Summary
It has become clear that increased volatility of market conditions disfavours the former rigid,
hierarchical architectures in production, i.e., manufacturing systems should be organized as loosely
coupled networks of communicating and cooperating components or agents, where coordination,
collaborative work, cooperation and adaptivity should play important roles.
The theory of Complex Adaptive Systems (CAS) is a new paradigm with the goal to study the
structures and dynamics of systems. In general, it centers around the question how adaptivity of
systems creates, and at the same time, resolves complexity.
In a CAS-based approach for designing, analysing and running complex production structures, nonlinear
phenomena, uncertain and, additionally, often incomplete data and knowledge, a combinatorial
explosion of states, dynamic changes in the environment and the frame problem are some notable
examples of difficulties to be faced. The central question is realising an open system consisting of
autonomous agents that achieves its purpose in unpredictable conditions. For managing such systems
an appropriate balance between control and emergence must be found. The difficulty in understanding
the effects of individual characteristics of the agents on their collective behaviour underlines the
importance of using simulation. In this respect, the proper balance between simulation and theory is to
be aimed at.
The final goal is to make important steps towards the theoretical foundation of modelling, planning,
control and management of dynamic, flexible production structures. Levels from shop floors through
enterprises to the production networks are to be considered, and a synergy between the aspects of
optimization, autonomy, and cooperation is envisaged.

A kutatás során fontos lépéseket tettünk a dinamikus, rugalmas termelési struktúrák modellezésének, tervezésének, irányításának és menedzsmentjének elméleti megalapozása terén. Figyelembe vettük a termelési hierarchia különböző szintjeit, a műhelyektől a vállalatokon át a termelési hálózatokig, szinergiákra törekedve az optimálás, az autonómia és a kooperáció tekintetében. Az OTKA-támogatás feltüntetésével 47 publikáció született, melyek közül 17 folyóiratcikk (köztük 13 impaktos, 19,546-os összimpakttal), 1 könyvfejezet és 29 konferenciacikk. Megkezdődött az eredmények ipari bevezetése (GE, Hitachi, Audi, GAMESA, Bosch, Knorr Bremse, Bosch-Rexroth, stb.)) az MTA SZTAKI keretében működő Fraunhofer Termelésirányítás és –informatika Projektközpont (http://www.fraunhofer.hu) keretében.
Results in English
Significant steps were made towards the theoretical foundation of modelling, planning, control and management of dynamic, flexible production structures. Levels from shop floors through enterprises to the production networks were considered, and a synergy between the aspects of optimization, autonomy, and cooperation was aimed at. With indications to the OTKA support, as a whole, 47 papers have been published, i.e., 17 journal papers (among them 13 in journals with impact factors, with a cumulative impact factor of 19,546), 1 book chapter and 29 conference papers. The industrial deployment of the results was partly started in GE, Hitachi, Audi, GAMESA, Bosch, Knorr Bremse, Bosch-Rexroth, etc., mainly in the framework of the SZTAKI-Fraunhofer Production Management and –Informatics Project Center (http://www.fraunhofer.hu).
