Summary in Hungarian
A pályázat számítógépes szimulációkkal, matematikai modellezéssel és adatelemzéssel vizsgálja az élet korai evolúciójának fontos állomásait és a különböző evolúciós mechanizmusok mai élőlények genomjában fellelhető lenyomatát. Megvizsgálunk egy lehetséges megoldást az RNS-molekulák korai, nem enzimatikus replikációjának problémájára; szimuláljuk a protosejtek anyagcseréjének evolúcióját és felmérjük a rendszerben elérhető komplexitás korlátait; az evolúciós múltra utaló mintázatokat keresünk a genetikai kódban; nagy számú vírus és baktérium kodonhasználatának összehasonlító vizsgálatával kutatjuk a nukleotidszekvenciára ható evolúciós folyamatokat (szelekció és mutációs nyomás); a humán immundeficiencia vírus (HIV) példáján új módszert fejlesztünk ki az evolúció alaprátájának meghatározására nagy mennyiségű szekvenciaadat alapján, és az eredmények alapján a HIV szervezeten belüli evolúciós dinamikájába is bepillantást nyerünk.

A kutatási terv nagy múltú elméleti- és evolúcióbiológiai csoport profiljába illeszkedik. A pályázat a csoporthoz kötődő tehetséges fiatal kutatók alkalmazásával kulcsfontosságú szerepet játszhatna az agyelszívás visszafordításában, a felhalmozott kutatási tapasztalat és potenciál megőrzésében, és így e kiemelkedően sikeres kutatási irány továbbélésében.
Summary
The proposal addresses important problems in the early evolution of life and seeks to detect fingerprints of evolutionary forces in extant organisms by computer simulations, mathematical modelling and data analysis. We will test a possible solution to a problem of the early non-enzymatic replication of RNA molecules; simulate the evolution of metabolism in protocells and assess limitations on its complexity; study patterns and evolution of the genetic code; analyze patterns of codon usage across a large number of extant viral and bacterial taxa to understand evolutionary forces (selection and mutation pressure) that act on the nucleotide sequence; develop a method to determine the basal rate of evolution from large-scale sequence data on the example of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and gain insight into the within-host evolutionary dynamics of HIV infection.

The proposed research follows the focus theme of an established group of theoretical and evolutionary biology. The grant would be instrumental in reversing brain-drain, allowing talented young scientists to stay with the group, and in securing the survival of the accumulated research potential, maintaining this highly successful line of research.

Final report

Results in English
Our research centred on the origin and early evolution of life, with the tools of simulation and mathematical modelling. We studied the potential and limitations of surface metabolism (preceding cellular organisation) and of the evolution of prebiotic systems (preceding RNA genes). We investigated further aspects of the abstract dynamics of the simplest cellular living organisms (chemoton model), and analyzed the difficulties associated with the copying of RNA replicators. We gleaned new insight into the possible evolutionary history and mechanisms of the genetic code (translation) and of complex metabolism. In further projects, we studied the general theory of replicators, the evolution of cooperation, language and virulence, and the evolutionary/selective processes that occur in the brain.
