Final report

A támogatott időszakban folytattam a komputer-algebrai témájú kutatásokat is.

In collaboration with Praeger (Perth) and Baddeley (formerly Leicester) we continued our work to describe the structure of permutation groups that act on cartesian products. We determined the structure of those groups that act transitively on a product structure, and characterized those that are intransitive. I continued the investigation of a problem that was already treated in my PhD thesis, namely the problem of bounding the order of a finite p-group in terms of the derived length. I managed to prove a new lower bound. I participated in some research in problems on computational algebra. Willem de Graaf and I studied the isomorphism problem for small-dimensional Lie algebras and we have written a package for the computational algebra system GAP. In a joint work with Praeger and Scott Murray (Sydney) we continued our work on the rewriting problem for black-box sporadic groups and linear groups. I also collaborated with Hendrik Van Maldeghem, John Bamberg (Ghent) and Tim Penttila on several problems related to generalized polygons. We proved that a primitive automorphism group of a generalized hexagon or octagon must be an almost simple group, and we characterized those generalized quadrangles that admit an elation group with order p^5.
