Summary in Hungarian
Célunk, hogy kiterjesszük és teszteljük a mutualista kölcsönhatásokat fenntartó mechanizmusok elméletét.
(1) A közgazdaságtanból ismert szerződés-elméletetet kívánjuk alkalmazni a mutualista kölcsönhatások leírására.
(2) Hangya-növény és plazmid-baktérium rendszerekben tesztelni kívánjuk az általunk kifejlesztendő térbeli játékelméleti modelleket.
Munkánk várhatóan segít felfedni a mutualista kölcsönhatásokat fenntartó mechanizmusokat. Az általunk vizsgált konkrét kérdések a következők:
Magyarázható-e néhány általános érvényű mechanizmussal a fajok közötti kooperáció? Miért van az, hogy némely mutualista rendszerbe stabilan integrálódnak a csalók, míg másokat a paraziták hatékonyan szétverik? Miért oly ritka a költséges szignál a mutualista rendszerekben? Lehet-e a mutualizmusnak fontos szerepe a fajképződésben?

Én a térbeli játékok kifejlesztését vállaltam ebben a tervezetben. Tervezzük, hogy vizsgáljuk a korlátozott terjedés és a térbeli struktúrák szerepét a mutualista kapcsolatok fenntartásában. Kíváncsiak vagyunk a partner válsztás és partner megbízhatóság kölcsönhatására. Alapvetően sejtautomata modelleket fogunk kifejleszteni.
Summary
Our aims to test and extend theory for two mechanisms that can produce cooperative associations between different species.
(1) We will apply economic contract theory to a variety of well-characterised mutualisms.
(2) We will test empirically and extend spatial game theory in two radically different symbioses, those between ants and plants and those between plasmids and bacteria.
Our work will reveal general mechanisms promoting cooperation (and the forces breaking it down) in systems with bounded rationality, providing answers to the following kinds of questions. Are there only few, robust mechanisms that promote cooperation between species? Conversely, why are some mutualistic systems overrun with parasites or cheating? Are some type of mutualisms not feasible? Does cooperation evolve more readily under particular environmental conditions, and is ongoing habitat change eliminating those conditions? Why are there seemingly so few examples of cost-enforced signal honestly in mutualism, in contrast to sexual selection in mating systems? Has selection for cooperation promoted specific diversification? What biological features confer power upon one partner over another, and can symbionts evolve to increase their power?

My proposal focuses on the spatial games describing different mutualistic systems. We plant to study the effect of limited dispersal and spatial structure on the evolutionary stability of mutualistic systems with the help of a series of cellular automata models. We are interested in the interaction of partner choice and partner fidelity mechanisms as well.

A fogolydilemma és a hótorlasz játékok viselkedését vizsgáltuk rácson. Megmutattuk, hogy a térbeliség mindkét szociális dilemma esetén segíti a kooperátorokat. Vizsgáltuk továbbá a kooperatív stratégia fixációs valószínűségét dinamikus gráfokon. Kimutattuk, hogy a gráf élek nem-szelektív átrendezése a kooperatív stratégia elterjedését jelentősen csökkenti, míg a szelektív átrendezése növelheti azt. Vizsgáltuk a sztochasztikus normák kialakulásának lehetőségét.

We studied the prisoner's dilemma and snowdrift games on rectangular grids. We showed that spatial correlations help cooperators in both models. We studied the fixation probability of cooperative strategy on simple dynamical graphs by using prisoner's dilemma game. It is shown that non-selective re-linking of the edges decreases the fixation probability of the cooperative strategy while selective re-linking can increase it. We studied the possibilities of the evolution of cooperative norms. It is shown that a specific cooperative norm becomes dominant in populations having group structure which is observed in the ancient human societies. This norm evolves even if individuals are informed only by indirect observers about the altruistic acts. We worked out a spatially explicit model to study evolutionary dynamics of Cordia nodosa, Allomerus and Azteca plant-ant system, where Allomerus defenses the plant but castrates the flowers of it. We studied the evolution of castration level and dispersion level by assuming adequate trade-offs. It is shown that a spatial cyclic dynamics maintain the coexistence of the three species. In concordance with the results of field experiments, the higher the plant density the smaller the castration level and the higher the relative density of castrating ant in the equilibrium. We studied non-linear N-person social dilemma games. It is shown that coexistence of cooperators and defectors is typical in these games in well-mixed populations.
