Summary in Hungarian
Egyetlen energetikus villámkisülés is képes a Föld-ionoszféra üregrezonátor gerjesztésére. Az impulzusszerű változás, más néven Schumann-rezonancia (SR) tranziens koherens jelként jelenik meg a vertikális elektromos és horizontális mágneses térkomponensben, szuperponálódva a háttér elektromágneses sugárzásra, amelyet a világ zivatatevékenysége táplál. A háttér vagy folyamatos SR alkalmas a globális villámaktivitás monitorozására. Az SR tranziens lehetővé teszi a gerjesztő villám („parent stroke”) helyének, polaritásának, árammomentumának valamint töltésmomentum változásának a meghatározását. A gerjesztő villámokhoz esetenként felsőlégköri elektro-optikai emissziók (TLE - Transient Luminous Event) társulnak. E pályázat fő célja, hogy hozzájáruljon azon feltételek meghatározásához, amelyek megléte szükséges ahhoz, hogy a zivatarok, a villámkisülések felsőlégköri elektro-optikai emissziókat produkáljanak. A vizsgálatok elsősorban a nagycenki (NCK) Széchenyi István Geofizikai Obszervatórium SR mérésein, valamint a TLE-k megfigyelésén Közép-Európa felett saját kamerával európai TLE-kampányok keretében. Ez egyúttal az SR és optikai mérőrendszer tervezett korszerűsítésével együtt felkészülést jelent az Európai Űrügynökség ASIM (Atmosphere-Space Interactions Monitor) 2011-ben induló űrmissziójára, amelynek során a zivatarok felsőlégkörhöz, ionoszférához, magnetoszférához való elektrodinamikai csatolását egyidejűleg tanulmányozzák a Nemzetközi Űrállomásról és felszíni obszervatóriumokban.
Summary
Single energetic lightning discharge can excite the Earth–ionosphere cavity and the pulsed discrete variation: Schumann resonance (SR) transient appears as coherent signal in the vertical electric and horizontal magnetic field components superimposed on the background SR noise built up from the electromagnetic radiation of world lightning. Background or continuous SRs are suitable to monitor global lightning. From SR transient events one can estimate the location, polarity, current moment and charge moment changes of the parent strokes. The parent strokes are occasionally accompanied by TLEs (Transient Luminous Event) in the upper atmosphere. The main goal of this project is to contribute to determine the conditions for thunderstorms and lightning strokes to be TLE active based on first of all SR observations in the Széchenyi István Geophysical Observatory at Nagycenk (NCK), Hungary as well as optical recording of TLEs in central Europe with own camera in the frame of Euro-TLE campaigns and to improve the SR and optical recording sytem for the time of the ASIM (Atmosphere-Space Interactions Monitor) mission of ESA with expected launch in 2011. The electrodynamical coupling of thunderstorms processes to the upper atmosphere, ionosphere, magnetosphere will be studied simultaneously from the International Space Station and in surface observatories.

A FORMOSAT-2 műhold ISUAL egysége „sprite-halo” típusú TLE-ket is észlelt a 2004-2007 időszakban. Ezekhez tartozó nagycenki SR tranziensek alapján megállapítottuk, hogy a „sprite-halo”-k nagyobb részét negatív polaritású, impulzív villámok keltik és jellemzően tengerek, óceánok, illetve a partvidékek fölött fordulnak elő. A pozitív villám után megjelenő „lidérc-udvar” gyakoribb a szárazföldön. Elvégeztük a Sopronból Közép-Európában 2007 és 2009 között megfigyelt „sprite”- ok morfológiai osztályozását optikai tulajdonságaik alapján.

Global relationships were discovered between the variation of global lightning activity at the great atmospheric (meridional Hadley and zonal Walker) circulations on the ENSO time scale (2-5 years). Connection related to the 11-year solar cycle was found in the areal variation of global lightning activity. Analyzis of common SR-transients at Nagycenk and Mitzpe Ramon (Israel) excited by the same energetic lightning strokes show that the current momentum spectra differs from each other if one of the observers is in the day-side of the cavity while the other one is in the night side attributed to the distorting effect of the day-night asymmetry of the cavity. SR-transients excited by huge lightning discharges in Africa were identified at Nagycenk. They were also accompanied by transient luminous events firstly observed in Africa. Polarity and charge momentum changes were deduced from the SR-transients. ISUAL unit of the FORMOSAT-2 satellite captured numerous „sprite-halo” events in 2004-2007. SR-transients belonging to these events were identified at Nagycek. It was concluded that the larger part of the „sprite-halo” events relates to impulsive lightning strokes with negative polarity. These were mainly observed above the oceans and seas while the sprite-halo”-s with positive parent strokes rather occurred above the lands. Sprites observed from Sopron above Central Europe in 2007-2009 were classified on the base of their optically perceptible characteristics.
