, because due to gravity they move downwards on average. This process can be characterized by the particles’ lifetime and by the so-called escape rate, which quantifies the rapidity of the removal. In this project, we propose the numerical investigation of the role of the chaotic nature of advection in the geoengineering effect of particles, analyzing the injected particles’ lifetime and escape rate, and the time evolution of the particle distribution over the globe. Our main scientific target is to study how these quantities depend on the geographical location and time of the emission, and at which regions, at which altitudes and what times and by which frequency are worth injecting the particles to optimize their effects. Numerical simulations can also reveal the potential risks of particle injection in the atmosphere.
