Summary in Hungarian
A tervezett kutatás előzményei és okai: 1. A Kapos és Koppány folyók völgyére, valamint a Duna Kalocsától délre eső szakaszára már Kalicz N. felhívta a figyelmet, aki a Kr. e. 6 évezredi alakuló újkőkor fontos lelőhelyeit találta meg itt. Helyi lakosságnak ugyanakkor nem lelte nyomát. 2. 3. Marton T. a Kapos-völgy két lelőhelyén is azonosított középső kőkori eszközöket. 4. A Duna-parti Fajsz-Garadomb és Fajsz-Kovácshalom lelőhelyeken Bánffy Eszter és munkatársai elővizsgálatokat végzett, és gazdag korai és középső újkőkori telepek nyomát találta. A lelőhelyeket végül 2004-ben sikerült a KÖH segítségével védetté nyilvánítani.

Summary
The reason of the planned research lies in he fact that the region to be investigated belongs to the key areas of the neolithic transition. Traces of local late mesolithic foragers have been identified in the course of environmental analyses, as well as in the course of the similar work in Western Transdnubia (E. Bánffy, 2004). T. Marton has now found verified mesolithic tools in the Kapos valley.

As to the other factors, the early Balkan immigrants played a decisive role in the formation of the food productive society, their impacts are immense, e.g. in the two twin-sites involved in the program: Fajsz-Garadomb and Fajsz-Kovácshalom.

With the help of comparative studies concerning late mesolithic, early Balkan groups and their participation in the early neolithic Linear Pottery culture, which spread from Transdanubia to the Paris Basin, we could answer a series of questions about when and how these processes happened: what were the roots of a civilisation that defined the prehistory of Central Europe for two millennia. The Kapos-Koppány and the Danube valley is crucial in solving this problem.

Final report

Results in English
The research program targeted to learn about the beginnings of sedentary life in a region that has been supposed to play a crucial role in the transition of neolithic genetic and cultural impacts from the Northern Balkans towards Central Europe. This area lies along both Danube banks in Southern Hungary, as well as adjacent hilly areas in Southern Transdanubia. Our work concentrated on three major questions: to late mesolithic, early and middle neolithic settlement patterns. Thus, field work was done at the mesolithic site Regöly, also, surveys and the proceeding of a Körös site at the left Danube banks and a larger excavation at Fajsz, a site of the Körös, LBK and Sopot cultures. According to the first results, major currents can be detected coming from the South, and probably mingling with local groups. 1. Starcevo occupation and interaction with local late mesolithic foragers, as well as a South Eastern group of the Körös culture, reaching the Danubian alluvial land; 2. At the time of LBK phases a fairly strong and pure Vinca impact; 3. At the advent of the Carpathian Late Neolithic, the Sopot culture appears in Transdanubia. According to our present knowledge, in its clearest form along the Danube, differing from those groups that crossed the Drava river, in S and SW-Transdanubia. The Sopot impact must have played a crucial role in the transformation of late LBK groups into the Lengyel culture, spreading on a vast region in Central Europe.
