Summary
In this project new geochemical (by AAS, ICP-AES) and mineralogical (by XRD, AEM) data will be supplied on settled dust samples from some Hungarian cities with considerably different population, industrial and traffic characters. Dusts have been widely associated with health disorders as presented by numerous studies. The qualitative and quantitative determination of heavy metals (such as Fe, Mn, Pb, Zn, Cu, Ni, Cr, Cd, and V) in the different particle size fractions of dusts, as well as the identification of their host phases in the <10 micron fraction will be performed. Measurements of these elements related to dust mineralogy not only lead to better deposition estimates but could also be used to provide information for the identification of the origin of pollutants. Chemical characterization of dusts can provide information on specific events of air pollution, atmospheric transport, transformation and deposition processes. Finally, a database containing the magnetic, mineralogical, and geochemical characteristics, particle size distributions, sampling site data and collection dates will be compiled. Relationships between all these data will be explored using the established database.

Final report

A PM10 mintákban napi változékonyság is megfigyelhető.

Airborne particulate matter may contain anthropogenic magnetic particles from industrial sources, vehicles and combustion. The most sensitive and cost-effective method for their monitoring is magnetic susceptibility measurement, which we carried out on 3400 samples provided by environmental inspectorates, collected at a high building, and emitted by anthropogenic sources. Mineralogical and geochemical analyses were made on representative samples. We identified magnetite as the dominant magnetic phase and concluded that its particle size may indicate the source but its morphology and chemistry do not. Heavy metals were associated partly to magnetite, partly to clay minerals and carbonates, or even to water soluble phases. We found that the rate of magnetic pollution is best reflected by the weight-independent total susceptibility (TS). TS shows a general seasonal trend: in the settled dust its maximum is in spring, due to re-suspension and re-settling of dust formed in winter, while in PM10 in autumn and winter. PM10 exhibits also daily variation. In urban environment, the major source of magnetite is traffic, even in highly industrialized places. During heating season, however, large amounts of non-magnetic pollutants are produced by heating. Thus, restriction of traffic may not be an effective tool in case of smog alert. Vertical distribution of settled dust and its magnetite content seems to be strongly influenced by the morphology of built and natural environment.
