Summary in Hungarian
A projekt fő célkitűzéseként a szilárd Föld árapályának a kőzetek radon kibocsátásával, az atmoszférikus árapállyal, valamint a földrengésekkel való kapcsolatát vizsgáljuk. Tovább folytatjuk a Pannon medence tektonikai mozgásainak extenzométerekkel való megfigyelését, a környezeti hatások vizsgálatát, ill. e hatások kiküszöbölésére szolgáló matematikai módszerek fejlesztését.
A projekt során különös hangsúlyt fektetünk a mérési pontosság növelését szolgáló műszerfejlesztésekre is.
A kutatás eredményei új tudományos ismeretekkel járulhatnak hozzá az egyes geodinamikai jelenségek közötti kapcsolatok feltárásához. Az új ismereteket mind a földtudományokban, mind, pedig a környezetvédelemben – különösen veszélyes ipari létesítmények földtani kockázatának becslésére – lehetne hasznosítani.
Summary
The main objective of the project is the investigation of solid Earth tides’ relation with radon emanation of the rocks, atmospheric tides and earthquakes. We continue the observation of tectonic movements in the Pannonian Basin by means of extensometers, the investigation of environmental effects and the development of mathematical methods for elimination of disturbing effects. The continuation of tectonic movement investigation is important due to the fact, that ,among others, we possess continuous extensometric data series of 17 years till this time – which is unique according to our knowledge – and which could be increased by the amount of 4 years data. It could make possible a more precise movement rate determination than before.
New results can be expected especially from the investigation of the relationship between atmospheric tides and radon emanation. It was observed in several cases that e.g. in ground water monitoring wells the radon emanation was increased before earthquakes. The high radon concentration in the Geodynamical Observatory of Sopronbánfalva gives us the possibility to study the connections between the radon concentration, the rock stresses measured by the extensometers and the atmospheric pressure changes.
During our project special emphasis is laid on instrument developments serving the improvement of measurement accuracy.
Results of the research works can contribute new scientific knowledge to the revealing of the relation between certain geodynamical phenomena. The new knowledge could be exploited both in earth sciences and environmental protection – especially in geological risk assessment of endangered industrial objects.

Final report

Results in English
In the framework of the project simultaneous strain, air pressure, temperature and radon concentration measurements were carried out in the Sopronbánfalva Geodynamic Observatory (SGO). The calibration method of the extensometer was improved and its accuracy was increased by a factor of five. The Earth-observatory-instrument system was tested by coherence analysis and it was pointed out that the observatory is suitable for recording the local tectonic deformations. The relationship between air pressure and strain measured by the quartz-tube extensometer was investigated in detail. A new method based on neural network was developed for correction of strain data by air pressure. Numerical connection was found between the long-term strain and radon concentration variations. Radon concentration data were subjected to spectrum and tidal analysis. Tidal components were not unambiguously detected in the radon concentration data series. The extensometric measurements showed a compressional stress with a changing stress rate in the last 20 years in the SGO. The results of the extensometric measurements were compared with the results of geodetic (GPS) and geophysical strain measurements in the Pannonian Basin. The changing strain rate measured by the extensometer is probably due to the difference of the rising rate of the Eastern Alps and the Pannonian Basin and the folding mechanism in the basin. Further investigations are necessary in the future to confirm this assumption.
