Summary
Joining the European Union was a principal task and challenge not only on the governmental and societal level but also to the traditional churches. Churches as bearers of tradition and institutions of acculturation can contribute to the success of the eastern enlargement of the European Union to a great extent; but they might as well hinder successful integration. The number of believers who consider themselves or their church losers or the religious values at stake is relatively high.
The objective of the current research is to identify how the believers of major churches judge their becoming a member of the European Union and what role they attribute to churches in the united Europe. Answering these questions depend on the self-definition of the given churches and their relation to modern societies, which, according to surveys in the field of sociology of religion can be considered more or less secular in Central and Eastern Europe. This is why the current study examines social judgement of the churches with special regard to their social role, forms and content of their communication within society. As for the other perspective, our team plans to explore how churches think about contemporary society and what fields they identify as domains of possible co-operation with society and state.

Final report

Results in Hungarian
A konferencián összesen 12 ország következő kutatói számoltak be kutatásukról: Botos Katalin (PPKE), D'Agostino Federico (Róma), Faltin Lucia (CJCR Cambridge), Foret François (Brüsszel), Galatik Michael (Bécs), George Wilkes (St. Edmund College, Cambridge), Hermann Judit (CJCR, Cambridge), Herrmann Peter (Cork/Írország és Kuopio/Finnország), Illyés Szabolcs (SZTE), Knoll Reinhold (Bécs), Korpics Márta (PTE), Kuburic Zorica (Újvidék), Máté-Tóth András (SZTE), Mortensen Viggo (Aarhus), Nagy Endre (SE), Jávor Benedek (PPKE), P. Szilczl Dóra (PPKE), Pickel Gert (Lipcse), Rasmusson Arne (Umea), Ricceri Marco (EURISPES, Róma), Torres Gutierrez Alejandro (Navarra), Weiss Johannes (Kassel), Wildmann János (PTE).
