Summary in Hungarian
Autokatalitikus lépést tartalmazó reakciók térbeli lejátszatása érdekes koncentrációeloszlásokat (mintázatokat) eredményezhet a termodinamikai egyensúlytól távol, a kinetika és a különböző transzportfolyamatok kölcsönhatása révén.

Csoportunk a homogén oldatokban kialakuló konvektív instabilitás kísérleti jellemzésében kiemelkedő szereppel bír; eredményeinkre a folyamatot elméletileg kutatók is biztonsággal alapoznak. Pontosságunkat a továbbiakban is előtérben tartva jelen pályázat célja autokatalitikus reakciókban a hidrodinamika mintázatvezérlő szerepének kísérleti jellemzése egyrészt homogén oldatokban kialakuló két- és háromdimenziós mintázatokban, másrészt előre beállított porózus közegekben. Pályázatunk további célja vizes közegekben jelenlévő NMR-aktív maggal rendelkező molekulák és ionok diffúzióállandójának kísérleti meghatározása impulzus gradiens NMR spektroszkópiával.
Summary
Reactions containing autocatalytic steps may give rise to interesting concentration distribution (spatiotemporal patterns) via the interaction of the kinetics and the transport processes when experiments are carried out far from equilibria. In nature, like the ocean circulation, atmospheric pollution, the movement of water soluble soil contamination, or bioconvection, the major driving force is convection. Diffusion has a significant role in the spatiotemporal selforganization of autocatalytic reactions, therefore the most accurate values of the diffusion coefficients is of great importance.

Our group has earned an international reputation in the experimental study of convective instability; our results may significantly contribute to theoretical advances in the field as well. The aim of this proposal is the experimental characterization of the pattern forming force of hydrodynamics in two- and three-dimensional patterns evolving in homogeneous solutions and in appropriately designed artificial porous media. Our further goal is the experimental determination of diffusion coefficients of molecules and ions in aqueous solutions and hydrogels by pulse-field gradient spin echo NMR spectroscopy.

A vastagságot továbbnövelve a hőfejlődéssel a mintázat stabilizálható. A jodát-arzénessav rendszerben a jód felületaktív anyag, mely révén a felületi feszültség változás miatt kialakuló Marangoni instabilitást feltérképeztük. PFGSE-NMR mérésekkel meghatároztuk egyes részecskék diffúzióállandóját, melyet vezetőképesség mérésekkel kiegészítve megadtuk adott közegben a hidrogénion diffúziós együtthatóját.

Fronts arising in the spatial system of autocatalytic reactions are affected by convection induced by density change resulting from the change in composition or temperature. In this work we have systematically mapped out the behavior and quantitatively described the 2- and 3-dimensional patterns propagating horizontally in the iodate-arsenous acid, the chlorite-tetrathionate reactions, and reactions accompanied by precipitate formation. We have shown that the mixing length characterizing the fronts depends on the liquid height and there exists a universal exponent under isothermal conditions. If the heat dissipation of the reaction becomes comparable to the heat loss through the wall, a constantly changing pattern develops. Upon increasing the the liquid thickness, the evolved heat stabilizes the pattern. In the iodate-arsenous acid system, where iodine is surface active, we have investigated the Marangoni instability arising due to the change in surface tension. In porous media, we have shown that for voids around a closely packed monolayer a scaling law similar to that for homogeneous media exists. In precipitation reactions, we have shown that the formation and the structure of the thermodynamically unstable crystal forms can be controlled. We have determined the diffusion coefficients of indicator species by PFGSE-NMR measurements, which - together with conductance measurements - allow the determination of the diffusion coefficient of hydrogen ion in hydrogels.
