Kutatásunkban elsősorban a metastabil folyadékokban fellépő fázisátalakulásokat szeretnénk kísérletileg, analitikusan, illetve numerikusan vizsgálni.
angol összefoglaló
The full understanding of the behaviour of liquids cannot be reached by the study of their stable states. The metastable liquids are more sensitive for perturbations, therefore they can provide "deeper" insight into the molecular interactions. The sudden phase transitions under metastable conditions can be especially interesting, not only from a theoretical point of view but also their ability to cause serious accidents (like explosive boiling). Even when the phase transition affect only the minor part of the liquid, the physical-chemical behaviours (like specific heat or viscosity) of the new two-phase system can be changed drastically. The main focus of our studies is the detailed study of phase transitions in metastable liquids using numerical, analytical and experimental methods.

A folyadékok tulajdonságai nem érthetők meg teljes egészében, ha csak a stabil stabil állapotukat vizsgáljuk, ezért tűztük ki célul a metastabil folyadékok vizsgálatát. Leginkább a negatív nyomás hatására létrejövő metastabilitással foglalkoztunk. A négy év alatt különféle egy- és többkomponensű folyadékok stabilitási és nukleációs határait vizsgáltuk. Kidolgoztunk egy módszert, amellyel a spinodális határ mérhető mennyiségekből számítható. Kiterjesztettük a stabilitási határokat egyre rendezettebb rendszerekre (folyadékok, üvegek, folyadékkristályok, szilárd anyagok). Megvizsgáltunk néhány, rendezett rendszereknél időnként előforduló virtuális stabilitás-sértést (negatív alacsony dimenziójú kompresszibilitások, negatív Poisson-állandó). Az általunk vizsgált tiszta folyadékok (hélium 3 és 4, argon, széndioxid, víz, higany, alkánok) mellett a természetben előforduló, komplex folyadékokat is vizsgáltunk (olajok, talajvíz, iszap, növényi nedvek); ezek is gyakran kerülhetnek metastabil állapotba, akár a saját környezetükben is. Bár szuperkritikus állapotban nem létezik metastabilitás, létezik egy ú.n. pszeudokritikus állapot, amelyben a szuperkritikus fluidum hasonló viselkedést mutat, mint metastabil állapotban. Szuperkritikus vízre végeztünk számításokat; leginkább arra vonatkozólag, hogy bizonyos ipari felhasználásokat mennyire befolyásolhatnak ezek az. A kutatási tervben 8-16 cikket terveztünk; eddig 15 folyóirat-cikk és további 8 konferencia-cikk jelent meg a témában. Sajnos további OTKA támogatást a téma folytatására nem kaptunk, így a kutatás további sorsa kétséges.
kutatási eredmények (angolul)
Studying the liquids only in their stable state is usually not enough, therefore our aim was to extend these studies to the metastable range. The main subject of our research was the metastability generated by negative pressure. During the last years the stability and nucleation limit of various pure and multicomponent mixtures have been studied. We developed a method to estimate the stability limit, using measurable interfacial properties. The stability criteria have been extended from liquid to more ordered systems (glasses, liquid crystals and solids). Some of the virtual stability criteria violation was studied too (negative low-dimension compressibility, negative Poisson-ratio). Several pure liquids (Helium3 and 4, carbon dioxide, Argon, water, Mercury, alkanes) and several complex natural liquids (oils, ground water, mud, xylem) was studied; the latter ones can reach metastable conditions in their natural occurrence. Metastability does not exist in the supercritical fluid state but one can find a so-called pseudocritical region, where the properties of the these fluids are close to the metastable ones. We performed several calculations on supercritical water, with special focus on the effect of pseudocriticality on industrial applicability. In the original research plan, 8-16 publications were planned; up to now we have 15 papers in various journals and 8 others in proceedings. The future of this research is questionable, due to the lack of further OTKA support.
