Summary
At the moment there is a lack of information on the blue stain fungi species carried by different phloeophagous insect species (e.g. bark beetles, weevils, jewel beetles and long horned beetles) living on dead or dying coniferous trees in the Hungarian forests. It is necessary to gain more adequate knowledge on these organisms, which help the insect species to beat the resistance of the host tree.
Main objective of the proposed research activity is to determine the significance of blue stain fungi in the beetles – fungi – host tree associations using different field- (trap trees) and labor experiments (species determination, establishment of stock culture). We are also planning to use modern, molecular genetic methods to identify the different fungal species.
This kind of research work is totally new for Hungary, which may allow us to acquire new, remarkable results, which can be presented also at the international level.

Final report

Results in English
The following blue stain fungi have been identified during our investigation on the three main Hungarian coniferous tree species: Norway spruce (Picea abies): Ceratocystis polonica, Ophiostoma ainoae, Ophiostoma bicolor, Ophiostoma piceae, Grosmannia piceaperda, Grosmannia penicillata, Graphium fimbriisporum. All of these species – except of Ophiostoma piceae – are new reports for Hungary. Scotch pine (Pinus silvestris): Ceratocystis polonica, Ceratocystis coerulescens, Ophiostoma brunneo-ciliatum, Ophiostoma canum, Ophiostoma minus, Ophiostoma picea, Ophiostoma piliferum, Graphium pseudormiticum. All of hese species – except of Ophiostoma piceae – are new reports for Hungary. Black pine (Pinus nigra): The investigations are still running, however we were able to isolate only Sphaeropsis sapinea from the selected samples.
