II. A konvencionális cselekvések interpretálása, valamint a tudásátadásra való humán-specifikus képesség feltételezhetően megkívánja a mentális állapotok / mentális tartalmak bizonyos fokú megértését. E kérdés tisztázása érdekében megfigyeljük, hogy a látott eszközcselekvésből mely akciókat adja tovább a kulturális modell, megfigyeljük továbbá a különböző életkorokban alkalmazott tanítási stratégiákat, valamint felmérjük a gyermekek mentalizációs képességét.
Vizsgálatsorozatunk pontosítani kívánja a mentális állapotok megértése és a tanításra való humán-specifikus képesség kapcsolatát, valamint jelentős eredményekkel gazdagítaná a kulturális ismeretátadás korai megjelenésével kapcsolatos tudásunkat.
Summary
The aim of our research is to investigate the nature of human cultural knowledge transfer and inferential processes based on the theory of Human Pedagogy. The transfer of the conventional function and use of artifacts, learned from human adult model in ostensive-communicative and incidental observation condition, is tested with same-age diads (3,5 and 5 years of age) based on the following predictions:
I. The function and aim of several cultural conventions is opaque (for teleological reasoning) in the context of the physical world. The observed opaque information is A) attended to with the facilitation of pedagogical cues; or B) interpreted in terms of mental causation. In order to investigate these two competing hypotheses, we create situations where the conventional action precedes or follows the well defined goal.
II. The interpretation of conventional actions, and the human-specific capacity for knowledge-transfer very likely requires certain understanding of mental states and contents. To clarify this issue, we observe the cultural model in respect of a) transferred actions, b) teaching strategies, c) theory of mind capacities.
The primary importance of this project is the clarification of the connection between the human-specific capacity for teaching and theory of mind, and also to broaden our understanding of the early evidences of cultural knowledge transfer.

A kutatás során arra kerestük a választ, hogy a humán kulturális evolúciót milyen társas- és értelmi képességek teszik lehetővé. Kortárs tanulási láncok vizsgálatával kimutattuk, hogy az eredeti feltevéssel ellentétben a gyerekek inkább a saját interpretatív mechanizmusaikra támaszkodva értelmezik a látott eszközcselekvést és nem utánzásra érdemes kulturális tudásként. A relevancia utánzásban betöltött szerepét 1- és 2 éveseken vizsgálva úgy találtuk, hogy viselkedésüket a demonstrátor pedagógiai szándéka, a kommunikáció releváns elemeinek kiemelése vezérli, valamint késleltetett utánzási helyzetben hajlamosak az eredetileg elsajátított viselkedést bemutatni még akkor is, ha a korában releváns elsajátított elem időközben irrelevánssá válik. Mindez a racionális utánzás modelljének újrafogalmazását teszi szükségessé.

In order to reveal the mechanisms of social transmission of knowledge, preschoolers were observed in transmission chain experiments. In contrast to our expectations the observed object manipulations were not interpreted by the ‘tutee’ as culturally relevant knowledge; children rather relied on their own cognitive interpretive mechanisms. Studying the role of contextual relevance in imitation we found that 14-month-olds’ behavior is governed by the cues that signal the model’s intent to teach and these serve to guide infants’ relevance-reading process. Moreover it seems that 2-year-olds selectively imitate the necessary components of observed tool use, but then stick to their original strategy irrespectively of the change in the contextual cues. These findings point to formerly unknown aspects of the rational imitation account. We have also found that infants can use the perspectives and beliefs of others to interpret their actions but they do not encode the difference between others’ and own perspective. Such limitation may serve an important function, allowing infants to acquire information through the perspectives of others in the form of non-differentiated, universal access to general information. In order to study the evolutionary roots of social transmission of knowledge in humans, we have also tested the predictions of the natural pedagogy account in comparative studies of dogs and human infants. Our findings reveal infant-analogue social competence in dogs.
