Taiwan és a szárazföldi Kína kapcsolatának kérdésköre Kelet-Ázsia kutatásának egyik legérzékenyebb, legátpolitizáltabb témája. A múltbeli folyamatok vizsgálata is számos mai problémát vet fel. A források tanúsága szerint a sziget a 17. sz.-ig nem volt a kínai birodalom része. A kínai világ látókörébe Taiwan a hollandok és a Zhengek uralmával került, amelyet a század végén a mandzsu dinasztia követett. E korra nyúlnak vissza Taiwan rendkívül bonyolult etnikai, nyelvi, kulturális viszonyai. A 17. sz. végétől különböző hegyvidéki és síkvidéki bennszülött törzsek, illetve eltérő helyekről származó han bevándorlók együttélése és konfliktusai jellemezték a szigetet. A 17–19. sz. között Taiwan sikeresen integrálódott a kínai gazdaságba, ezután pedig Japán egyik fontos ellátója lett, s fejlődése elszakadt Kínáétól. 1949 után a nyelvi összetétel újra megváltozott, s a kialakulóban lévő taiwani identitást a Taiwanról kiinduló újraegyesítés eszméje váltotta fel. Mindeközben a Kínai Népköztársaság nem mondott le Taiwanról, s a két entitás kérdése a globális politika fókuszába került. Az 1970-es évek végétől a KNK gyors gazdasági fejlődése, illetve Taiwan demokratizálódása új helyzetet teremtett, felerősítve egyrészt a „nagy Kína” megteremtésére irányuló törekvéseket, másrészt az önálló taiwani identitás kialakulását. Ugyanakkor a két entitás gazdaságilag összeforrt, s a kutatók feltételezése szerint a békés újraegyesítésre előbb-utóbb sor fog kerülni.

The relations between Taiwan and Mainland China is one of the most sensitive questions of the region. Even the study of the past raise a number of current questions. According to primary sources, the island has not been a part of China before the 17th century. It appeared on the horizon of the Chinese when the Dutch and the Zhengs occupied it, which was followed by the Manchu conquest. The complicated ethnic, linguistic and cultural landscape of the island originates in these times. From the end of the 17th century, Taiwan’s development was characterized by the coexistence and conflicts of different aboriginal tribes, and Han immigrants from different places of origin. Between the 17–19th century, Taiwan was integrated in the Chinese economy, but after this it became a colony of Japan, and its development was separated from that of China. After 1949, linguistic relations changed again, and the nascent Taiwanese identity was replaced by the idea of reunification starting from Taiwan. The People’s Republic insisted on its claims on Taiwan, and the relationship of the two entities became a focal point of global politics. Since the end of the 1970’s, the rapid development of the PRC, and the democratization of Taiwan created a new situation. Both the aspirations for a “Greater China”, and the evolvement of a distinct Taiwanese identity gained new impetus. However, the researchers assume that sooner or later peaceful unification will take place.
