The aim of the project is to develop new population balance models and computer solutions for describing the properties and behaviour of interactive fluid-solid systems, involving solid particles having size of orders of magnitudes 10-8 [m]-10-2 [m]. In the framework of this approach, solution crystallization and suspension polymerisation are studied by means of computer and physical experimentation, investigating the effects of macro- and micromixing, as well as the collisional mass and heat transfers between the solid particles, fluid elements and continuous surfaces (wall, phase boundary) on formation of particles, and by this way on the size, shape, size distribution, structure and temperature of particles. Particulate systems are prevalent and of enormous economic importance in the processing industries, and the methods to be developed allow designing suitable operation modes for model-based tailoring of crystals and polymer particles, as well as their agglomerates.
The scientific aims of the project make a contribution to develop a computer aided modelling basis for process engineering purposes. This research work is intended to be a further step towards the concept of Model-Driven Process Engineering that refers to the systematic use of models as primary engineering artefacts throughout the engineering lifecycle. Beside the new scientific results, the research and its results provide a framework in training stu-dents of modern process and chemical engineering.

kutatási eredmények (magyarul)
A fluidum-szilárd diszperz rendszerek matematikai leírására több-dimenziós populáció mérleg-egyenletet dolgoztunk ki, amely a diszperz elemek által hordozott extenzív mennyiségek viselkedését is leírja. Tartalmazza a diszperz elemek közötti közvetlen interakciókkal indukált átadásokat és a diszperz elemekben végbemenő folyamatokat is. A teljes modellt három csatolt, mikro-, mezo- és makro-léptéken reprezentáltuk. Kidolgoztuk a diszperz elemek közötti komponens- és hőátadás konstitutív összefüggéseit. A többdimenziós populáció mérleg-egyenletek megoldására egy hibrid folytonos idő-Monte Carlo megoldási módszert dolgoz-tunk ki. A populáció mérleg-egyenlet alkalmazásával a homogén reaktorok mikro-keveredésének leírására dolgoztuk ki a gCR (generalised coalescence/redispersion) modellt. A hűtéses, reakció és kisózásos kristályosítás modellezésével vizsgáltuk a kristályok morfológiai változásait, a tűszerű kristályok viselkedését és törését, és a gCR modell alkalmazásával az oldat mikrokevertségének hatását a kristályos termék tulajdonságaira. Kimutattuk, hogy a gáz-szilárd rendszerekben a szemcsék közötti közvetlen hőátadás jelentős hatással van a rendszerek termikus tulajdonságaira. A vinil-klorid szuszpenziós polimerizációjának leírására kidolgozott részletes modellel meghatároztuk a monomer-polimer cseppek viselkedésének (koaleszcencia, törés, ütközéses komponens- és hőátadás) folyamatra gyakorolt hatásait, valamint a termikusan biztonságos üzemelés feltételeit.
kutatási eredmények (angolul)
We developed a multi-dimensional population balance equation for interactive fluid-solid disperse systems governing also the behaviour of extensive quantities carried by the disperse elements. It includes terms describing collisions induced exchanges of extensive quantities between the disperse elements with the processes occurring within those. The full model is represented at three, coupled, micro-, meso- and macro-scales. Constitutive equations of exchange of species and heat were elaborated. A hybrid continuous time-Monte Carlo method was developed for solution of multi-dimensional population balance equations. Applying the population balance equation, we developed the gCR (generalised coalescence/ redispersion) model for describing micromixing in homogeneous chemical reactors. By modelling cooling, reaction and anti solvent crystallization, the morphological changes of crystals, behaviour and breakage of needle-shape crystals, and, by using the gCR model, the effects of micromixing on the properties of crystalline products were studied. We proved that the collisions induced exchange of heat between the particles affects significantly the thermal behaviour of gas-solid systems. Using the mathematical model developed for suspension polymerization of vinyl chloride, we demonstrated the effects of monomer-polymer droplets (coalescence, breakage, exchange of species and heat) on the polymerisation process, and the thermally safe conditions of operation.
