Ezenkívül megvizsgáljuk a homogén approximáció közelítési rendjét is, hiszen ezáltal eredményeket nyerünk a konvex felületek homogén algebrai szintfelületekkel való közelítési rendjére is.

A felmerülő problémák széles spektrumúak: polinomokra vonatkozó egyenlőtlenségek, Jackson típusú approximációs tételek vethetők fel, továbbá klasszikus lineáris operátorok általánosíthatók a súlyozott esetre. Célunk az ezeken a területeken elért részeredmények általánosítása, különös tekintettel a véges intervallum belső pontjaban a két oldalrol különbző sebességgel nullához tartó súlyokra.
angol összefoglaló
It is well known that multivariate polynomials are dense in the space of continuous functions on compact subsets of the d-dimensional space. An important family of multivariate polynomials is the space of all homogeneous polynomials. These polynomials appear in problems related to approximation by neural networks, ridge functions, approximation of curves and surfaces by algebraic surfaces, etc. Thus it is natural to ask if the density holds for homogeneous polynomials. It has been conjectured that any function continuous on a convex surface can be approximated by sums of two homogeneous polynomials. This conjecture has been answered positively in the following cases: when d = 2; for any convex polytope; for any convex body with a sufficiently smooth boundary. In the present project we shall extend the study of density of homogeneous polynomials to wider families of convex bodies. We shall study the rate of approximation of continuous functions on convex surfaces; this will lead to estimates for approximation of convex surfaces by homogeneous algebraic level surfaces. The rate of approximation is related to Markov-type bounds for the derivatives of polynomials, and estimating the norm of gradients of polynomials. Recently, these inequalities were extended to the multivariate case, but mostly for uniform norm. In the framework of this project we plan to extend the study of multivariate Markov-type inequalities to the case of Lp-norms.
Introduction of weights into approximation problems allows consideration of infinite domains and locally continuous functions on finite domains. In most cases Jacobi and Freud-type weights are considered here.
We intend to extend the previous results for asymmetric weights and weights tending to zero at a given point
of the domain with different rate from different directions.

kutatási eredmények (magyarul)
1. Markov-Bernstein tipusú egyenlőtlenségek. A Markov-Bernstein tipusú egyenlőtlenségek a polinomok deriváltjainak becsléséről szólnak. Folytattuk a Weierstrass tipusu tételek vizsgálatát homogén polinomok esetén. Fontos új eredményt értünk el ezen a téren: bebizonyitottuk hogy a reguláris konvex testek határán folytonos függvények közelithetőek 2 homogén polinom összegével. Ezen kivül új univerzális becslést kaptunk a konvex testek konvex algebrai szintfelületekkel való közelités nagyságrendjére. 4. 5. Találtunk olyan új lineáris operátorokat, melyek a Freud sulyok segitségével közelitenek az egész számegyenes az eqvidisztans pontokon interpoláló egész függvényekkel. A Bernstein operátorokat kiterjesztettük bizonyos lokálisan folytonos függvények osztályára.

1. Markov-Bernstein type inequalities. Markov-Bernstein type inequalities are related to estimating the norm of the derivative of the polynomials. We extended the study of multivariate Markov-Bernstein type inequalities from the uniform to the Lp norm and obtained new results for convex and star like domains. 2. Stability of the metric projection operator relative to the small perturbations of the subspaces was studied. Optimal order 1 stability was established in case of the uniform norm and Lp norm when p is greater than 2. 3. We continued the study of Weiertsrass type theorems for approximation by homogeneous polynomials. A substantial new development was achieved by showing that sums of pairs of homogeneous polynomials are dense in the space of continuous functions on boundaries of regular central symmetric convex bodies. In addition we obtained new universal upper bounds for the rate of approximation of convex bodies by convex algebraic level surfaces. 4. We studied the cardinality of optimal meshes (or norming sets) for multivariate polynomials and verified existence of optimal meshes for polynomial graph domains, convex polytopes and star like domains with C2 boundary. 5. We constructed new linear operators which approximate functions on the whole real line by entire functions interpolating at equidistant nodes using Freud type weights. Bernstein operators were extended for a certain class of locally continuous functions.
