magyar összefoglaló
A tervezett project keretében három különböző forrású regionális klímamodell szimulációt (PRUDENCE, PRECIS, RegCM) használunk fel a Kárpát-medence regionális extreme klímaszcenárióinak előállítására.
In the frame of the proposed project simulations of three different regional climate model sources (i.e., outputs of PRUDENCE, PRECIS, and RegCM) are used to generate extreme regional climate scenarios for the Carpathian basin. Daily (and in case of PRECIS and RegCM, 6-hourly) simulated gridded datasets are available for the 2071-2100 period (using 50 km, 25 km, and 10 km horizontal resolution, respectively), which enables us to make extreme event analysis for A2 and B2 scenario (in case of PRUDECE and PRECIS), and A1B scenario (in case of RegCM). The proposed research plan includes the following analyses: (i) evaluating the expected change of the empirical distribution functions with modeling the distribution tails using the peaks-over-threshold method; (ii) analyzing the time varying thresholds in order to follow the seasonality of different climate characteristics; (iii) determining return periods for extreme events; (iv) analyzing spatial teleconnections between extremes; (v) estimating the expected change of extreme events and parameters in the subregions of the Carpathian basin; (vi) analyzing case studies of regional climate change impacts related to health and urban effects: estimation of the expected extreme temperature change effects on cardiovascular death cases, and analysis of the regional climate change consequences on urban heat island in case of Budapest and other large cities of Hungary and Central Europe (with more than 80,000 and 1,000,000 inhabitants, respectively).

kutatási eredmények (magyarul)
A globálisan klímaváltozás következtében fellépő regionális hatások mérséklése érdekében elengedhetetlen a megfelelő alkalmazkodási stratégiák kidolgozása. Ehhez fontos, hogy minél pontosabb becsléseket készítsünk a jövőben várható trendekre vonatkozóan. Kutatásunk során az extrém éghajlati viszonyok jövőben várható tendenciáit vizsgáltuk, elemeztük a Kárpát-medencére nemzetközi és hazai klímamodellezési eredmények felhasználásával. A modellbecslések alapján a hideg eseményekhez kapcsolódó extrémumok előfordulásának csökkenésére és a meleg extrémumok gyakoribbá válására számíthatunk a jövőben. A várható változás mértéke a 2021–2050 időszakra vonatkozóan megközelítőleg a fele az évszázad végére becsült változás értékének. Az országon belül a délebbi térségekben nagyobb változások valószínűsíthetők. A hegységekben, a magasabban fekvő területeken a meleg hőmérsékleti szélsőségeket jellemző éghajlat indexek sokkal kisebb mértékű növekedése várható, mint a sík vidékeken, a hideg extrémumokban várható változás viszont még az átlagosnál is nagyobb. A csapadékkal kapcsolatban eredményeink arra a következtetésre vezetnek, hogy hazánkban a XXI. század végére nyáron (továbbá kisebb mértékben ősszel és tavasszal) jellemzően szárazodásra számíthatunk, ugyanakkor a csapadékesemények valószínűsíthetően nagyobb intenzitásúak lesznek (főként ősszel). Télen szintén várhatóan intenzívebb lesz a csapadékhullás, de ebben az időszakban összességében is a csapadék növekedése prognosztizálható.
kutatási eredmények (angolul)
In order to reduce the regional impacts of global warming, it is essential to develop appropriate adaptation strategies. For this purpose, it is important to provide estimations of the future trends as precisely as possible. During this research project we analyzed the projected trends of extreme climatic conditions for the Carpathian Basin using international and national climate model outputs. According to the model predictions extreme cold and warm conditions are likely to occur less and more frequently, respectively. The projected changes by 2021-2050 are about half of the changes estimated by the end of the 21st century. Within Hungary, larger changes are projected in the southern regions. In higher elevated areas and mountains the projected increase of warm extremes are much smaller than in the lower elevated regions. However, the projected changes of cold extremes are larger than the spatial average. Our results concerning the precipitation-related extremes suggest that summers (and somewhat autumns and springs also) at the end of the 21st century will become drier in the Carpathian Basin. The intensities of precipitation events are very likely to increase at the same time (especially in autumn). In winter the precipitation intensity is projected to increase as well, as the precipitation amounts.
